I was in my house recording sound FX over my small hand held radios for a game concept I am working on. I put one radio by the microphone of my computer and take the other into another room to record the sound.

One of the sounds I was recording was "All hands abandon ship, abandon ship." so I said this over my radio and THE FUCKING COAST GARUD ANSWERED!!!1

I am shitting myself, what if they launch a rescue party or somthing!! I didnt make out anything they said but I send a message a few moments later saying "Err, this is the person who sent the last transmission on this frequency, just to say there is no emergancy I am recording sound FX onto my computer, again there is no emergancy, sorry for the inconvienance."

WHAT THE FUUUUUUUCK!!! I am shitting myself now! What if they do lauch search parties!?

Save the frequency and prank call them, LAWLZ.

that's why you should invest in COOLEDIT like what i have. It pwns the soundage nasty. All of the radio effects are default so you don't have to prank the coastguard to get your radio sounds.

A lucky stumble, HAHA!

Crazy.

There've been a couple of instances of Freeview (UK non-subscription digital TV) decoder boxes broadcasting naval distress signals recently.

I'm sure they heard the second transmission, anyway. Are you sure it was the coastguard, and not just somebody else using the same CB frequency?

Yeah, and that happened in MY TOWN aswell, I doubt they will be to impressed with my stunt after that.

EDIT: heres the sound file I recorded, this is what my computer recorded from the transmission. http://www.websamba.com/tycell/Sinking.zip

I would like to understand: How could they "launch a rescue party" if they have no coordinates, nothing to know where to go and what to rescue? :| ...

It should do? :

J.C: When a womans TV Cable box screwed up they lauched boats all over the shop to try and find the source of the signal, they searched for hours before realising it was land based.

I DUN BELEEVE ET!
Funny story, but how could you possibly think that they would send a rescue party when you were in your house? On the ground...

The sound does work. Pretty noisy.

Because I live near the coast? They cant pin point the signal without it being on for a long time and without the proper equiptment setup. Think about it your sat in a control room and then on the radio you hear "All hands abandon ship, abandon ship!" What would you think?

They didnt have time to track the location of the signal, that would require at the very least triangulation and the radio only has a 3 km range. Not much chance of their being 3 recivers within 3km of each other.
Posted 18 years ago2006-02-16 21:05:24 UTC Post #163691
So, they now just started a full search operation near your coastline... probably using divers as no other signal was heard afterwards... :P

Dont say that man! lol

Nah nothing happened AFAIK. People dont usually shout "ABANDON SHIP!" over the radio. Plus chances are they got my second message.

Hmm, no sings of any radio interferance in the sound file.

You can pin point a transmission by meassuring its strength, if you cross-pin point this with 2 locators you have a pretty accurate search area for a last transmission of any vehicle.
Posted 18 years ago2006-02-19 17:58:40 UTC Post #163991
Yeah true, or triangulate my position. But they wont be able to "pin point" where I am. They could probably figure the area I live in but then, I didnt do anything wrong so I doubt they will bother.

If, what your saying is treu then you where doing something wrong, you where transmitting on a frquency without identifying yourself for a starter :)

No I wasnt doing anything wrong. These hand held radios come with 9 "channels" and I bought them in a local Computer Shop. They only have a 3 km radious (apx 1.8 miles), lots of people use them, its just that the coast gaurd monitor all frequencies and of course if somone starts saying stuff like that on them, they are bound to respond.

Luke: Its not big and its not clever.
Posted 18 years ago2006-02-20 17:53:39 UTC Post #164131
Offcourse they wouldnt monitor those frequency's since all those out of the box thingies are on the same line, any accident at sea would be transmitted on a high frequency bandwidth, probably one that every shipper knows.

The last walkie-talkies I had were higher quality ones, they ran about $30/apiece, and they used cb channel 14. But I'm guessing that the coast guard wouldn't use that channel.

Funny stuff! Lucky you weren't recording "bomb activated" or something, you'd end up in Guantanamo Bay!
