just an idea, but it is a map pack for Opposing Force. You are a millitary person assigned with killing gordon freeman, but you are not adrian sheperd. you are on a different team that is in a different sector of black mesa. you are a reconissance unit with a team of elite fighters to learn skills for millitary operations, but you bit off more than you can chew...
i cant do this myself, id be neat if we could assemble a team of mappers and texturers; 3 to four people, and I can provide webspace to get the mod online. add on to the idea so I can develop it enough to assemble a small mod team.
Posted 20 years ago2004-11-10 18:50:29 UTC Post #72557
Sorry to say this, but this mod will probably never get finished, and if it does it won't be good.
Not many people map for opposing force.
Posted 20 years ago2004-11-10 19:16:02 UTC Post #72568
What would make it not very good? is it the overall idea, or the fact that not very many people play op4?
Posted 20 years ago2004-11-10 19:30:54 UTC Post #72571
also, the point is not to have the greatest mod ever and be ruler of the
HL mod world and all cower in your amazingly amazing awsomeness, its to learn. Besides, I like constructive critisism but c'mon, theres got to be a few ignorant noobs out there, like me, that may want to do something like this. Perhaps i'm not a good enough mapper to be at TWHL (thats why I dont post my maps in the vault) but in sure theres other people out there who would like to join a noob team and learn about sequences and what makes a good mod. And this is a note to anyone else who posts here: If you hate the idea, tell me why, I don't want to hear that it sucks and not know why, but if you like the idea tell me why as well. SOOOO G_KID, why is it a bad idea?
Posted 20 years ago2004-11-10 19:54:34 UTC Post #72575
i cant do this myself
Perhaps that's why it's a bad idea. You have too less experience to pull this off. Maybe that sounds harsh but when you take into account 99% of all initialized mods never make it, you may understand... Sure, there are a lot of n00bs out there that want to join you, but don't expect a lot of others to like the produced quality.
Perhaps i'm not a good enough mapper to be at TWHL
TWHL is a site devoted to get the beginner started. I don't expect any real quality to come from this place. Don't feel you're too bad for this site, that's why this site is here. Though it seems a certain amount of members does indeed demand quality, it's not the sites intention. I would advise you to continue mapping, listening to the comments and taking them into account. Comments can often be harsh but also very educative...

As for the mod's idea... doesn't sound really special to me. Just like a little bit different OpFor. Plus, the description is very meagre, as if you don't really have a real story thought out...
Posted 20 years ago2004-11-10 19:57:01 UTC Post #72576
You see, I've read so many times about 'really interesting story's that'll blow your mind out!!!' and I've seen so few real quality stuff, that you're just another one to me... Keep in mind that that's how a lot of people will react. You've gotta have something special, a 'selling point' as I've heard someone say a while ago. Something that's special, new, unique, interesting...

So tell me, what do you think is special about your mod idea?
Posted 20 years ago2004-11-10 20:09:10 UTC Post #72583
well, I always like your critisism, it is very helpful. as for the idea well, I didn't say it was AWSOME! i said it was a learning experience. but you are very right in what you say, perhaps I should spend some time thinking out the idea and making it unique in some way to make people actually give it the time of day.
Posted 20 years ago2004-11-10 20:19:58 UTC Post #72588
I think it's more important for you now to train your mapping skills. Thinking up a good idea is by far not all you need. After all, you need to be able to express your idea's too...

Another think is preparation. You may not have thought about it but I've found it to become an important part of my mapping projects. Without a good preparation, my projects are often doomed to failure... In fact, I still have trouble with determination on a project... These things come with experience. It's not only technical but also methodical...
Just some things you may want to consider before starting a mod... you don't want to see things fail half-way up, do you?
Posted 20 years ago2004-11-11 05:11:28 UTC Post #72622
How about the same sort of idea, except you are airlifted to a city on the out scerts of the black Mesa complex to help control the Xen threat from taking over the rest of the world, or just America. Ofcourse your mission would fail because of Half Life 2, But still to fight Aliens in a city would be cool. Kind of like Resident Evil just you are trying to prevent the Xen race from expanding onto more of earths teritories.
Maybe a crap idea to some, but definatly do-able. Another perspective view point before we head into halflife 2.

luv multi-player coop......

Okey dokey blackviper,this mod would fail because;
1)
cant do this myself
- Basically you want someone else to do it for you.

2) You don't have enough skills, you need to have a wide knowledge of everything to make a decent mod or map pack.

3) Not many peole map for op force, so not many would be able to help.

4)
i'm not a good enough mapper to be at TWHL (thats why I dont post my maps in the vault)
- So basically if you ever finish this, you wouldn't post it anyway? Pure genius, I admire your thinking, I really do.

5)Bland story, basically op force, but with less story.

6)
the point is not to have the greatest mod ever and be ruler of the
HL mod world and all cower in your amazingly amazing awsomeness
- If you made the best mod in the world, which I doubt with all my soul, then why would you be cowering to me and my "amazingly amazing awesomeness" ?

7)You don't have determination or perseverance.
I've deleted each and every (an amazing 2) maps that I've put on this site
Taken from your journal.

8)You have no grammar or punctuation, although this may seem a trivial thing, if you ever made this mod or map pack and had any text in it, it would be badly spelled and punctuated.

9)
You are a millitary person assigned with killing gordon freeman, but you are not adrian sheperd. you are on a different team that is in a different sector of black mesa.
Surely if your in a totally different part of Black Mesa, your not going to see Gordon Freeman, so how will you kill him?

Need any more reasons why this mod/map pack will not work out?

Wow G_KID, that's the most crappiest criticism I've heard in a long time. :|

Listen, I have great grammar and writing skills, I just dont implement it into my posts because I didn't think that mattered, but now its obvious that this place is not only a place for all to learn about HL mapping and HL mod mapping, but a place to exhibit fine grammar and writing abilities.
G_KID, I don't know why you seem to hate me and offer no help in a place designed for exactly the opposite of what you give, but I'd sure like to know. I can understand constructive critisism, but your earlier post was nothing but a vast collection of all the things that you could think of that had to do with bashing me into the ground. If this makes you happy (which i'm sure it does to a person like yourself) i've given up on the idea. I hadn't planned on having someone else do it for me, and if I did, then I'd be a worthless piece of shit, but its obvious that I'm not a piece of shit or else I wouldn't be posting on a website, I'd be in my backyard covered in flies. Also, do you have dyslexia or something? I said clearly in my previous post that the point was NOT to create the greatest mod on the planet, the point was to learn. I have admitted it numerous times that I am new to mapping and I don't try to act like I'm good. My worst fear is to be arrogant and go around bashing people into the ground. I'll admit you are a good mapper and have great knowledge of it, but that still doesn't give you any right to go around making newbies feel like shit. If I knew as much as you about mapping, I'd actually help people. You know, make yourself useful, if you've ever heard of such a thing. I'm sure your more than capable of being insightful, like Captain P, but I suppose your arrogance prevents you from doing so.
And That Is My Report On Telling G_KID Why He Is No Help

Mis-spell
You have no grammar or punctuation, although this may seem a trivial thing, if you ever made this mod or map pack and had any text in it, it would be badly spelled and punctuated.
Run on
Hehe
Ever heard of the space bar?
Who are you to say I have bad grammar?
nubmer
And who are you to agree with him?

He's laughing, so that is correct even though the word doesn't actually exist.

secksi
proper spelling: sexy
aniversary
proper spelling:anniversary
They sucks
This one is from his journal
proper grammar:they suck
cos
Another one from the journal
proper spelling: because
redconnected
Yet another from he journal of G_KID

hmm. I got this one from a post in his journal that speaks of him
starting a grammar class at TWHL, yet he can't spell correcly himself.
proper spelling:revoloutionize
alot
I got this one in the exact same post where I found the one above
proper spelling:a lot
Oh to be a big, fat teletubby, without a care,
I wonder how,up against a chainsaw, a teletubby would fare,
To be a big annyoying teletubby, with a TV in your tummy,
And to eat that pink crap, that they think is yummy,
Oh to have an antenna, stuck to your head,
And to sleep under silver tin foil, when in bed.
To have ears so large, you can hear anything someone may mutter,
And finally, to have an I.Q. six points below butter.
Nobody is terrible at everything, this poem above is pure talent, the best thing I've ever seen posted by G_KID
Trust me folks, I've got millions of them, but I have better things to do than waste my time at this thread. I'M OUT!

Argh, stop being spelling nazis, y'two. Even the best spellers screw up sometimes.

Things like hehe, alot, etc. are for the most part recognized forms of spelling their technically correct forms. They're usually considered correct spelling, afaik.

Actually Rabid, the word 'alot' doesn't exist at all, unlike 'Hehe' which is a sound word (onomaetopia I think).

Hem Hem

Don't bullshit about G_KID. What he is saying is that this mod was a hopeless idea in the first place, and we all know that only about less than 1% of mods actually go anywhere anyway.

Spelled appers to be an Americanism. Spelt's definitely valid, like "dreamt" and "dreamed".

I was going to ignore this thread, as I have given my input, you acted childishly, but anyway, scroll down to revolutionise, it has two spellings, it says
revolutionize, UK USUALLY revolutionise
I am from the UK.

I was the first anonymous... don't know why it didn't have me logged in... I am not any other anonymous in any of these forums, though. I like for people to know what I said.

oh, well if your from the UK, that totally lets you off the hook for all the things I put that you mis-spelled. If I had known that I wouldn't have posted that thread about the mis-spells, because I have no clue how things are spelled in the United Kingdom. Its not my place to tell you if you've spelled something wrong when I have no idea how it is spelled myself. SOO, sorry

What I've noticed is that only American's spell things differently compared to the rest of the English speaking world...

I wonder why.

What's the correct way of saying "derailed thread?" Is it hyphenated?
Posted 20 years ago2004-11-15 10:08:25 UTC Post #73244
Can I just say: Black Viper, in order to avoid this kind of shizzle, go to the IRC channel and talk tehre, it will be real time and it'll probably be a lot more polite.

G_KID, there really was no need to rip into him like that. You mis-quoted him a couple of times and didn't give him any pointers on what to do next, just because he's not going to be able to finish this mod he might still want to carry on with a simpler mapping project.

Plus the fact that the Captain gave a pretty detailed reason for Viper to discontinue his idea.

My final thoughts to Viper:

Try making a small map pack, 3 - 5 maps, just to test your actual ability. Then let us see them. Simple.
Also learn how to texture.
All you need is PSP (Paintshop Pro) and Wally (export to .bmp, open and save in Wally as .wad package) and you can become your mods texture artist. There's more mappers than there people to make the things mappers need.

Good luck in whatever you do.

Nope :)

'Thread-derailer', yes, but not 'derailed thread'.
