cheese alert!
I want to ask my boyfriend to marry me. Heh. Yea. Stop laughing!
Being the nerd that I am I want to make a hl map with a 'marry me' or something equally mushy at the end.
</cheese>
..
Didn't i tell you to stop laughing? Get back on your chair and help me! :P

The problem is that I am a complete n00b at this whole level-building stuff, and after doing a good half hour of googling the info available is a bit overwhelming. Most 'tutorials' assume you know what you're doing, which i dont. This site is the only one I could find with a couple of beginner tutes.

So help me get started? Please? :)

That should familiarize you with the tools, and some of the terminolgy used in level editing and you'll build a sample map along the way.

Wow, are you actually a girl? If so, you must be our first female member: have a sticker. Anyhow, regardless, many happy returns or whatever you're menna say.

Thanks guys! Actually I was hoping you could also indicate some other useful sites, since I (obviously :P ) already found this one..

more questions: What editor to use?

Wait for hl2? While it looks a lot better, and will apparently be mod-friendly.. is it a good place to start? Dunno why but I have the impression that it will be a lot more complicated than the original..
And of course there's the small detail that my pc is simply not 133t enough to run it.. that needs to change though

Opinions?

You could make better environments, like a whole chruch wedding etc, and it would look damn good, but it depends how soon you want to pop teh question, you'll be waiting a little while after HL2 comes out to get started making maps for it etc.

If you have an idea, msn/email it to me or one of teh other experienced ( :P ) mappers here, and we'll tell you what you would be better off using.

I'll be willing to help, in any way, this sounds too romantic lol, I'm shocked he hasn't asked you to marry him, any girl willing to make a 'will you marry me map' would be ... well, it would only get better if she could drive a motorbike and her father owned a pub.

:D

What editor to use should be covered in the "In the beginning..." tutorials.

A little tip would be here

@PaLO: Whats with signing posts with email? Looks bloody stupid to me :P

You nublet, lol

Trying to score on teh internet is liek stabbing yourself in the face with a salty penguin:

No-one wins

I'm just trying to pimp Hostile Intent, and I decided to put my email on my name so that people could insult me twice as fast.

how the hell is stabbing your self in the face with a salty penguin the same as losing?

It's a metaphore for complete pointlessness.

stabs Zombie in the face with a salty penguin .. stop hijacking my thread already! :)
Thanks for the link, though. Is hammer the only editor out there?

@PaLO: this project is going to take a looong time anyway. Our pcs are in the same room, so I'll have to work on this when he's out.
"hey, what are you using that editor for?"
"oh, nothing....."
"let me see!"
you get the point ;)

In other words, waiting for hl2 is an option. I plan on familiarizing myself with the more.. technical? aspects of mapping in the meantime.

I'd be glad to hear more opinions/tips/ideas.. even those involving penguins.

Well, there are other editors out there, such as Quark or Qradient, but they're not designed for half-life - hammer is easily the best.

NO IT ISN'T.

For a start, it's a similie, not a 'metaphore'. Also, it's 'metaphor' ;) I ain't sure what the -phore suffix means but, yeah, anyway.

Hammer is basically the editor for Half-Life, and I imagine will be for HL? for the foreseeable future. Learning the basics of Half-Life before '? comes out is a good idea in my opinion as much will be similar :) Depends on how quick you want'ta propose really, heh.

PS: what's your av. of?
