Im ignoring the fanboy comments and comparisons to CS:S, but its starting to feel like a slippery slope from what was my lovely leftist dream where licensing law doesnt exist and artists create content for free because they like creating the content/art. In many ways the modding community used to have that free reign, when you throw licensing and money into the situation everything becomes a beaureacratic mess. Lets all start charging ?1 for downloading our maps yay.

This was bound to happen, when somthing gets as sucessful as that the creator is of course going to make money on it.

Garrys mod, although fun, is pretty boring IMO. After you have built yourself a large fort out of cargo containers and fixed it all over with balloons and thrusters once you dont usually bother doing it again... damn that was fun though, especially when I fitted thrusters facing up and used it somewhat like a giant hammer to crush people below Bahahaha.

Still, after a while it gets boring.

i'm not concerned at all about this. For one, it was bound to happen eventually, and 2, Garry's mod, that until recently was totally free is a good deal better than a lot of game released into the market... It also give users the ability to create their own games...

Its worth paying for, so stop whining

I never played Garry's mod. I was about to download it, but now I have to pay? Even though its only ten dollars US, it doesnt seem worth it. IS it? Cant really say since I never played it.

WHat this does do is give hope to 3rd party modders everywhere. I do hope though Fortress Forever doesnt do this.............

Sneaky bastards.

Maybe if you change the name of the mod? ??

oh yeah, ff, that great piece of vapourware
its a shame that this had to happen, Im only a few months old to the gmod community so I didn't know just how into disrepair it had gone, unfortunately the community im a part of just spent a load of money buying up new servers, which kind of ties us into paying anyway. I wonder if GSPs will have to fork out some dosh too.

Good for him.

If I had come up with an original idea and it became such a phenomenon, I would try to find a way to profit from it too.

It's all in the capitalistic spirit.

Yes, it's based on greed, but this system is heck a lot better than communism.

No fool would work for the greater good without getting compensated fairly for it. That's why communism only works in theory. It's against human nature.

I have that opinion about work, but this is art, there is a massive difference to me. As fun as it would be to make money doing something I love, even if it were possible I just couldnt charge people for what I make (no snide comments please), even if Ive put 7 months effort into it.

If all goes downhill with GMod you can all play Blockland: http://www.blockland.us

I'd really have to disagree with this. If I had invented something as brilliant as Garrys Mod, then I wouldn't suddenly ask people to buy it, especially after nine successful versions. I'm sure I have the same reaction as the fans of CS when they found out that it was going retail.

Sure, get it distributed via Steam, but make it free. I sure ain't paying for it.

So painters, singers, and film producers should not get paid for making art? They already enjoy what they do, so why should they get paid at all?

When you offer something for free for a long time and then decide to charge for the very thing that you had made free: not a good thing.

i really think that valve should let free 3rd party mods available through steam. i read somewhere there is a p2p file system embedded in one of the steam .dll's - this could be for 3rd party mod sharing in the future, but i want it now! lol.

Agreed with ZL.
Developing such a great mod, like Garry's takes a lot of time and dedication. And I think, that for his effort, he deserves those 10$.
Besides - most of you would have done the same.

and when they are you introduce licensing and it all becomes a huge mess, obviously they have to make a living but you have to admit the music and film industries have turned shite in recent times all because of pursuit of profit over actual art (god that sounds socialist)

Personally I believe that the majority of people on here would rather people wanted to play their maps or view their 'art' rather than making money off of it. Thinking about it the whole 'this was necessary' argument doesnt even make sense, how come so many other mods have managed it despite their popularity.

But do you think that they would say "Hell no!" if Valve offered money for their maps?

I do agree that there is a great sense of satisfaction when other people play your maps. That's why most of us map. But if a gaming company approached you and offer you a job, would you refuse in the name of "making art"?

honestly I would prolly say yes because im desperate for a job, I would take a job offer from EA at the moment. I havent gone as far as applying for the atomic weapons establishment yet though.

Making maps for a gaming company is a little different than selling that which you have already made to a gaming company, if someone offered money for my back catalogue of maps I'd tell them to F.O.
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-15 08:37:13 UTC Post #174442
People pay 'Mappers' to make clan maps for them and when I read a topic on this I found out that a guy got paid 20 pounds to make a clan map. So I thought it must be good then and I take a look...But oh dear to my disgust it was a box with a sky and a few props...You could make it in 10 minutes max and it took him a few days...

Satchmo, didn't you say you or someone else was being paid to make a map in a thread somewhere?

Lol, I quote Garry from his own forums under the thread;

"Garry's Mod going retail"

Here is the quote, "Enough bitching.".

Man, what a asshole. If I ever had a famous mod I wouldn't sell it to a company that doesn't really about the future of said mod and would rather have the pleasant feeling of the money rolling in...It's just...meh.
