Help with downloading

I am a new member to this site and would like to start downloading some maps from the archive, but I'm not sure how. What I have done so far is zipped the file to my desktop but I dont know how to use the file with hl. could someone please give me the steps for that process? It would be appreciated.

First off, you need to extract the compiled map file, or the .bsp file, to your valvemaps directory wherever you installed Half-Life. For Steam, this is often C:Program FilesValveSteamSteamAppsUsernameHalf-Lifevalvemaps. For WON users, it's C:SIERRAHalf-Lifevalvemaps by default.
Additionaly, some maps come with custom sounds (wav or mp3), sprites (spr), models (mdl), textures (wad) etc, place these in their respective folders, such as valvesounds, or valvemodels. Wads need to go into valve.
Once you've installed these files, either run Half-Life with +map mapname or open the console, and type map mapname to run it. To run a server with the map, create a server and select the map from the dropdown box.

Thanks. It's not that I'm not lazy (I am), it's that I need to take quite a few breaks from mapping whilst working on projects in order to keep a decent amount of quality

winzip doesnt do anything with it? sure youve got winzip and not the extractor thingy?

Latest version of Winzip afaik is version 9. Get it.

Just remembered: Your file associations could be stuffed. Right click the file and go 'Open With'. Choose Winzip and tick 'Always use this application...'

I use both Winace and Winzip and don't really care which one is better, so long as it unzips my darn files!

Thanks guys. I tried it again with another map and it worked. So it wasnt a problem with winzip, it was the map file. thanks again for the help.
