I assume that the new Hammer can be used to edit HL1 maps. So does it naturally follow that people can uninstall their older versions of Hammer once Source is released?

I despise redundancy.

P.S. Of course, I'm keeping my HL1 installation so I can still play HL1 maps when I feel like it. I still have the original Wolfenstein 3D installed on my laptop when I want some retro action.

It can import old RMFs/MAPs supposedly. I've only gotten MAP support to work.

Textures won't be converted over - you'll have to manually retexture or use replace.

Yes I believe so but you'd have to move the models around (or rename them)

Discussion about this on VERC a while ago concluded that all the Mod teams who were going to port their old maps across to Hammer 4, would actually be wasting their time.

You need to get your head around the new object Physics, the new Materials and the way the game plays.

It would have to be some excellent brush work that took you years, before it was worth porting....(my opinion only)

Having said that... if you figure it out could you write a tutorial...
I am sure our members will give it a bash.

Yeah, I wasn't planning to port any of my old maps to Hammer 4 (because my maps so far aren't high-quality enough to deserve the hassle). I was just wondering, just in case, when I feel extremely bored, whether it's something that can be easily done.

Apparently, it isn't. And I should heed Andy's advice that the best thing to do is move on and design brand new maps from the ground up using Hammer 4.
