I have decided to make a small upgrade in my computer. I need to replace my Geforce4 Ti 4200 with an AGP (I dont have PCI-express) GFX card that supports HDR. The prices for these are actually very cheap imo. I dont really want to spend too much money on it since I am planning on getting a new motherboard (with PCI express) in a couple of years.
These are the available models:I'm a bit confused since some 256 MB cards are cheaper than others with 128 MB... My idea is getting an X1300, 6600 GT or 6200. They all include Shader Model 3.0 and HDR...

FWIW, I have a couple of the ATI Radeons (a 9600 and an X800, both with 256Mb RAM) and they perform beautifully. A friend of mine has a 9550 (with 128Mb, I think) which also performs quite well.
That probably didn't help much, and I really can't say anything about the Nvidia cards...

firstly, DONT GET A 6200!!! they really REALLY suck!!
5200 doesnt support hdr
i have a 6600gt and it works awsomely (bf2 @ high quality 1280x1024)
and hl2 full hdr, water reflections, etc. 1024x768
nowadays, 6600gt is considered one of the lowest dx9 standard
ati might play hl2 ever-so-slightly better, but the 6600gt is better overall.
get a 6600gt.

I have a 9800Pro and it performs very well. But out of those cards, I'd go with the 6600gt

I checked the 6600gt description and it says it comes with dual DVI output but it doesnt mention VGA. Are there actually 3D cards with no VGA support? It doesn't have Video-Out feature either... I'll have to investigate a bit more before choosing...

all omni-DVI output cards come with DVI to VGA converters. some sort of unspoken standard of the industry.
I have a 6200 and it works fine. although I OC'd it about 9% so it can compete with a 6600

Naah, those extra 128MBs of memory don't boost up the card much. Just get Leadtek A6600GT, it OC's nicely.
Btw, you could get 6800GS for about 250$.

Does anyone know how do the geforce6 compare to the geforce4 series? I am rethinking my purchase, given the fact that my monitor limits me to a horrible 40 fps @1024x768.
Besides the pixel shaders and HDR effects, how much better would performance be like? I fixed my computer today and took a stroll around some of my maps: besides "Kaufmann House", the rest had pretty good framerates. I dont know if it's worth it.

Why not a 6800? They aren't really more expensive than the 6600GT. I got mine cheaper than that 6600GT on the list...

Get the G-force 6800 256 DDR. Its about 250 or 200 I forget, but It runs FEAR, DOOM, HL2, and BF2 on Max! No chug or problems, as long as your CPU is satifactory and a sufficent amount of mem. HDR recommends a GIG of memory I believe....Also, get a new motherboard. A PCX 16x compatible is only like 130-170 and well worth it. AGP is just bad. I would recommend not getting an AGP card. I would save for the new motherboard, and the new card. Just because AGP is soooo slow at accessing the memory!

The TI4200 is actually a relatively decent card - better than the 6200 performancewise. However it does lack HDR capabilities.
If you want a good bargain AGP card, try a 9600XT. You can get a new one for about US $80. Although its only SM2.0b, it will still support HDR. I have one myself, and it runs HL2 on high settings with 2X AA and CS:S with everything maxed out.

The big question now is, will I notice increased performance (besides HDR and maybe anti-aliasing) if I'm using a monitor with 25 ms response time (40 frames per second max) and 1024x768?? As HrnyGoat said, my Geforce4 performs quite well even though its more than 4 years old. It only slows down if I'm using AA, or in certain areas of de_inferno source, and some of the city levels of F.E.A.R.
Quake4, Doom3, CoD2... all those games or demos run pretty decently, or at least my monitor doesnt really allow more than that.

HDR is nescessary if ur a source mapper - otherwise you cant test it! lol. get a good card so when/if you get a new monitor it'll be good.

Sounds reasonable. But the upgrade will have to wait. Until then, my source maps (like my previous 8) will not have HDR. I hope noone discards them because of that. I've seen 10 years worth of 3D games with no HDR and waiting a bit more wont hurt

I had a CRT monitor in the basement until not so long ago. But it's out of the question. I need a lot of space in my desk to do university homework. CRT monitors also get my eyes tired and watery much sooner than TFT. And as you can guess, I am one of those people who need to be glued to the screen both for fun and for work...
