Hey there folks! I've been collecting Half-Life mods for years and I've (As expected) came across a bunch of mods that either don't have a working download link anymore or are not findable anywhere. I'm posting the full list here with all the info I could find for each missing mod. If you've got in hand one (Or more) of these mods, don't hesitate to let me know!

I actually still have Mrpo's corridor and dormitories maps, but not the wad they need to run. (I think this was a combination of textures from Blue-Shift and Opposing Force)

As for the others, Jessie is currently working her way through the entire map vault on stream, and noting those that are missing. Any older ones that have not been recovered by now are potentially lost forever.

Yeah, I'm afraid most of them are lost forever, unless somebody archived them (Which I highly doubt so, but never say never). I have gone thru the entire (Half-Life & Opposing Force) map vault last year and noted those that have a missing / broken download link as well, all of them are listed here. As for the Mrpo's maps (Or any other map/mod you have from the list) if you can upload them somewhere I'd greatly appreciate that. ☺

It is sad. :( How many talent gone forever...
Posted 4 years ago2020-06-25 20:55:17 UTC Post #344461
Note: Blackop Mission is still under development. Most likely what you owned was only a minor demo release.
I'm his beta tester and last I talked with him, idk like 6 months ago he said he was still working on it.

I still got Cleaner's Adventures Begin on my external HD. But guess what the Hard Drive is giving me a bad indexing error and has bad clusters as of today when I wanted to open my archives just for this topic here.. I hope I will be able to fix it considering I got plenty more archived things on it that would be lost for ever if I can't fix it. :(
Pretty sure I still got Panic at Black Mesa at that broken HD too.

Rest goes only as far as saying I might still have xyz burned on CD's.

Infinity
Xen Crystal
Secret Santa 2011 on broken HD
TWHL for the "Xen Trasportation"

While it's sad I don't think it's a huge loss here with few exceptions. Simply considering that most mentioned maps were merely created for various competitions which often just contained graphics but no actual game play.
I still got a CD with maps that aren't even known anymore to modern hl1 players as they vanished in the late 90s not long after Half-Life's actual release but even here stands to say that most maps were tiny like fighting against an Apache on a roof top with a mounted RPG and so on, so nothing special. I'd like to think that the community did an epic job in preserving up to 80% of the true Gems out there. 18% were junk and not worth saving and 2% like Gargantua Mod Chapter One were simply overlooked casualties.

I have 33 gigs of mods and maps stored on my HDD, collected from various sites from different years, and 23 gigs of regular "non-missing" mods as my personal collection intended for playing.

Funnily enough, none of the mods mention here are present on my collection, I will re-check to see again nevertheless. Some of them sound very familiar though "Dormitories" , "Water Drilling" , "Flat" etc. It is possible that I downloaded but deleted them after discovering their lack of quality. I also remember searching "Can Headcrabs Float?" a long time without success, looked well made.

I agree with 23-down, many of the lost projects were very low quality beginner maps and mods. Still, I would love to discover them for preservation purposes.

Hm sounds interesting.. Perhaps cap some screenshots of the files names in list format.
I myself am a collector. You might own some mods that I myself was looking for - for a long time, mods that are equally lost but not considered right now.
Posted 4 years ago2020-06-25 21:51:28 UTC Post #344464
Yeah, most of the mods listed in the first/second post are probably low-medium quality but I still would love to have/play them for archival purpose, even if they are really bad or bugged. Just to say, I've played all of the ~20 Mr. Kraps maps from lambda-force that are basically one big room with some random enemies and items across the map with some little changes here and there.

EDIT 1:

Also @23-down, if you are a collector as well, you might be interested in my massive list of mods I've documented and downloaded:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1V8Cjc40P9w1Jn-cbekbmzncLZgDiQbro

EDIT 2: Was quite interested to see what was the size of my main "mods" folder, turns out it's over +99 gigabytes

I think that a lot of talent is gone, not by the quality of their work but for them be pioneers in the HL modding community. ;)
Posted 4 years ago2020-06-25 23:05:09 UTC Post #344466
The problem is, I left the filenames exactly as the authors gave them, all of them are tested but most of them are unpacked. There are countless valve.rars and folders simply titled "hl". There is no way to know what they contain without playing them all over again.

It is a chore to comb through them but I'll do some digging anyway, check the liblist to see the names at least. Even though there are maps as old as from 1998, I don't remember playing anything from your list. It also doesn't help that most mods have or had, very generic names.

I wish a thread like this was created sooner, I cleaned up a huge chunk of my collection a couple of months ago, deleted every badly made project that I wouldn't play again.
Posted 4 years ago2020-06-26 00:19:00 UTC Post #344467
Damn, that's sad to hear. I made a similar list several months ago and posted it on the TWHL's Discord server but it wasn't 100% complete and it didn't have the bits of info that I included in this one. Luckily, all of the rare mods that I could find and recover are secured in a dedicated hard disk. I hope to see at least one or two mods from the list recovered as well

Really? I remember those maps! Mrpo was my old account! Do you mind if i have a download of those? I would really appreciate that.

I won't be keeping it on my drive forever, so grab it now and put it somewhere safe. Why not reupload it if they're your maps @Cabo. :D

Well... bajs (created by Lassse, twhl-vault-2104.zip, originally published on TWHL, download link is not working)
I think you can safely ignore that one, you're likely not missing out on anything. In mine and Lassse's language bajs means poop. When I was a stupid 13-year-old I had a TWHL account that got banned (with good reason) and I only commented on four map vault items. It so happens that one was on this map. My comment was simply "suck". I don't know if I meant that the map sucks or if I meant "sigh" ("suck" in Swedish).

I'm the original creator of "Gargantua Mod Chapter One". Sadly the source files for the mod have been lost in an old disk drive I think. Will try this weekend to find the stuff. it's been 15 years sadly.

Please do seguroquehayotro, I hope you find it, it is one of the few mods that is actually worth unearthing.
Posted 4 years ago2020-08-29 12:37:00 UTC Post #344668
Alot of these mods wouldn't work even if you found the download. The steam version of Half-Life was updated and old mods don't work anymore. Unless you've got a CD copy or an original 90's copy (non-steam) of the game then it might work. Sadly, alot of this talent has been lost. :( But there are plenty more mods on sights such as gamebanana, wunderboy, moddb. :D If I do find a working download, I will post about it. until then, farewell!

EDIT: Was this the video for half-shock? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6I2unHlxSw the website link at the desc seems to be not working. :\

This is simply not true, I have been playing mods for a long, long time and I never had any problems with the Steam version. Even some of the oldest mods, not to mention mappacks, work without problems on Steam version of HL. I have currently 182 mods on my collection, some are decades old and every single one of them work flawlessly.

Does anyone remember a mod called "Labcoats Required" ? Every now and then the name pops up in my head and I am sure I am not confusing the texture with the same text on it with that ( possibly nonexistent ) mod.

Can anyone confirm?

I may have Edge of Death Series 1 on my old PC's HDD that I've kept - I'll check soon.

Wasn't labcoats required renamed into Scientists Adventure later on and that mod never came beyond a minor demo release?
I could be confusing things but the name does indeed ring a bell for me.

@Jackn0
Half-Shock was an unfinished mod project with no opponents in it as memory recalls. I did play that back in the days.
As for mods not working just copy your cl_dll and dlls folder of your Valve folder into the mod folder and the mod should work as intended. In many mods I got I often notice that I can't switch weapons 'cause the dlls are missing. If the intended mods still don't won't it might be due to missing wad. files. Should you get this error ED_Alloc: No free edicts. Then there's a command you can add in a shortcut for the main half-life.exe in the target line: -num_edicts 4095 -mod NameOfHLMod that fixes that error.

Yeah, I've played and completed a few thousands of Half-Life mods and even the very old ones were working (Some required to swap .dlls to work properly and some were crashing out of the blue, luckily I've personally fixed the ones I was able to fix but 95% of the mods do work fine with the Steam version of Half-Life).

Of course if you still do have these lost mods feel free to post them somewhere, even if the mod isn't brilliant or good, still worth collecting
Posted 4 years ago2020-09-13 14:37:23 UTC Post #344721
Exactly, I have never come across a mod that didn't work when tinkered with a little bit. I first started collecting mods and mappacks nearly 10 years ago when I noticed a mod called "Akimbo Half-Life" was no longer available. I'm sure you know - it gave you two pistols and slowmotion which was a cool gimmick but not nearly enough for me to put it to my mod collection, which was seperate from my archive.

When it was deleted by the cretor I felt the urge to preserve the addon, It felt weird that a mod / addon I once played was completely lost so I found it once again and started to archive anything and everything just like yourself until a couple of years ago, when I felt that 75% of the mods and maps were pretty low quality and neither was fun to play nor worth keeping around, pity this topic was created after I purged most of them.

I still check out mod sites daily to see new mods / mappacks / addons, I am confident that I played "nearly" every mod that was released to this day and kept the best ones within my personal collection. The most obscure ones either come from the creators' personal sites which was pretty common back in the day or from sites with foreign languages.

Some of the most obscure mods I still (possibly) have come from sites such as these, some of which are:
  • Lost in Black Mesa (the original version not the FX merge) - A typical BM escape type mappack
  • CSM Mapping Contest 2011 - High quality maps from various users
  • Down-Time - the mod is available on RTSL but it is different from a , in creators own words, harder version which was deleted, luckily I archived it.
  • Sewer - An abandoned project that is mostly puzzle solving
  • Various CS maps like cs_assault and de_dust remaked into singleplayer maps, gruntfests - the names escape me
  • One horror type of mod in which a retextured gonome tries to catch you in an old hotel, it has some cutscenes - the name also escape me
I have been going through my archive for some time now to see whether or not there are some lost or rare mods that could be archived on your list, I will let you know if I come across anything but I doubt it. It seems that even the creators themselves lost the files, our chances are pretty slim.

Will let everyone know.
Posted 4 years ago2020-10-30 02:24:49 UTC Post #344811
Some news, I've digged up a pretty obscure and unfinished mod called "Marathon: Rampancy". As the name implies, it is based on the Marathon series by Bungie.

The mod itself is playable but very problematic: Empty levels, weapons that lack sounds, maps that start the player under the brushes - requiring noclip to get free etc.
I could upload it if it's considered missing and is not on the archive.

Again, will let everyone know if I come across any more rare stuff.
Posted 4 years ago2020-11-22 17:12:09 UTC Post #344927
Nice, Marathon: Rampancy is definitely missing in my collection, plus I'm not sure if I do have CSM Mapping Contest 2011 (If you can tell me the name of the .bsp files that would be great to see if I do have them or not, or if you could upload the mod itself that would be even better!). If you wanna upload them somewhere that would be amazing. The other mods you've mentioned are preserved in my collection as well.

Thanks.

EDIT: Managed to find "Marathon: Rampancy" in an old YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIUIsJ_ER-E
Luckily the Mediafire download link is still working.

EDIT 2: Regarding the CSM Mapping Contest 2011, is it by any chance this contest here?
https://cs-mapping.com.ua/threads/single-mapping-contest.28357/
Posted 4 years ago2020-11-22 18:50:09 UTC Post #344931
Yes, that's the contest I was talking about.

I was ready to upload the Marathon when I saw the edit, that's the mod alright. It also made me wonder the possibility of more mods hiding in obscure parts of Youtube.

Back to digging.
Posted 4 years ago2020-11-22 19:52:55 UTC Post #344933
Yeah, I dug into YouTube as well to see if there are some obscure mods in there but I couldn't find much minus the 2-3 mods listed in my very first posts that have broken download links..

Also, one thing I'm wondering is that there's this addon here (https://www.moddb.com/mods/kiwi-run/downloads/door-red) that I would like to play and preserve but my antivirus spotted a virus in the archive. Thing is I'm not sure if it's really a virus or a false positive.. Hmm.. :\

Funny how some mods that were on this site, and only on this site once, is now considered "lost". The only hope of ever finding them is hoping that someone saved them in their drive for 10+ years.

All files should have been hosted internally from the start, in my opinion.
