Everyone's always arguing about this. Let's try and settle it!

Sometimes.
When copying or building onto a already made map its stealing,
if its for learning purposes ("how the feditk did they do that!?") its ok
Posted 20 years ago2003-11-29 15:54:18 UTC Post #6023
I personally think that it's okay in one case only: non-community maps. If it's a map from someone else, hey, why not e-mail em and ask? You're not gunna ask VALVe, eh, though, are you now?

I only decompile maps to see how various things were done!

...jobabob?
Posted 20 years ago2003-11-29 22:52:43 UTC Post #6061
no but I agree

Decompiling is stupid, just ask the author first. If you think you can get any brush work from it then try another hobby, the only important part of decompilation is to get ent sequences. Which are usually so impossible to understand people just copy them ent for ent.

Decompiling....I tried it once to see how something worked...it did an ok job but the problem lies here: How do u kno if the person decompiling is trying to learn something or just modifying or copying ideas? Its easy enough to ask ppl here on the site but for the ones in Half-Life...
Decompiling isn't stupid it helps to get some ideas, check out how a particular sequence of events works. It can be very helpful. Perhaps a better system of decomiling is needed such as a 30 day decompiled map. After 30 days it doesn't work. (That isn't the gr8est idea but its a start). Ppl who wanna learn can and ppl who just wanna steal cant do it after a while.

That is a pretty good idea, actually. Pretty impractical, though, I'm afraid: who'd implement it?

its OK to steal someones ideas, for 30 days!
Posted 20 years ago2003-11-30 08:00:46 UTC Post #6093
Stealing or Not?

I think it all rests with the end-user: the person with the decompiler taking the maps and decompiling them for their own pourpose

It all rests with what kind of person you are ;)

No, i ment what you do with the stuff after you decompile it - not your social status or whatever... shesh! :D

I think If you decomplie a map made be anyone without the author's permission IT'S STEALING!!!!!

Prefabs are ok if the author had no problems with it (read the map text files) and as log as you credit the author. eh?

Decomlpie to see how it was done?

That is what Example maps are for.

We'll that is my opinion and I hold nobody to it unless it done to me. LOL
Posted 20 years ago2003-12-03 07:00:56 UTC Post #6412
Well....How bout giving credit to the author if u "implement" someone elses idea?

hey men u mix the words.its not stealing its borowing.since we r all cool and we have a common hobby. :P
Posted 20 years ago2003-12-03 07:52:46 UTC Post #6421
It's actually stealing. Imagine a person who works hard to get a map done. And then some jerk decompiles and uses it. Without the creator permission. Imagine the creator's situation. :|

Borrowing... That's when you have written permission to use his/her material.

Decompiling your own maps because you lost the ,rmf... Fully acceptable.
Posted 20 years ago2003-12-03 08:49:23 UTC Post #6426
it actually depends whether or not the original author of the pak...etc ses its stealing or they don't wan't it, but if you decompile their stuff alter it then its yours and so they can't bag you!
Posted 20 years ago2003-12-03 10:26:04 UTC Post #6448
I do have friends yes.
its unethical stealing if you use 1 authors map for your own griddy map.
If you nick the idea and alter it... its not really OK but its less bad...
if you just check to learn, it doesnt matter! The author(s) doesnt really hurt by that, eh?
Posted 20 years ago2003-12-03 10:32:03 UTC Post #6452
its ok to steal your maps Zombie
Posted 20 years ago2003-12-03 12:11:28 UTC Post #6461
if you wanna learn something i did(which i doubt) then go ahead
Posted 20 years ago2003-12-03 13:33:36 UTC Post #6471
well thats the big problem. saying unethical on the internet just gets u a few funny looks. most ppl online dont care about ethicality, (did i make that word up?) i mean take a look at cheaters, hackers, source code stealing HOOLIGANS!... well my point is not many people really care what you think if they steal parts of your map because you probably dont know them and theres a huge chance they live on the other side of the world and will never meet u.
Posted 20 years ago2003-12-03 15:37:54 UTC Post #6480
decompile my map and i'll find out where you live and come kill your parents
Posted 20 years ago2003-12-04 09:50:56 UTC Post #6536
Good point Ministeve...
That is the major problem right there... people believe that what is on the net is FREE.
I believe it isn't, but that has a lot to do with how I was brought up and the moral and ethical values that I was taught by my parents.

At the end of the day, someone elses idea is just that....
Someone elses idea.
Posted 20 years ago2003-12-04 15:46:53 UTC Post #6558
After all of this i really think that if you credit and let them know, (the people who's stuff you're using) ... everything will be ok
Posted 20 years ago2003-12-04 19:04:13 UTC Post #6578
Yes... Always is more polite to ask the author who will surely tell you how he did something and if you can copy it. If he doesn?t want to share his secrets with you, well, you can think of him that he wasn?t raised into some values and morals but you, who were raised in them, will not copy or use.
Posted 20 years ago2003-12-05 05:30:49 UTC Post #6606
Honestly, I'd only care if a map came out with a huge chunk obviously ripped from one of my maps. Otherwise people can steal my ideas all they want, it's hardly something you can police and my version will always be better ;)
Posted 20 years ago2003-12-05 06:08:18 UTC Post #6613
Hmmmm. Maybe when u submit the map? have a checkbox that says : "I give permission for this map to be decompiled" or somethinglike that. It would save time rather than having to go ask the author
