Imagination, etc. All the obvious stuff that makes up all mapping.

Posted 18 years ago2006-04-14 13:07:27 UTC Post #174294
In the past 2 competitions I proposed, people complained that the theme was too complicated and there was too much to do. This is quite a simple and easy competition. I could think of many ways to change the map according to the rules that would make it almost impossible to recognize. Saying that the map cuts down your freedom or imagination is false, it just sounds like an excuse...
Give us liberty to do everything in the inside with the same layout
That's the whole idea...
why do you give us base maps? It's not a mapping compo, it's an editing compo
Isn't mapping the same as editing? You create, change, texture and move brushes around, and you place entities and change their properties.
I get the feeling that few people here map for fun. If you want to create your ultra cool layout and map, go ahead. But to get this trophy, you have to be better than the rest doing the same thing. That's what competitions are usually about :)
If anyone has serious doubts on what you can/can't do, but wants to keep it secret, send a private message.

Well I'll ask my question which I think you sort of answered up there but I just want to be entirely sure - I can move/delete pre-existing brushes and add new ones, so long as the layout's the same?

Yeah, but... not too much.

By giving as already made artitecture isn't the thing I ment, it limits you.

Elon, when you put your back into it and win another gold trophy, you can make a better compo, okay? Kasperg earned the right to submit his compo idea, and frankly, i think its great. stop whining, start mapping

Well said Kasperg, Hunter. :)

I like base maps, as long as there limited to 1 room, just having 4 rooms not including hallways, well, my compo may lag a bit..lets just leave it at that, hope thats alright. lol
:D
But hey, I love base maps, there fun as hell. :)

High r_speeds are OK with me, as long as there are no errors running the map.
Dr. Mapper has to decide the theme for the next Source competition.
By giving as already made artitecture isn't the thing I ment, it limits you
Let's see who can make the best with those limits then :)
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-15 15:40:38 UTC Post #174499
I think those who think they are that limited is because they have a limited imagination. I started mapping the moment the compo opened, and quite frankly, I don't feel limited whatsoever. The only thing I can't do is change the layout, or structure.. and so far it's looking amazing. Although it lags a bit, because of the sparks, and other sprites I'm using, and the amount of detail.. I'm hoping to familiarize myself with the hint brush. :)

my PC really lags when I play this map for some reason.
Only when I'm in the start position, and looking down the tunnel, to the doorway.
Can anyone explain ? I haven't changed the map in any way.
Does it really matter if it only happens there? You can still edit it.
Guess not, but I thought my file might be corrupt or something, since nothing else ever lags on my PC,
so I don't want to send in a corrupt compo entry.
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-16 16:25:57 UTC Post #174654
You're basically just stuck with the underground base theme...
Fie! I'm remaking the theme entirely, with good progress.
It's nice to see how another mapper works... I must say, the basemap is quite... messy. Overlapping brushes, unnecesary brushes, stretched textures...
But it looks good, I must admit.
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-16 18:27:07 UTC Post #174670
Excellent stuff, ZL. I trust you'll serve as a role model for other, less imaginative mappers. Finish the map, though, or I'll turn you into a lady.

I didnt notice the map had some errors. It compiled perfectly last time I saved it. It's a good thing we play BSPs instead of RMFs!
Who knows what horrible issues the rest of my RMFs might have...
I usually don't dedicate much time to optimize brushwork or even texturing, while theme, lighting, layout and gameflow are usually my priorities.
I'll try to be more careful if I ever have to make a base map again.
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-16 20:10:44 UTC Post #174684
Well, Gameflow is going to be a problem for me, with the amount of detail, my entry will lag like crazy, I suggested a few level changes, but was turned down. :( So, right now, I can't have any explosions in case of it freezing up. :

I changed the theme rntierly. Can I remove the pipes and ventelation... they wont fit in my map.
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-16 20:47:03 UTC Post #174687
You can remove them if you want to, but I wouldn't. They were there for a reason. I don't know why people complicate themselves so much. The map is full of hints and things that are breakable etc. If three people manage to do a great map using the pipes and get the trophies, don't you start complaining ;)
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-16 21:09:22 UTC Post #174689
I understand but the place I'm building isn't new, infact it's really old, and I mean about 2 thousand years old.
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-16 21:31:53 UTC Post #174690
Kasperg: I have to stress the importance of optimisation. Overlapping brushes are pretty much death in any map because they cause CSG to go berserk, which equals longer compile times, which equals laggier map.
AJ AJGlorious Overlord
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-16 22:21:27 UTC Post #174694
I am well aware of that, but the overlaps in this RMF are minimal. In fact, some people are thinking that some of those brushes are overlapping, but they are actually func_walls, and they don't interfere with world brushes.
I've never had any problems with compile times in any HL map, and longer compile times don't mean laggier maps. The final BSP faces will be the same, but the process needed to decide those faces is longer.

Kasperg: Dunno about that, there's a few...

Even though some may be func_walled, it's still good practice to work as if they aren't. :)

Been a while since I messed with Wally. Not sure if my idea will be impressive, but it's looking cute so far.

Actually, they probably can... I mean, we're quite far behind on winners' compos, aren't we?

The next compo will be a source one, and i'm pretty sure there is somebody still to choose that idea..

It'll be a couple of compos before the winner of this one gets to choose, won't it?

Well, we wont. But I dont know about you.And Throstur is sorta new to compos so take it easy.
About the compo:
Do we have to make the player move around? or can we use trigger_camera?

You can do whichever.

Posted 18 years ago2006-04-18 09:25:43 UTC Post #174939
so, that means, I'll have to wait a month, for another compo. Why did HL2 have to come out with such wicked graphics. Why can't my PC handle... just why..

I SAY 2 COMPOS AT ONCE! : or at least start the HL2 one 2 weeks after the HL1. (Which would be next week)

This way a new halflife 1 compo can start 2 weeks after it is closed.
(HL2, and HL1 Closing would close on the same date)
(Giving judges 2 weeks to judge and come up with the results.)
