I have been very thought full and scaned around the site and reading tutorials, and i started reading post on ppls maps and fourms why do i hear i hate noobie mapps there dumb they should be baned?

what are u gonna say when i post my first map?

will i get hate mail 2?

i think ppl should encurage each other and help them get along.

after that i think we should develop a maping team.

or this is a thought..

maybe u should encurage the noobie mapers to down load the uncompleted maps and play with those and see what come out?

I think you should use proper English if you want any respect on this forum from anyone.

If you'd actually read enough, you'd've found it's not really that great an idea to post your "first map". I didn't, and most of the regulars here didn't. Practise, practise, and don't release anything until you know nearly everything.

I don't think getting people to play with stuff other people've already made is gunna help them learn too much, either.

Just have to practise, in my opinion. If you don't, you won't ever make anything worth playin'.

That's right... Seventh didn't post his first map. He sent it to me :-)

If you are worried about what people say about your work, then you might be in the wrong place?
You can not please all people all the time.
Post away....
I like Noobie maps, just make sure you post a screen shot.

You shouldn't post your first map because no one wants to see shit like "OMG FFS THE DOOR THE DOOR - ITS MOVING UP!1111" - "ITS REEELY FUN U CAN KILL A SCIENTIST!!!!!!111?". Emmmh.
Just don't publish any map that doesn't look good up against the competition, saves you the pain of seeing it flamed.

Some noobs learn their lesson and learn to map. But some repeatedly ignore friendly advice until the point everybody hates them.

A good map isn't just fancy effects and architecture (unless it's a DM map). A good single-player map must have nice gameplay and a story behind the gameplay (even if the story isn't metioned in the map itself). It must have interesting and challenging areas as well as looks.

and never post an aim_, fy_, kz_, knife, killbox or any other gimmick maps. people here judge the map on how its MADE, not on how you play it. the gameplay is an important factor, but nobody can concentrate on gameplay if the walls, floors and ceilings look exactly the same.

Here's the deal:

People here don't have a problem with newbs. They have a problem with newbs who think that their first map is the best thing since cell phones and continuously hammer (no pun intended) this forum with pointless remarks. They are fed up with the newbs who don't have patience. The newbs who are looking for instant gratification.

If you're a newb, and you're up front about it, nobody has a problem with that. If you make a map and post it, be prepared for criticism... that's why this is here. If we all told you your map was the best thing since cell phones, we'd probably be lying and it would benefit you not all.

Chances are, you already know what is wrong with your first map. The experience of creating it teaches you alot. Some people may learn and revise their "first" map over and over (some members here should note a "first map" may have been revised several times) and have learned the ins and outs of the most basic things. But one thing is sure. If you don't post it, you will never know what people think about it. You will never be able to gauge when you are no longer a "newb" mapper.

Post your map.

Seventh is not from the US.

Who-da-Mapper: Don't feel to bad. It's probably anonymous messing around. Just disable ratings or don't care.
Keep it up.
Posted 20 years ago2004-12-19 16:51:59 UTC Post #79146
If someone spam-rates your map, ignore it, and if you want to, disable ratings. However, NEVER EVER rate your own maps. EVER. Otherwise I will come round to your house and remove your reproductive orgrans.

Unfortunately, TWHL was literall devestated by the arrival of this anonymous chappy. Eversince then it's been on a bit of a downfall, and the atmosphere is on a decline. Just as WCD's dream predicted. Just don;t let 'em make it blue instead of orange...
Posted 20 years ago2004-12-20 14:22:19 UTC Post #79350
I apologise for my harsh reply then. I just wanted to point out that one shouldn't be flamed for his/her English... after all, there are ppl on this site (I won't mention names) that talk much worse than that... either way, I apologise, you are right, one CAN say practise and practice (I didn't know that before :P ) ... btw, if this "Anonymous" guy is such a pain in the rear end, why doesn't one of the mods ban him? :o
Posted 20 years ago2004-12-20 16:11:25 UTC Post #79375
Its not what TWHL is about.

Besides, i don't think we have the facility to ban people. This is both a curse and a blessing.

Curse as in: we get people posting crap, blessing, as in: through Spam, you see who is mature enough NOT to participate...
Posted 20 years ago2004-12-20 19:56:50 UTC Post #79400
Jahzel: Too true. Although the blue thing was probably just to show that it hasn't happened to the real TWHL yet. Maybe it was a warning of things to come, although in a way, with Anonymous pissing everyone off, this is already happening :(
Posted 20 years ago2004-12-20 21:11:52 UTC Post #79403
I can't stand coming here knowing that sooner or later Anonymous is gonna say something ludicrous and cause a great deal of frustration.

People who natively speak English and don't bother to spell properly when asking for assistance evidently can't be bothered and don't deserve as much help. It's fair enough if it's a second language, and I respect people for trying in these cases.

Practice is a noun, practise the verb, i.e.:

I need more practice.
I practise the electric viola on Friday evenings.
Practise! (imperative)
The doctors' practice is closed.

My first map: A room, a grunt and a gun. :)
Posted 19 years ago2004-12-24 17:50:52 UTC Post #79637
WOW! My first map: Some grunts, some sentry guns, a ladder, some weapons, some pillars, and walls made of water. It wasn't a proper ladder either.
Posted 19 years ago2004-12-26 05:33:30 UTC Post #79719
My first map was, I'm fairly sure, a STEEL-textured hollowed cube for CS with two spawns. Another early one was a p90 map, all textured in grass, topiary-style.

i've learned this along the course of being here: don't post your map until YOU think your done, then post it here and see what people say and add to it. I've realized that when I post a map half way done, people will tell me how much it sucks even though its nowhere near done. You lose confidence when you post at the begging stages, and your no longer motivated to resume.
Posted 19 years ago2004-12-28 05:35:18 UTC Post #79892
Unless it's really good, but unless you're some kind of mapping god, it might be wiser not to do so.

I prefer posting maps on snarkpit as i get more positive there lol which is a bit of a bad thing seeing as i cant see whats wrong if they dont tell me and i will think my maps are good even though they are probably crap

i posted my first map here and it sucked so much (i have improved greatly) and i learnt never to post crappy maps unless you want to get bad comments about it.
