I like to design wide open area maps, but there is only one common problem among them which is that when you look around and at some angles the sky turns into black,

if you have solution please post it as soon as possible,

I think it can be the viewable distance. Press "Map" then "Map properties" then change the Max viewable distance to a higher limit. :D

It's a limitation of the engine. You can't make huge open maps in HL.

If you use Software graphics, that happens a lot.

i switched to direct3d and even i have a large open area but it just work fine, but direct3d is slower than software rendering

Use GL. D3D can cause some problems, and it doesn't let me alt-tab between programs when enabled. (Oh, no!)
