I've found and grew a huge interest on this engine. It's an old-school one that is inspired by System Shock 1. You just have to look up what it has and I want to have a Revert3D buddy that I can learn from.

What is your thoughts about the engine? It can run on any Windows computer so it doesn't do any harm to any current computer. Test it out.

It'd be better if you just focus on one engine and one project at a time until you finish it. It's good to have many ideas, but working only on one will get you results faster than developing several things at the same time.

Not entirely true. Sometimes it’s healthy for the project and person to step back and clear your head of it for a while with something else. It’s not always about faster results, but better results.

Yeah, but this guy does it all the time. He starts one thing and immediately shifts to another.

Looks a little bit too retro for me this one. I like the build and original Doom engines but that's probably as far back as I would go.

Retro is a style. I want to try a thing or two with it and see what happens.

Do that! Definitely! It might be the only engine that I should work with for now too. It's soundless, but I can counter that with visual indication and player imagination.

Revert3D needs to be used. It is a straight shame if it would just vanish like any other fanmade engine.

nothing "needs" to be used. It's old and outdated, seems to no longer be developed for, hugely lacking in features (even in comparison to goldsrc). There's a reason things vanish, and that's because they become obsolete - just like this engine. I know you want to make projects using it, but you can't force people to want to use something they have no interest in

Aw very true. The more I look at it, the more I want to retrotize goldsource and just use that because I know it’ll be good.

Still haven’t tried Revert yet though. Might be soon.

It appealed to me because it seems quick and easy to use, as well as being lightweight and self-contained.

I kinda tried. It's really clunky. It would take more effort than I currently have to give to make something impressive.

I see the potential as a self-contained game kit in of this type, but it has a looooooong way to go to be anything substantial. It also appeals to a niche group that is possibly dying out. I honestly though I'd be able to get into it, but I didn't even like games in that style when I was younger. My first FPS was Halflife anyway, and I've never played Wolfenstein, Doom, Duke Nuken 3D, or any of those.

I could literally write a thesis on what the developer could or should do with this engine, but what would be the point? Nothing has been updated in like 5-6 years or more, not even sure. Also, working with it makes me want to fire up Halflife and map something, but I JUST got back from an incredibly stressful California adventure and I do have to prioritize my projects for pretty much the rest of the year.

This has been a weird experience for me. I would certainly encourage anyone else to try it. It's not bad, but it's not good. It's simply a tricky canvas if you want a challenge.

@RimRook

Yeah it's quite limited and buggy but it still got enough potential that it actually needs to be finished. Revert3D or not, the idea of this is too great to be forgotten. (Thanks to the Marathon series I got into this kind of stuff)

Yeah I got a good number of crashes in.

I agree it needs to be finished. For some reason I can’t place objects. It’s like the O hot key just doesn’t work or something and I can’t find a workaround.

Also, adding new textures is stupid easy, but it’s weird that they are all so large. I thought they were going to be 64 squared but they were all 256 in the Saturn group and 128 in the Shocktex group. I tried a 64x64 texture and found it doesn’t look good with the texture filtering. That might just be my gfx card. However, playing the example ship map, I noticed nothing else was filtered, just the walls, floor, and ceiling. Everything else was pixelled and sharp which looks good.

The kit and engine could use a good phoenixing. Someone needs to adopt it, just don’t know who would.

I couldn't work with expanding it because I have too much to do on other projects. But if I where to find someone who could work on it then I would.

And what do you mean by O doesn't work? It worked to me.

I didn't even try scripting something, but I would guess somethings up with your computer if nothing worked.

I can say proudly that I know why it was so buggy. It simply worked better on old computers.

Makes sense because it's "Revert".

(It's necro-posting, but it's better than making a new thread)
(Besides I am the thread's creator)

I have a request. Can someone with an old computer OR an old OS test this engine and see if you would want to work on completing it? Or at-least learn how scripting in it works. Cause I would really want someone to learn me it.

Screamer, you've been given advice to just stick to one project an amount of times I couldn't count. (In this very thread it's been brought up.)

The community here is very patient and forgiving, but until you show that you can work even a very simple project to completion, nobody will bother to give advice that you will simply ignore and move onto something else. Whether you intend for it or not, it's incredibly disrespectful of others free time to give you advice time and time again just for you to decide it's no longer worth your effort.

Pick a very very small and simple project, one that you can absolutely finish.
And once you've finished it, make something slightly more complex that you would need a little bit of help with and complete it as well. And so on.

It's great you have ambition, really. But you're just setting yourself up for failure undertaking projects that are far beyond the scope of your capability right now.
We've all had years of experience so of course it looks easy for us to do our respective hobbies and skills.
Some learn faster than others, but I'm telling you we've all had to take things one step at a time to get where we are.

And we've all had to deal with the frustration of not feeling like we're not good enough to continue trying or that we overestimated our ability to do something. But once you've involved other people, it no longer becomes your choice to decide that it's not worth your time.
And forget mapping/modding/custom game engining or whatever for a moment, in life in general you're going to need to learn to respect and value other people's time or life is going to be quite the uphill battle for you when it doesn't need to be.

You also need to learn to not take criticism as a personal attack... I don't know if you're incredibly young or just naïve but for personal growth you need to take constructive criticism as somebody caring enough to take the time to tell you what you're doing wrong and what you could do to improve.
If you can't do that then you will be stuck exactly where you are, for however long it takes for you to realize how much time of yours, and everybody else's has been wasted.

I didn't mean to throw everyone's advices away. I just didn't know better. If they matter so much then I'll stick to some small projects. This Revert3D one isn't supposed to be so big cause the engine isn't even finished.

So I'll try that one out. However it's far away from my job (Which I am in right now) so It'll be when I get home.

And if Rack77 needs to be made. Then I'll make sure that it will be made one day.
