when i try and open a map thru hammer it will give me this problem, and it will also give me this problem when i go thru HLSW ...

And i have another problem i don't really have a problem with it but it would be nice it says could not open bitmap file gfx/shell/splash.bmp ... my guess is that it is the background "skin" for half-life?

Help would be greatly apreciated....

Thanks,

PS: i'm also having trouble carve in the tutorial "inthebegining" it has me make a hall way, but i can't figure it out,
thanks again

I can help you with the carve: Make a block with the size of the hole you will make. Lay the block over the place you want the hole after the carve. Then select the block, and press: Shift+Ctrl+C. Destroy the block you made for the hole. ;)

Your other problem: I'd say you need, in the case of Hammer, the "change directory line". Say you're in c:Documents and Settings, and you type or run Half-Life (i.e. c:SierraHalf-Lifehl.exe), HL will then (with some OSes) load that EXE - and revert to c:Documents and Settings. Then it'll try and find c:Documents and Settingsgfx. You see the problem?

If you compile in Hammer, click "Expert" in the compile ("run") prompt window and check the lines that are there.

PS: I'd get out of the habit of carving. Half-Life is just as happy if you construct hallways out of seperate brushes manually, as long as all the edges meet up.

If it's not what I said... hm. Long path names maybe? Might have to re-install.

Carving: carving places your map in Hammer's slightly stupid hands. It'll do some crazy bad stuff and make your map run worse in HL (poorer FPS).

err
but its only when it is opened by another program like hammer when i open it reegularly it works fine....

PS: i am using TFC...

PPS: what should i do instead of carving?

Make individual brushes instead of carving a hole. When you start, it seems stupid and time-consuming, but once you've started doing it, it's just as fast as carving, and produces better results.

When I start cs, choose the map, press ok the message appear :

"Host_Init : Couldn't load gfxpalette.Imp"!!!

And cs doesn't star [I can't play It! I re-installed cs but nothing changed!] What should I do?

Have you checked to make sure gfxpallet.imp/lmp exists?

I don't know. Probably.

Grab the update (1.1.1.0, the last update for WON-HL) here.

i was just about to say that. on my old comp theres a shortcut on the desktop i never got round to removing for my older version of hl which gives the exact same error everytime i mindlessly click it. just get the update for hl (which should give u all dem fancy mods like tfc, ricochet and dmc) and counterstrike (which if u update from a real old version gives u fancy new icon!)

I think splash.bmp is the image that shows in the console BG, or the little 'Loading....' image. You could open your PAK and see if it's in there. If it is, copy it into the GFX folder in Valve or TFC.

It's the main background at the menu. WON only, Steam's is divided into six or so different ones.
