Ok thought I would start a thread that tests peoples IQ.

Here is one that I like.

Count every " F " in the following text:

FINISHED FILES ARE THE RE
SULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTI
FIC STUDY COMBINED WITH
THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS...

If you get 3 you are considered normal.
If you get 4 it is rare
If you get all 6 you are a genius

Six.

I think there has to be some qualification of speed, or something.

Ok here is another, lets call this question 2, I will give the answer after 3 attempts to solve it.

1. There is a man who lives on the top floor of a very
tall building. Everyday he gets the elevator down to the
ground floor to leave the building to go to work.Upon
returning from work though, he can only travel half way
up in the lift and has to walk the rest of the way
unless it's raining! Why?

(This is probably the best known and most celebrated of
all lateral thinking puzzles. It is a true classic.
Although there are many possible solutions which fit the
initial conditions, only the canonical answer is truly
satisfying. )
Posted 18 years ago2006-07-24 14:19:53 UTC Post #191470
The version I remember is that the man is too short to press the top floor button, just the halfway button. Thats why he can make it all the way down, but halfway up. That rain part has me stumped though.
Posted 18 years ago2006-07-24 14:19:59 UTC Post #191471
he travels half-way down the building using the stairs because the elevator only goes half way up then he takes the elevator the rest of the way. when he comes back he has to do the opposite..

dont get the raining bit, though..

RotatorSplint came close to the answer, so now I will reveal the Rain part of the question.

1. The man is very, very short and can only reach
halfway up the elevator buttons. However,if it is
raining then he will have his umbrella with him and can
press the higher buttons with it.

Question 3.

A man and his son are in a car accident. The father
dies on the scene,
but the child is rushed to the hospital. When he arrives
the surgeon says,

"I can't operate on this boy, he is my son! " How can
this be?
Posted 18 years ago2006-07-24 14:52:54 UTC Post #191479
the surgeon is a priest?

Correct G_KID.

Question 4.

A man is wearing black. Black shoes, socks, trousers,
jumper, gloves and

balaclava. He is walking down a black street with all
the street lamps off.

A black car is coming towards him with its light off but
somehow manages to

stop in time. How did the driver see the man?
Posted 18 years ago2006-07-24 16:41:55 UTC Post #191510
because the sun was givin' light out there

Correct painkiller

It was day time

Question 5.

Why is it better to have round manhole covers than
square ones?

This is logical rather than lateral, but it is a good puzzle
that can be solved by lateral thinking techniques.
It is supposedly used by a very well-known software company as an interview question for prospective employees.
Posted 18 years ago2006-07-24 17:05:46 UTC Post #191516
Can't drop it down the hole.
Posted 18 years ago2006-07-24 17:08:59 UTC Post #191520
mmmmmmmmm

i think the round one cannot be dropped by accident and the square yes.
Posted 18 years ago2006-07-24 17:18:08 UTC Post #191525
Yeah, there's no way to get a circular lid through a smaller circular hole, but if you position the square one correctly, you can fit it through diagonally

whee i get a silver star :P
Posted 18 years ago2006-07-24 18:06:49 UTC Post #191540
Errr, nope. That's actually wrong, if the square is larger than the man-hole itself, there is no-way it can get through. I've literally tried this myself :P

[Edit] Provided both are squares, that is.

Question 6

Think of words ending in -GRY. Angry and hungry are two of them. There are only three words in the English language. What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is.

Never in a month of sundays.

Question 5 = A square manhole cover can be turned and dropped down
the diagonal of the manhole. A round manhole cannot be
dropped down the manhole. So for safety and
practicality, all manhole covers should be round.

Question 9.
A man went to a party and drank some of the punch. He then left early.
Everyone else at the party who drank the punch subsequently died of
poisoning. Why did the man not die?
Posted 18 years ago2006-07-25 06:55:11 UTC Post #191600
Someone poisoned the punch after he left.

@ Chickenfist..No
Posted 18 years ago2006-07-25 07:04:31 UTC Post #191602
The man put poison in the punch.
Posted 18 years ago2006-07-25 07:56:21 UTC Post #191607
the man is a venomous toad of some kind and merely drinking the punch turned it poisonous
Posted 18 years ago2006-07-25 08:10:15 UTC Post #191608
LeFtY wants Jobabob's Drug bag. When they say "think outside the square"...Jobabob is too far out.

Answer to Question 9 = The poison in the punch came from the ice cubes. When the man drank the punch, the ice was fully frozen.
Gradually it melted, poisoning the punch.

Question 10.
A man walks into a bar and asks the barman for a glass of water.
The barman pulls out a gun and points it at the man. The man says 'Thank you' and walks out.

(This puzzle claims to be the best of the genre. It is simple in its statement, absolutely baffling and yet with a completely satisfying solution. Most people struggle very hard to solve this one yet they like the answer when they hear it or have the satisfaction of
figuring it out. )
