Well guys I finnally got my new Computer for X-mas...WOOHOO...and I tried installing hl2 on a linux... and It never worked after repeting the installation a number of times, through steam, and the process takes sooo damn long, and there are soo many problems such as, ERROR 1334, or 1331, or corrupted cabs,
..I think Valve should have fixed these problems instead of rushing to get the game out, It took for ever and it still isnt installed. I relize the steam engine automatically fixxes some problems such as ERROR 1334 but come on, They put out a game with errors and figure they'd put out the updates to corrupted files on steam, sounds sloppy if you ask me.

Anyone else had these kind of problems?

Sorry Seventh if u consider this spam--Im just sooo pissed of, I waited three months!--

By the way anyone else more familiar wit steam than me--any insights would be appreciated. :)

Yeah, I'm not sure it's compatible with unix. Haven't had any errors meself.

STFU Rileymo! Windows is the problem. If they never invented it, we would all use Linux and FreeBSD would be considered the geeks OS instead :o HL2 works with Linux. Get proper video drivers and recompile the kernel with GART support. Then setup Xfree86. You could try using X.org but I prefer Xfree86 for compatability reasons. Then install/run HL2 using a cedega installation of Steam. Not that fucking hard if you have braincells.

Linux will not make your machine explode. I don't know what you have against a stable, secure, resource-friendly, although a little difficult to use, operating system, but your arguments against Linux doesn't make much sense I'm afraid. :(

Darnit why does this keep happening to me? Why?! Why?! I write long posts and it gives me a database error. :(

I bassicly said that if you people will try Windows XP, I'll try Linux. I need a distro that will run on mynew PC expected January. Specs are:

AMD Athlon Classic 850MHz
512MB
40GB Hard Drive
Uknown Video Card.

I HAVE tried Windows. And have used it since the early days. And I have more bad things to say about it than good. Rofl! You need a distro to run on that. Anything will run on that. For example, although its BSD, not linux, FreeBSD will run on a 386 with 4mb of RAM smoothly in text mode. And in X mode it should run in 16mb of RAM on a 386. Linux specs are a little more demanding, but still, your system is more than enough.

Yes! I have tried every version since DOS 1.01 all the way to 2003 Enterprise Server and all of them suck compared to Unix.

Macintosh has always been Unix-based. Linux is a freindly(er) Unix. The best reason for using a Unix based system is that it's not nearly as redundant as an IBM based system. Your programs don't require 500mb of space like they do in Windows. The second best reason is that it computes faster than IBM based systems. That means you can render your graphic things faster, like in AutoCad or XSI. Windows will always rule the world because it's the cheapest, easiest way to do simple tasks, like email. You won't find many places that use computers for calculating things (like NASA or Pixar) using an IBM system for that... their just too slow. And time = $$$. Though it's more cost effective for their infrastructure to use Windows for the memos, emails, and pictures of people's butts that circulate thorughout any given office.
