Midi. That wonderful music from that blessed our old video games! I've recently "acquired" a whole bunch of arcade/old console/old pc midi music, but there is a problem...All the songs sound terrible! The new midi synth that comes with XP makes them sound so good as to be unrecognizable from the originals!

I've searched extensively for a way to change the xp synth to something more primitive, but with no luck. There's lots of webpages out there about midi and synthesizers, but I can find no way to modify XP's default Synth.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Ah I had this problem with FFVII, I installed the FFVII PC patch and it changed some of the core XP system files, ever sicne the music sounded so much better. Perhaps the patch did somthing like what you want?

I still have a relatively large collection of MIDI's from the 80's. I kept transferring them from one computer to the other.

I had them on my 286 initially in 1987. It took me years to collec them.

I've never played/listened to ff, but I upon your recomondations, I've downloaded all the FF7 discs, and will listen to them soon :)

Does anybody know how to change XP's synth so they sound vintage, though?

It might have to do with your soundcard. My laptop has only one default synth, but I can choose between three different ones in my desktop. I think one of them was the FFVII yahama synth.
As nostalgic as those FF midis do sound, nothing beats the symphonic orchestrated versions.

Dammit Pwned by my computer again :(

Oh well, My Monkey Island midis will have to do the way they are, or I can probably find recored .mp3s of them...

Another great thing about MIDI besides the small file size is how readily available they are... You can find them for almost anything, like:

This.

Dammit you pwned me!

I was just going to edit and say that :P

You're so right. Even if you know nothing about music, you can compose pretty much anything you want given a little time and patience.

FF8 soundtrack is accually better FYI.

and my Audigi 2 does a great job with some midi's, and yet others the instiments are all messed up.

use google for an old midi library and a midi player that can be told to use that library of midi voices to play midi files

maybe, but FF7 is better more in the ways of nostalgia and remembering all the good times.

I love Aerith's_theme. So soothing yet dramatic. Even in the low quality Playstation version.

Urb digs around for his FF7 disk

FOUND IT! I LOVE THIS GAME!

"Difficult to stand on both feet isn't it?" Ah that takes me back. lol.

Is this limited do FF?

If not, I've been lookin' for the voice clips from Duke Nukem 3D (The F-key phrases like 'It's time to kick ass and chew bubblegum...and I'm all out of gum' or 'What are you, some bottom-feeding, scum-sucking, alge-eater?'). So far, I've had no luck locating them. Can anyone help me?
