Yay.

Here's an update from Muzz.

I won't be able to map these days, because my videocard fan has passed away (RIP).

So, i got to wait for a new card. If everything goes well, i should have my new card this week.

Just checking in. Thing are slow but steady on my end. I'm adding a begginning cliffy cavern area for the truck to drive through, so it's an actualy transition to underground, rather than "oh shit, i'm underground all of a sudden".

Cliff walls are not easy to make. :(

But I'm doing it, and it's looking decent. Question: What r_speeds should shoot for as a max?

Sounds cool coldfeet.. As for the path up to overground, forget it, jest make a corner with a clip brush and a level change.. the path down will be at the end of chapter 2 instead of at the start of three.. Of course, you can still make a longer path down if you want - its your map, but just keep in mind that it shouldnt be able to see daylight...
R-speeds.. pfft.. i havent ever mapped for r-speeds standards so whateva...

And habboi, i did use paths, but when it banks to turn, the tail goes through a building...

Well it's also nighttime when my map starts - moonlight just looks to cool. When I finish up the guard station in the corner and get a few more lights up, I'll send you another updated version of my map so you can see it and what I'm talking about. I think it looks good, and shouldn't be too hard to make a transition for.

2 things:

1 - Hunter, can you post a copy of the newest ZHLT tools on the site? For some reason I can't ever connect to the site (always says "can't be found") and I want the newest build.

2 - Aimed mainly at MuzzleFlash because of his experience - can I add moving spotlights? I know I can do rotating, but can I make one move from a few locations, like from a guardtower for example?

I had a same problem and I just kept clicking it every so often until i eventually got on to it!

I even googled it and somehow managed to get it to connect!

I can't make your chapter 2 because city maps are not my thing and i'm tired of making city maps ever since my brilliant looking one which turned into a disaster (pics in my journal)!!!

I never want to map a city map AGAIN!

Ow man, goddamn videocard! Im sorry for the delay, guys. But ill will be mapping very soon!

As for the moving searchlights:

You cannot have the light itself to move, its simply not possible, but you can make the actual lightbeam movable. The lightfixture itself should be a func_door_rotating, so it actually swings, like a real searchlight.

As for a playable bsp, its still a bit early.

hey kevin, that map is stunning!
awsome work!

A few things,

o Texture alignment on the truck is all buggered.

o The gaurd tower's roof is reasonably detailed but the player will never see it.. reduce compile times by cutting it.

o im desperate to see behind that door! your use of lighting and architecture adds brilliant tension.

o You should make a seperate bit of tunnel for the journey and set it to a func_train like whats used in the opp4 intro.

o The lights are awsome.

o add some func illusionaries to make em even better.. maybe one from the gaurd tower..

And lord2k, your downloads page is unlinked. i cant see your work.

Thanks Hunter. I can't wait to get more of my map done. A few notes:

-I have done no serious texture work yet - all will be fixed and looking more realistic. I've been expirementing with texture ratios and r_speeds - I don't want to cause anyone lag.

-That guard tower will be redone, and a way up to the top will eventually be added, and with the addition of a moving spotlight.

-That door will won't be enterable by the player, just a grunt is going to walk out of it, talk to the driver of the truck, and open a big door that will be on that back blank tunnel wall. The truck will then drive in and proceed down a lift further underground.

-Yeah, that's my plan! You are going to ride in the back of that truck through a few tunnels and down a lift or two, until you get to the main security checkpoint, which guards access into the shipping/recieving yard of the research facility. There, the player is going to have a few options of where to go, with a few ways I don't want to mention because I don't want to give anything away.

-Thanks about the lights. I've only used textlights, spotlights, and 1 light environment. No point based light entities yet - I'm going for realism and they haven't fit yet.

-I'll haev to check out that func_illusionary thing. Is that for adding the "halo" effect around lights? Yeah, I'll definately have to add a few of those.

yeah func_illusionary is what it used for the halo effect (i use it for that anyways) but it is more commonly used for light shafts.. like if its a dark room with a hole in the top, you make a brush of yellow, stream it down the sirection the light is going and make a a func illusionary on texture - 50 and it looks good..

Hmm, I was thinking of participating in the next compo, but it seems like a really open ended contest. I don't know what I would do for it.

Just curious, why are there aliens and such in your map, Hunter? I'm not going to use any aliens, maybe a few caged up and looking like experiments at most.

What the hell is a Gargantua doing in your section anyway? Is there any logical reason for how he got there? I'm just curious..... :lol:

lol, all is explained in chapter 6.. The G-man (taking on his more shadowy role as the 'bad guy') had released them into this world on purpose... okay thats rubbish... basically because i love that gargantua pit idea from sven co-op and i wanted it in a hl map.. so i made it... as for the second one, its gone.. it was just plain annoying.

In my second map, i wanted it to look like the grunts had been overpowered by the aliens and this is later explained by the fact that g-man is behind a locked door, just waiting for the entrance cinematic of chapter 6... did that make sense? :)

So coldfeet and muzz, how far did you get on the current version whic his on our site? remember that one of the crates inside the garg pit breaks to reveal a secret passage.

yeah... when i was searching for a 1.8 GHz P4 chip, it took me at least a month... Stupid Intel only make a 1.4, a 1.7, a 2.4 and something else higher anymore.. they dont care about us on a medium range budget.
