When you talk about minimod format, I suppose this would be a zipped folder that would be place along valve, dmc, ricochet etc in the Half-life folder, and it would be loaded via the custom game menu, right?

I'd like to know if this must be done the normal way (liblist.gam etc) or is there anything new that must be done with STEAM? I'm asking this question because I'm using a HL installation independent from STEAM.
?
Posted 19 years ago2005-03-16 08:08:45 UTC Post #97271
The former is correct. It doesn't have to be loaded via the custom game menu afaik.

I bet the moderators will be having just as fun of a time, as we are mapping when it comes time to view the entries. :P

I have a great idea that has rarely (or not at all!?!?) been done, but I probably don't have enough time (school...).

Guy's n Girls...
If this is anything like all the other compos, you will drive yourselves mad thinking of something to map while the deadline rapidly approaches, and then at the last minute you will have a brilliant idea and no time tio impliment it.

Decide what you are going to map and start TODAY!
Remember that you are your own worst critic.
I would prefer to see 20 crap entries :-) and 10 good entries instead of 1 entry that was Ok, and no one else entering.
Posted 19 years ago2005-03-17 08:09:14 UTC Post #97473
Same here. Of course, I'd rather have thirty superb maps and have to spend a week judging.

I take that back (sort of)...I'll still work on it when I come home and possibly in the morning (and obviously on the weekends). :)

Bugger this 'come in IRC and I'll show you' crap. Mainly since I can't be in IRC for 24 hours and the Aussie timezone is a quite awkard timezone with other members.

I'll just post them here to scare people off. I figure if someone chooses to steal my idea, they are idiots. As the judges already know mine is like this, any copies will be known straight away. :)

No lighting yet, but here they are. Yes, the engine is breaking in half, and yes, the idea of doing this in the HL1 engine is unique. :)

Hopefully that scares away some people. :o

oh, so your stealing from farcry now are you. but luckly farcry hasn't been done in HL yet so it does fit the compo rules, but is stil not very original overall.

How big can the file size be for this? Is there no limit?
Unbreakable UnbreakableWindows 7.9 Rating!
Posted 19 years ago2005-03-18 15:58:07 UTC Post #97730
Not really. I mean, really big might be dubious for Andy/Ant (is Andy judging?), you'd have to ask them.

You do, of course, need hosting for files larger than 2MB. I can host peoples' maps for them if they require it (please, don't use some crappy server like Freewebs!)

2. You may submit as many entries as you like.
Does this mean you can submit 100 different maps or 100 different versions of the same map--If one was inclined, and thought 100 was a nice round number...

I don't mind massive downloads. However, anything over 50 megs is a bit much.

Posted 19 years ago2005-03-18 20:31:47 UTC Post #97778
Yeah, I would agree, but what I'm really asking is I could submit 5 different maps, I wanted? Not that this would be an issue for me, considering to date, I've never uploaded a map to the 'finished' section... :P

Trapt: nice job. I like the way you transitioned grass to sand. The other textures look amazing as well. Looks a bit unnaturally angular in some places, but I'm sure you'll make get any kinks out before submitting the final prodcut.

Not particularly. I wasn't thinking of FarCry when I first thought of it, but it did occur to me afterwards. The truth is, what you have seen in those screenshots is one tiny little area of what I have planned, so no-one knows what the end product will look like. I think it is pretty damn original, just the thought of doing such a location in the HL engine.

Also, I find it unfair that my map can be called unoriginal because it is similar to a game which I did NOT have in mind when I thought of the idea.

I find it a bunch of bullshit that my idea can be concieved as unoriginal simply because it looks like a different game. After all, if it looks like a different game, it doesn't look like the game it really is, it must be unique, since it looks entirely different from the original game.

Sorry if this came across as rude or something, but I felt it had to be said.

Got an idea now :)
I'm making a sports/leisure complex...I might add a few special features to it, but atm it's just for walking around in. I haven't got a storyline etc for it yet, I'm just messing around with ideas, but it's looking good so far.
