i am trying to compile my first counterstrike map. although your site is very helpful, i am still having problems. i can compile without any errors, but when i try to run the map in the game, i get the error, "valve/cs.wad not found"

and then the game freezes. i dont know why it does this, but i would relaly like to know how to fix it. thanks

A WAD file contains textures for Counter-Strike, Half-Life etc.

Something's not right there. According to my directory structure for CS (retail) it goes:

C:SIERRACounter Strikecstrike

The wad 'cstrike.wad' is there but not 'cs.wad'. You may have made an error when setting up Hammer for Counter-Strike. Are you using Steam? Try unpacking the gcf files with GCFScape (I think that's what it's called). If all fails, remove the wad from your Hammer list, or copy it into the directory it wants it to go in.

Yeah. If there is a valvecs.wad, ignore it. You should use cstrikecstrike.wad (and some other WADs in cstrike if you so desire).

If you are using a wad called cs.wad in hammer, you also need to place that wad in your cstrike folder.

i have cs 1.5 which i am testing all these on. i also have cs condition zero, which i do not use to test maps.

now, when i setup hammer, i never used valvecs.wad. therefore, it is not in the hammer list of wads.

i am now looking through all my counterstrike folders and i can not find any file called cs.wad. also, i searched my whole HDD for the file, and nothing came up. this is really getting on my nerves......

i tried it again, same error, but the message says: (verbatim)
WARNING: could not open valvecs.wad

Make sure that WAD is definitely not in your texture list (remove them all, restart Hammer, and re-add the ones you need, then restart again) and recompile your map.

If it still happens, just find some small WAD file, copy it to valve and rename it cs.wad.

no, i copied spraypaint.wad and renamed it but it still wont work. maybe reinstall cs, i have a ton of skins and maps added...would that be it?

You can try. Just reinstall it over the top of your previous installation. It should keep all your maps and skins.
