Isn't three months a bit long to wait for a new compotition? The results came out a while ago and it is taking forever for a new one to start.
Posted 19 years ago2005-02-08 01:37:47 UTC Post #88877
You are right. As far as I know there is no reason why we don't have a new one yet. Maybe someone should do their own.

I've still got to talk to Andy and/or Alex. We all have lives you know, and different timezones.

I think you should resort to e-mail, as nothing seems to be likely to happen for awhile otherwise. I'm a lot more busy so I don't get time to hang around on IRC enough for it to be worthwhile waiting for me there.

It os not hard to start a compotetion. But it is hard to finish one, right? To start one all you must do is add it to the competetions section, right?
Posted 19 years ago2005-02-08 20:53:56 UTC Post #89131
A bit harder than it sounds, apparently ;/

I think they should annouce the new compo first, and then recieve entries at a later date.

It's not as easy as "Add the competition to the site." Atom/(7th?) has to manually add the info which contains the idea of the last winner. He has to make a change to the announcement at the top right corner and make a link there, plus make space for the entry uploads. It sounds like it wouldn't take long or be hard, but it is.

Totally right... They should start a thing (for us frustrated over long result-new compo times) where they have a contest, then, it takes some time. Meanwhile they are judging, they need to come up with a NEW compo. And, then it says, "Check out "build blah" compo results, meanwhile, start on the new build "whatever" contest!" , so contests would go a bunch BUNCH faster.

We did unofficial 'mini-compos' a while ago. Someone should start it up again.

A good idea, I'd do it, if it were during the summer... but it's not, so I don't have time.

Even though it'd be nice to have another compo (one in which I could finally participate), I don't think a mapper has to be waiting for this kind of thing. While you're waiting for another challenge, you should just map, map & map on your own and forget about guidelines and deadlines. Imagination is not only about inspiration, you have to exercise it ;)
Compos are indeed a good way to see how different people come up with different solutions to a given proposal. Same thing happens with architects and buildings.
Posted 19 years ago2005-02-09 22:07:57 UTC Post #89378
Or someone should write a PHP script for atom to put iup in the corner and to have as the results page. Then its just like submitting a map or posting a post. Easier and atom doesnt have to do it. :)

How about this.

Next compotition, the administrators of this site decide the compotition. Then, while they judge that compotition, the person who won last time chooses the next compotition that will take place as soon as the current one ends. That way, there will always be at least one compotition at a time and no struggle for a new compotition.

Recap: The person who won this time waits until the next one is over to choose the compotition theme (which will take place while the maps are being judged). Then the process repeats, the next person who wins waits until the current one ends and then chooses the next compotition theme.

In other words, the person who wins waits until after the next compotition to end before choosing the compotition theme.

I hope this makes sense.

Then we get into the 'more admins' debate, etc - Only a couple of the admins visit here frequently, so it'd be up to them... :F - I say stick with what we have, the organization and the system seems to work fine save for the time problem.

Yah, but they only need to choose once. Or the member on this site can start the one and only vote, just to decide what it should be. Once we could surpass the first step, then it is all easy from there. Did you inderstand what I said in my last post?

Takes time for people to decide, for the webbie to post it, et cetera. Jus' be patient.

I can start an "un-official compo site".. Its not gonna be godly awsome, but I can make it if people want it that bad. And if it is me to make that, I need to choose some judges... Or we can all vote... (somehow)...

Well, in any case, we get bored when there is nothing to make maps for. But while people get bored they think about what to map, then thier creativity comes out when they think of something to map. But the reason I made this thread is because it has been a while since the last compotetion.

*We could make two compotitions at a time with a set of judges for each one, and the compotitions are connected in no way what so ever. That way, who ever edites and changes this site won't have to be a judge and only needs to change the site when the judges decide who wins. The compotitions can be one Half-Life and one Half-Life 2 Counter Strike Source half-Life Deathmatch. Now, with this system everyone has their own jobrole, and the community gets more involved this way. Comments?

Well, I don't think I would be up to it Grim, because, there are no rewards... Another words, no Trophies.. and tropies on this site gives respect. Talk to atom, and ask him about interlinking You webpage to this on. Another words at the end of each compo, you give atom the 1,2, and 3rd winner's name, and he adds a trophy. This way is a good Idea because, it would not need alot of orginization for the moderators of this site.

So yep contact a moderator with the idea grim. ;) Good luck..

How can we judge the maps from hl1 and hl2 ? Probably the guy who entered to competition with a hl2 would win :
Posted 19 years ago2005-02-12 15:16:06 UTC Post #89939
Bigger textures dont mean better maps. A good HL1 map is still better than a bad HL2 map, right?
I dont think using the source engine should give extra points, it just wouldnt be fair

Screw the rewards.. Im in it to keep the people interested in mapping other pointless mapping with nobody to congradulate you... Its gonna be nuthin great, but hey, its compos =)

Is it HL2? as well?

I don't see how because there are'nt any xen textures for HL2 :(

That does'nt mean that they can't be made to work! on HL2

Me = hate HL2

I think any compo on this site should be HL1. Mainly because that's what most people can map for, play and judge. This site was created for HL1, not HL2. It's ok if we have forums and tutorials and stuff for h2, but if we do competitions for hl2 it should be seperate.

Thats right. Its hl2 as well.Yes,I know hl2 doesnt have any xen textures so that means you are gonna make it or just use hl1 hammer.

I love making xen maps but now that i'm used to the new hammer i had a go at the 3.5 version and it felt weird for the first time in my life!

If you get people joining then carry on with it and make a prize but people seem busy these days!

yes,I had the same feeling :o ,
Thinking of a prize,

1-A moderator in my site :)
2-A trophy in TWHL (in Profile)
3-Rank :P
4-Just ''you are the winner''

which it should :
