I now have a Terraria server up and running! See banner above for ip. When you join, please start with a fresh character, so everyone starts even.
NOTE! Difficulty setting is clientside! So it's totally up to you how difficult you want to play the game. You can set the difficulty when you create your character.

I went right ahead and made a little bunker-y thing with the basic crafting stations in at spawn. Also has the start of a straight-down hole. Should we assume the standard no-thieving rules? I'm very used to filling my house with chests. On that note, does whitelist?

Was fighting the Eye of Cthulu with a not-very-good weapon, was taking quite a while. Then it got fuckin' smashed by a falling star. Ironically, I read about that very thing happening just this morning.
Incidentally, I haven't seen any evidence that anyone else has even joined, let alone played. Where be everybloody?

I made the mistake of playing GTA: San Andreas on the weekend, so I will probably not be available for any other games for the next six months. Shit's addictive, yo. I'll try getting on the server on the weekend, although I've only ever played about five minutes of Terraria so don't expect to see any giant castles.

I've noticed the first signs of non-Jessie lifeforms!
In other news, I beat up the Brain, and am starting to mine Hellstone. Will have to pop along to the dungeon at some point. I saw the jungle to the left, so it must be to the right. Found a pyramid in my travels, they seem pretty rare. Looted it for everything it was worth, which was basically a Sandstorm in a Bottle.

Well, ah, I've done about all I can before the Wall of Flesh. I'll hold off... for now.
EDIT: I lied, I hadn't really explored the jungle. I have now. Pretty much looked through every surface-exposed section of it looking for a hive or at least the temple, and didn't find squat. I'll keep looking.

About 3 seconds after I joined the server, a goblin army invaded. Slayed me an unspeakable number of times and some of the merchants before I even knew where I was. I borrowed some sort of fire sword from a picture frame (?) and fended it off somehow. Then I tried to explore, fell in a cave, and then an ant-headed earthworm that makes steam locomotive sounds followed me back home and slayed another merchant or two. Then I ragequit. Fuck this. You can have my items.

Dankeschön! May I request a new world? Seeing as I'm the only one who's done anything substantial, I think I have a little leeway here, right? It's just after putting it into Hardmode and all, it's a little alienating to newcomers, the likes of Stu there. Y'know, now that anyone else has started playing much.
Posted 9 years ago2014-11-30 15:01:48 UTCPost #322551
Difficulty settings are client side, when you create your character. Hardmode might be the default setting. I don't know if you can change it to softcore mode without creating a new character first though, if you can't, you need to create a new character.
Softcore mode lets you keep all your stuff, you only drop 50% of each type of coin in your inventory.

Well, those difficulty settings are client-side, yes, Softcore and Hardcore and that. But the world gets set to Hardmode after the Wall of Flesh gets defeated. It's just plain progression. Hence the request.
(I'm not really the only one who's played Terraria enough to know all this, right?)

Never played Hardcore, myself. That sort of thing ain't my bag. Maybe I'll spend a little bit writing up signs to go at spawn as a very basic starter's guide.

Just bought it, but not sure when I'll be on atm. It was easy w/ Minecraft, 'cause I could run it on Ubuntu (daily activity OS), when I had free time. However, to play Terraria, I've got to restart and boot into Windows, which I usually only do a for a couple hours at the end of the night for a few rounds of Battlefield.
Hopefully the Linux version will be viable/released soon.

That's cool. Now my tombstone isn't there.
After spending 2 hours in single player, trying to figure out the game, I hopped on the server to check it out. After walking over to a stray NPC to check things out (during the day) without event, I started back to spawn, only to be slain...by a Pixie. Those things are surprisingly strong.

THAT'S the sort of thing I was talking about
Thanks Atom, muchly appreciated.
I went right ahead and wrote up a bunch of starters-guide signs in a hall in the spawn shelter. Nothing the Guide NPC and/or the Wiki couldn't tell anyone, but who knows, it might help out someone.

I'll probably get on the server tonight. I don't have access to a desk so I've had to use a gamepad, so the clunky Joy2Key bindings I've made combined with my complete lack of experience with Terraria means that I'll probably have to spend a while playing offline first.

Well, Stu and I have reached the point where there's not much left to do but fight the last Normalmode boss and set off Hardmode. Seeing as other people have shown up more than once (which is more than ever happened the first time), not going to just do that obliviously, obviously.
I guess I'm just gauging whether or not other people actually intend to be playing on the server. If not, well, we may as well just keep going, but if you are out there, I'm sure we can wait for a while until y'all catch up.

I've joined twice, for a few minutes each. Nobody was on either time.
Maybe it's because I've never really played Terraria before, or because I've only played for such a short time, but I can't really see much to actually do. I'll certainly be on more, but for now I'll say don't let me hold you back.

One of my IRL buddies had the same sort of complaint about it. It is (at least, at the start) a lot like Minecraft, which strikes me as ironic, as that's always seemed to ultimately have far less to do than Terraria. (And without a wiki or other people, how the hell are you supposed to know how to make stuff in Minecraft?) I don't know. It's one of those things that is enjoyable if you're willing to give it a chance to be. Hence why it's not as popular. /wry

I don't know, Terraria is something I can't quite understand. It entertains me, but I find it boring. Yet I still find myself playing it for hours before it bores me enough to leave.

Like I said in the Minecraft thread, it's not the game, it's the time of the year. If only there was a way to compare player concurrence against time of the year...
