Does anyone know the standard heights and widht for a simple door? I always get the wrong scaling for them :/

yes. in source maps, there are textures which serve as measurements fro how big doors/railings/crates etc. I cant remember but I think doors a 54 or 56 wide, and 112 or 128 tall. try those, Ill be back with a definate answer soon.

Scale them to the dimensions of the texture. Texture dimensions are shown in the texture browser, and the dimensions of a brush selected or being created are shown at the bottom-left of the Hammer window.

The player is 72 units tall, an average ceiling is often 128 units heigh. I usually go for 96 units, because it's easy to create with a grid-size of 32 units.

Anyway, you can fit textures to surfaces when you need to, using the Texture Application, selecting the surface and pressing the Fit button (in said Texture App).

You could also check out Andy's tutorial about dimensions/scale here.

But no matter what you do, always compile often after you've butilt whatever, to make sure it "looks" right. However it will never be perfect, because there is no perfect corelation between real-woird scale and Half-Life scale :(
