My first map that I actually wanted to be a map (not test maps I did to get into Hammer) was de_household. It was nice looking, but filled with mistakes up the ass! For some reason I carved and hollowed every brush! I carved everything!!! I skyboxed, I used prefabs from the internet, omg it is a disaster! Its sad because it looks great, but can never run. I will probably remake it in source, but way later...................... I cant believe the mistakes!!! How about you?

My first noob mistakes... its been so long I cant remember... probably making a door and setting it all up so it runs off a button, but then forgetting that you have to set the angle twice, so when the door opens it just moves half a foot back rather than up and you cant get through.

To much detail in my first map, hl engine couldnt handle it. I went over several limits r_speeds wasa one 6000 it was agood level that just did not make it out to fruition. All the teleports had the enterprise startrek energise sound and all the sounds i had made custom. I had made this freaking awesome jumpad in the gorge to get places, and a button to activate the song prayer by disturbed. it was really freaking cool, but there was to much of everything. I gave up after it said I was considerably over several limits, i think one was leaf portals. The limit is 64000 i was at 128 000 lol I ended up just deleting half the level and I have an old version of it on the hard drive .I might work on it again when i am more skilled

the name of it was pillarbox and at one time i had a version of it in the unfinished who knows maybe one of you out there has aversion they can send my way of it?lol

one good thing i did do was not carve or skybox
but after that the design was just not inclined for the hl engine. It would work better on the source

right now i have 3 maps coming out soon one is a nightmarebefore christmas level and another is a zelda theme and i have a killbill map that im working on as well

Im used to always skybox, also, finishing my first map and releasing it on the internet without any terrorist spawns.

making a glassmap where absolutly every brush in the map was breakable, as in with one shot EVERYTHING would go at once. :P

well, the usual of course... carving, and overclipping. also, i used point light entities all the time, far more adaptive, but look crap!

My very first map:
had intended leaks.
used decals to indicate lamps at the ceiling.
contained walls with the 'aaatrigger' texture.
Posted 18 years ago2006-02-03 18:23:12 UTC Post #161361
Meh. I tried texturing the walls with the decal applier. Hadn't discovered the texture application tool.
Posted 18 years ago2006-02-03 18:32:21 UTC Post #161368
Skybox, putting one-unit-thick walls on sides because I didn't know how about the texture application tool, carving with cylinders, the list goes on.

Thinking the func_wall needed to be applied to all the walls and floors you made.

OR i didnt know there were compilers, and getting pissed off cus i couldnt play my uber maps ;/

spending almost a year playing with hammer without having the compile tools set up.

that wasn't really a mistake though, I wasn't truely trying to map at the time
Posted 18 years ago2006-02-04 17:25:05 UTC Post #161476
So did I. I didn't know how to set the compiling. For a year I just mapped! Then suddnly I managed to compile it in the basic compiling mod without doing anything.

I can't remember my first mistakes so much.

What I do remember though, is that the first few months I didn't know how to compile my maps... all I did was creating buildings and stuff in Hammer and stare at it. Fun times. :)

meh, my first maps had loads of leaks be cause I thought that the black shit outside would turn in to a sky after compile (...what's a skybox?)
and then I got pissed and threw the map away.

I forgot to put a light in my first map and I was puzzled at why I coudnt see anything.
Posted 18 years ago2006-02-07 16:07:56 UTC Post #161971
I start to build in one of the Worldcrafts early version, and I find the Arch tools really nice and good, but I find also the Carve tools, and that combination thas not so good
I build big, huge pipes and I love to carve smaller pipes in the big, and it was not only one it was many
Just imagine the rest.
That map never get to compiling.

my first map was so pro :P

I had a cs map in hammer 3.4, cts spawned in a box with some glass shards you could break or just go around to get to the ladder and the end, you climbed it to another empty room with a vent and a ladder, climb into the vent and exit out the hole into another room with a door that opened and had the T spawn, the terrorists could of course shoot the cts as they came out of the vent but meh...

The hostages were in a glass box in the T spawn, the glass was unbreakable and there was a door with a button that could auto close, I kept getting stuck inside and there was no button to get out :P

Plus no nodes for the npcs to follow -_-
