My dad's Windows XP laptop can't get on the Internet. It was working two days ago...I'm trying to use System Restore, but it won't work. It keeps telling us that we don't have enough security privliges but we ARE an administrator (it even tells us in the user accounts menu in control panel), and I've also tried logging on to Administrator (there's always an Administrator username), but it's passworded and I don't know the password. (gosh, stupid Windows XP :x :x ) I need help!

try restarting it in safe mode or boot from the windows cd

Never heard that XP would do that.. I dont know what things you can do as a "normal" user.
Last choice is that you've gotta format & reinstall xp

windows just plain sucks.

we have an iMac G4 at home and we havent had to restart it in months. just leave it running and it works fine. i wish my PC could be like that. i have to restart every few days or else everything just starts crashing.

I've already tried safe mode and still doesn't work. I haven't tried the Windows CD, though. And I don't think my dad wants to format and reinstall : .

u can reinstall without reformating

but you cant reinstall if you dont have priviledges..

But we do; it's just that System Restore won't recognize them...

I have.

Is there a Guest account set up on your computer.. for ex.

Your dads account.
Your Account.

You might be signing into your account. This won't give you access to this func. Along with system defragment, or even installing programs.

You have to log in to your fathers account in order to do the system restore. :)

Good luck

So another words. You need the admin password! Try searching system files for an ".ls" folder type. and download a password cracker. then run the .ls folder in it. And you might get the password.

if it comes to reformatting, back up all your files on another hard drive or put them on CD/DVD. i believe windows has a program that does that but its windows so who knows if it works even.

I don't have an account. The laptop has my dad's account and my mom's account (and a guest one). Neither of them have passwords. But hey, the password cracker might work...hopefully I can use it to figure out Administrator's password.

Another thing, where is the password cracker you are talking about? I can't find any. I want it free, too.

C'mon, it's still not fixed...I NEED SUGGESTIONS :zonked:

Don't use System Restore. I don't trust it.
Why? When virus scanning ages ago, I'd pick up the same viruses in the same places. After a while I realised it was the System Restore folder.
As for your Internet problem, have you checked with your ISP to make sure they haven't done anything?

I dislike System Restore too. If something's broke, fix it, don't try and dodge it. Does nobody remember the admin password?

Nobody knows the admin PW, and it's not the ISP. All of the other computers work with internet fine. It even says there's a connection on the laptop, but running Internet Explorer (or Firefox or Netscape) won't come up with the page.
And Anthony, I believe that's because the computer probably made a checkpoint while you had a virus, and Windows disallows modifications in the System Restore folder.

Ok, I'm at school right now, and I forget where I got the cracker, however I have it at home on my computer, so I'll search it up later on tonight.
