Apparently, dm_resistance got a runner up (but it's not from Kasperg).

I dont know If I said so in my journal long ago, but the initial CD verification thing, along with a buildcubemaps malfunction, reduced my mapping time to 30% of what it could have been.
At least the swimming pool project I also made during Christmas allowed me to pass one subject at university.

Errata for press release

Regarding "one reason to have a contest like this is to highlight the quality of work that the community is capable of producing".

This should read:

"One reason to have a contest like this is to avoid getting our mapping team to produce more than two maps. That way we save money. I mean, they'd end up being paid more than the prizes. Haha, trusty fools."
Will you both be releasing your compo maps in the 'Vault now? :)

dm_avalon... Isn't that by 3d-mike?
Posted 19 years ago2005-03-19 06:29:54 UTC Post #97838
yes it is. It's a nice thing he got mentioned since the map is very nice, but it was off-theme and wouldnt get the prize. Avalon would probably be better for Unreal Tournament.

Sweet.

<3 3D-Mike.

Looks pretty UTish, I thought that when I first saw it.

Dm_Avalon reminds me of Disney land and the TV series, "The Prisoner".

If rabid would've gotten around to entering petrol, he most likely would've won or at least been a runner up :

...
Too many layout and performance issues that have already been discussed (no offense here Rabid ;) )
What was the other map Habboi?

I was hoping perhaps Hydro by Agent Smith would win or come runner up. It was an amazing looking map, and it had a decent layout. Unfortunately, it had performance issues.

I'm thinking VALVe were going for good looks over gameplay somehow. :

Very true...

Only to show off their game and get more customers to fall into their money scheming trap!

Exactly, that was what I was getting at. They seem to prefer money over customer satisfaction. :<

I bet, however, that it will only us mappers who will have true opinions on the maps as they are. We can see passed the looks and look further into the map. Unfortunately, not much HL2ers map, so... meh.

Damn straight ;( - It was intended as a fun little project to learn Source which it ended up being, and failed in everything else ;D

I seriously think Powerhouse should have won, it looks way better than Underpass :/

Powerhouse was made by Michael 'Wolf' Schulz, who if I'm not mistaken won the PHL mapping contest with his map Rapidcore years ago.
Anyway, if you guys want to see a decent map with good performance, I think I finally managed to make one... (screenie can be found in my journal)
I have been testing fps and never get lower than 50 on highest settings, so I hope it will play nice when filled with players and deadly flying props

I have heard from people who have played Underpass that it isn't too much of a decent map to play on.

Sure was.

Beauty, just the thing for 33kers who, for some reason, attempt to play HL2DM. ;)

wow, they're really stupid. i bet there wasn't even a doctor to catch them. people like that should only be allowed to play board games, especially the Austrialian ones. ;)

Lol heh heh anyway I should know cause I played dm_underpass and it lagged in areas :S

Especially when I started moving without touching the keyboard in areas :S

Playing board games online causes extremly severe lag. I'm talking about pings of over 2500. I usually have to close all programs that take up bandwidth, including Opera. :D

Okay, I've taken a look at the three winning maps, and sadly I'm just a bit dissapointed:

-Underpass: apart from the very nice outdoor section that we saw in the screenshot, the rest of the map has IMO too many cramped hallways and underground sewers, the type of thing we would expect from maps like lambdaBunker in the old HLDM :(
and it lags a bit, not too much though
-Resistance: Now I didnt really get this map... I think it's size will be great for a few players, although I'd rather play steamlab If I want an evening map. The outdoor section was really nice although there was a lot of detail players wont be able to look at while in game ( like the first de_raincheck beta ;) )
-Powerhouse: now detail on this one was superb, as would be expected from the author of rapidcore, finaltube etc. It does look like it will lag in open spaces once the server gets a few players. On the other hand it reminded me of dm_asbestos from Unreal Tournament 2003, quite nice!

Someone who shares my views! Yay ;D!

I'm in pretty much full agreement. I thought Underpass had a cool outdoor area, but the entire map kind of made me go 'wtf ;x' - It's really cramped indoors, and I hit quite a few dead ends.

I didn't get Resistance, either - What's it supposed to be? I noticed the train outside, and the interior could lend itself to a trainstation but I didn't notice any distingushing features in it to tell me what it was other than 'generic HL2'. I noticed FPS lower than Petrol b8 in the interior too, and the windows in the screenshotted area have the sunset-y effect, but it's like dark outside :/?

Powerhouse is my fav of the lot. I think it should have won, aside from the ugly skybox (ewwwww pointy cliffs ;x) - It's a pity the crane thing doesn't move, though :(
