Is there a program that can convert Source models to Half Life models? I know .mdls exist but they also iclude the crazy .vtfs or whatever that also run with the model.
Posted 19 years ago2005-03-02 15:32:50 UTC Post #94620
Google is a great thing for doing this. It can convert just about any format from YOU'RE to AN and even IDIOT! It's amazing! Use it today at www.google.com - noob.

Yeah right, like hl can handle source models

As suggested by kol, though, one might steal a low-LODded version and reverse-port it, perhaps.

Half Life can handle any poly count for models, its just a matter of the persons computer. I've seen models that exceed ten thousand polygons before.

And just what am I going to google, Zombie? "Program that lets you convert Source models to Half life models"? Forget it, its much more convienient to ask people who probably already know where to get such a program then looking through thouands of search results, most fo which are probably other thread asking smeone for the same thing but then SOMEONE TELS THEM TO GOOGLE I AND THEY GET STUCK IN THE SAME THING. Wow, thats a mouthful.
Posted 19 years ago2005-03-03 23:34:20 UTC Post #94927
When did I get into all this?
And no, there's most probably no such program.
Posted 19 years ago2005-03-04 05:16:51 UTC Post #94954
I doubt that a program like this exists. Your FPS will take a hit when running high poly models.

One thing I don't understand is why: From what I remember, your computer can't even run animated GIF's properly, let alone high poly models. If it could run high poly models, why not just map for HL2?

I got a new one a while back with a low end Radeon. I can run Source games averaging about 70-80 fps.

I prefer to map for HL1, its more fun. Source mapping is just too annoying in my opinion.
Posted 19 years ago2005-03-04 18:24:56 UTC Post #95066
Annoying? I think it's pretty much the same thing, but with more control over lighting, skyboxes and a big big etc ;)

Yeah, I agree, Kasperg.

Reasons why I prefer to stay away from Source mapping:
1.You must press enter to create an entity, I have been using right click and "create object" for such a long time that it messes with my mind and i get confused.
2. Its hard to make maps good enough quality to live up to the great Source Engine
3. The grid is annoying as crap, it sarts off normal, but after you zoom in or out you cant get it back and all the sqaures are uneven.
4. You must run Steam to run run Hammer (ugh)
5. You cant run it without Steam
6. You must start up Steam to start up Hammer
7. Steam is required to map for Source.

Umm...

Your first one refers to Personal Habit.
Your second one seems to refer to a lack of skill. It's a very biased comment. You can't expect to be brilliant from the word go.
Your third one is confusing. That's NEVER happened to me.
Your last 4 points all repeat each other.

I had never used Steam before I bought HL2. So I can talk from a relativelly unbiased viewpoint because I don't have any past mistakes from Steam that I've had to deal with. I don't find it too much of a hiderence.

Well.. Ant's points are correct.

1. Get out of that habit. It can't be too hard.
2. It's shit easy to make a decent looking map in Source. I've seen first maps that'd rival maps made by experts. Your comment does seem to refer to a lack of skill on your behalf.
3. What the hell are you talking about?
4, 5 and 6. Steam doesn't make much of a difference. Sure, it might take a minute longer. Who cares? If you can't wait a minute, you are an impatient fool.

That's my 2 cents. :

My personal habit is to place entities in 3d view :/

With practice, you improve. Noone went into Soruce thinking they'd make the next HL2 right from the start. Noone's expecting you to make it, either. Just start off at your own pace and build your skill at your own speed.

Grid is fine for me :/

Steam is actually rather tolerable. Just set it to start at startup and ignore it :F

Yes, I must admit, Steam is becoming very tolerable. I'm starting to get used to it, and it does actually make (some) things easier.

I certainly don't agree with Rabid on the run-at-start thing, I must say ? unless you do nothing but map on the PC, it's a waste of resources. Call me neurotically techno-tidy :).

Some things are much better, like the automatic setup shizzle. Far fewer "wtf i cant srot this hammer out gayhax zomg help!!1plz" posts.

LOL, no program can handle any polycount. hl is havgin a hard time wiht 200, over 10.000 is like a ritual suicide of your machine. If you dont know anything about models and polycounts then dont say you can have higher then 10.000, you made yourself look like a fool

A usp model for Counter Strike with over 10,000 polygons. My computer, and Counter Strike, can handle it without losing any fps.
Posted 19 years ago2005-03-06 01:27:39 UTC Post #95399
you are stupid. yea steam was the worst thing to ever happen to hl but get over it. only took me a day

and the only person with a program for hl2 mld files to hl1 is a persong who makes millions of dollars working for valve lol. and i doubt even they have such a program.

for some one to actually write a program for this they would have to have a lot of time on there hands.(2-4 years 3 hours a day) and im not kidding they would have to spend a lot of time decrypting the extra files needed with the hl2 mld file and then take the right data and then re compress it in mdl for hl.

guess what im a programer. guess what else it would take a year because of intense codding the reason why valve codded every thing that has to do with mdls for hl2 in about 3 months is because they have like 20 programers that work till like 8 am to 3-7 pm how do i know ive watched sevral the making of a game videos where they show a day in the making of a game and how long the team of 40 people work on the game (programers, modlers mappers game artist and sound effects people etc) and how long they work for depands on the company and how much money there getting payed. example some one who gets payed to make a game twice as much to make a game would probally work longer every day on the game then a comapny who pays half that.

and hey noob im one of those people who look threw 5000 google results trying to find someting and you wouldent know how many goodies i find on like the 100th page lol.

just gotta be patient.and who knows mabey some dumb ass with no life really did wast 4 years of his life on such a program. searching google takes patients.

O_O no its not it took the people who made half life 2 3 years i belive.
and many use full not very well know programs i have took around a year to make
Posted 19 years ago2005-03-06 16:28:48 UTC Post #95493
and umm actually i dident mean to say it would take 2-4 years making such a program i was thinking of something else but it would take 3 months to a year depending on if the programer felt like makking a crap program or not

It would not take a year to code a program to convert from one established polygonal model format to another :|

hahahhaha very funny i have gotten into a bad habbit of typing to fast. and i am a programer go on google and look for c++ tutorials or something duhhhh and it could i have friends who kik ass at c++ and they have made similer programs except it was made for mutiple model formats such as quake 1 2 and 3 half life enter the matrix even though it distorted those models a bit umm i think it did avp 1 and 2 and soldier of fortune 1 and 2.

and dont belive me i can email you guys a couple of games still dont belive i made them tell me to make a new game that i probaly couldent find on google if i was a liar and i will make it.

but im not good at 3d games never really got the hang of that direct 3d coding stuff lol.

If you're that good, kevin mod, then show us. Free webspace isn't hard to get these days...

Oh, and DirectX can be pretty confusing at first. OpenGL might be simpler to start with.
Posted 19 years ago2005-03-07 22:42:25 UTC Post #95777
hmm i might try that and id rather e-mail you the games any ways there about a meg or less and im not that good i just have a couple games i made that i enjoy playing they dont cost anything and there not trials.

and for the 3d mapping part i have my friend krisse code out a little program like hamer but much harder and anoying to use but it has the grid and stuff and change veiws its kool.

if you guys really wanna play some of my games i will e-mail you guys space wars and war with iraq 2 and 1 in a zip. so i need your e-mail and i wont spam you.

You really need to learn how to type properly and use correct grammer.
Also, I don't want you e-mailing me stuff, since it's probably virus-filled gayporn.

Just get some damn webspace.

kevin mod, you are a stuck up little 12 year old who thinks he knows everything. Masterofpuppets on the other hand, actually knows what he is talking about, as does everyone else. So how about taking an english and grammar class and proving that you are this "experienced coder" that you seem to think you are. Until you can prove to me or us for that matter that you know what the fuck you are talking about, then you're a n00b to me.
