How long do you think people will still play on and map for the HL1 engine?
Posted 18 years ago2006-01-13 07:26:20 UTC Post #157698
Till at least 2045..

or maybe 2009

Well the HL engine is truly awesome, it it's still played, modded and mapped for for 8 years.

I think that there will always be mappers for HL.
Later - it will just help new mappers understand the basics, before mapping for Source.

And maybe 7 years from now, people will still be mapping for Source (if it is upgraded once in a while, of course)

Well people still mod for DOOM 1! I'd say forever.. well until old games become incompatible with the new technology, like DOOM really - bitch wont work on my comp!

HL1 mapping is easy to learn and HL1 itself is easy to mod.
It won't die in a long time...

i moved on to sources VOWING not to map for the 'dated hl1' ever again. But alas i have returned, hl1 has appeal, it's easy as maddy said and full of possibility with little learning curve - its great!

I would consider mapping for Half life 1 but the editor is so much better with Source...Hammer 3.5 makes me want throw my PC out the window.

I have never mapped for Source (maybe one day) but for now I enjoy mapping for HL1, I found that Hammer will only stuff up because I made the error to start with lol, TWHL and the community have been a great help for a mapping N00b like myself, and for that reason I feel that HL1 is going to be around for a long time to come

I believe CS 1.6 is still being played more than CS:S. So yeah, HL1 is alive and well.

It will last virtually forever. I will be playing it when I am in my 70's. Perhaps I'll be mapping way into my 90's.

I'll be wearing adult nappy's at the age of 102 and still play CS 1.6 and condition zero..at least I wont need to leave the computer to go to the toilet...

i think that the situation will stay pretty much how it is now. games are becoming harder and more complicated to map... just look at the difference between hl and source, so therefore, it may get to a point where they don't release SDKs and source codes. then, mapping will cease. basically, its when they think it is too different for us!

old-skool game engines and concepts are really die-hard because people who want to make a game start with old skool stuff. i.e: I started with 8-bit rpg's, and in fact, i'm still working with it. But i've upgraded my life a bit since then. The main point is that the HL1 engine is considerably simpler than the HL2 engine. People will mod and map for this because it is simpler, less time consuming, and good quality really shows because of those who dare to NOT do the obvious, thus prompting more creativity to involve. That's why i choose to map HL1 still.

We  U HL1!

EDIT: I have yet to mod Duke Nukem 3D. :D

as long as CS 1.6 will last.

What?! hammer 4 is buggy and nasty and relies on steam which means its down every other week.

Sure, maybe when its finished completely, hammer 4 will be better, but right now, 3.5 pwns

Oh, and HL will not die until its uncompatable, and even then some die-hard mod-makers'll still use it.

Specially HL1's methods of terrain creation... and let's not forget the amazing portal leafs that HL1 creates in the VIS process. Now that's simpler!
I'm joking. Everything you could do with HL1, you can do in Source, with better compile times (func_detail anyone?) easy control of lightmap resolution (in the faces you specify) and other features. HL2 might look more time consuming, but try to do a City 17 map in HL1. Now THAT would be time consuming :D

The HL1 engine was way ahead of its time and is still very flexible. Sure, it lacks certain features like bump maping, but that doesnt mean you still cant make a map that looks awesome. And as for old games, people still play PacMan and Pong.

Pac man FTW!

Halflife 1 will last a long time. It's too awesome
Posted 18 years ago2006-01-13 18:22:17 UTC Post #157780
The Half Life engine is constantly being updated, and when its not people are constantly finding new effects you can generate with it. Its a much more powerful engine than most people assume so I say it will probably stay around as long as people are playing online games. And everyone knows that won't end any time soon.
I believe CS 1.6 is still being played more than CS:S
Last time I checked it was about a 4 to 1 ratio of players. Quite a superiority on 1.6's behalf if I do say so.
Posted 18 years ago2006-01-13 18:35:04 UTC Post #157782
CS 1.6 is a free internet download. Since CS:source only offers better graphics with the same gameplay style, I'm not surprised many people won't invest their money in the game.
CS 1.6 also happens to run fine in a much wider range of computers. Some people might own CS:source but dont have the hardware needed for a good fps rate. Other people might still play CS 1.6 because their friends dont have the Source version... As you see, there are many reasons to this.

HL will not die until its uncompatable, and even then some die-hard mod-makers'll still use it
And even after that, there will be software emulators so the engine can still run on far more advanced (but incompatible) machines.

Just look at those DOS games that are still being played by some die-hards.

people still play PacMan and Pong.
yeah, how much ?
that's not because a grandma played it once with her grandson the last year it is still "played" :| ...

Source is much better than Hammer 3.5 from many points of view, be the triggers system, the better lighting, the fact that you can map textures with lower scales (look more "realistic" ingame), that you can model rough/natural terrain that won't be infested by collision bugs, that models are better managed by the engine, and are better looking, etc, the only problem I know with source, is just it has been coded by pigs and drain all my computer memory, while I finished HL2 without a single slowdowns :| ...

Source could have been a good engine, but because of indredible hardware requirements, because hl2dm and css suck, and because of steam, I think there are other FPS maps editors that could be maybe at least as much interesting as source is (Quake4, UT etc) ...

Half life will last forever!!!!! well if we keep mapping/modding/playing it, it will. And plus people are making stuff to update it like detailed textures/extra models/better effects.

Seriously, Half Life is like some immortal beast. It will never die and if anything tries to kill it, it will just flick its finger and destroy the opposition.

Actually there is a bumpmap mod for hl which you can map for.

Expect it to be around for a long time.
Expect the major Mod's that came from HL to be around for a long time.

Satchmo is right, more people play 1.6 than CS:Source and more people play DoD 1.3 than DoD:Source....

If you are working on a project, keep going and do NOT rush.
The end of the world is a long way off.

HL1 will be here for good.

I pan to map until i go blind - and even then, nVidia will probably have something to connect my retinas to the 3dcard..

I wonder what resolution i could get with my eyes.. and refresh rates..

Nah, sony has a pantend for that.
I think half life will be around for a long time to come, half life was revolutionary. Not only that, but it's highly mod-able (is that even a word?) my estimation would be about 30 years before it really starts to die down.
