Well because the HL Advanced Brushwork Minicompo idea was so successul, and because im a jealous bastard (I dont have HL) I think we should make a Source version of that thread.

If we were to run it, then the setup should be the same: 5 day max compo time, voted compo ideas, voted judges, etc.

Hopefuly us Source mappers can show those HL1ers whose boss! :badass:

The whole point of the "advanced brushwork" mini compo was that it's hard to create good looking brushwork in hl1. It's easy in source so the challenge is gone.

What are you talking about? Brushes are made the same way in HL as they are in Source, That and more detailed textures are the only differences.

Look at the compos in the HL version of this thread: build a toilet? Thats equaly as hard in Source: the only difference is the increace in quality of the textures.

You also forget that there are also people in this world who dont posses a copy of HL1, such as me. There's nothing wrong with this idea.

You guys told me to start a thread, so here it is.

this should be source-specific, for example, do something tricky with displacements, etc.

the whole point of the advanced brushwork compos were for the people with HL1 mapping talent to still have a competition to enter while the source competition is running.

And I'm far too busy with other competitions so although this is a nice idea I think we should leave it to the HL'ers.

Just enter the real source compo that's going on now anyway.

There are 4 days left

And a Source compo comes along almost never.

Don't cry splint, people don't like your idea now, when a source compo is running. In a week they'll be crying for a minicompo.

Thats partly why i started this - Because there are almost no Source compos, it would be nice to be entertained for a little bit. I guess I'll take your word for it though..

I agree with Elon. Why not have mini compos for Source?

I know Source is model-intensive, and may not have as much of a call for fancy brushwork, but I don't see how it could hurt--practicing your skills, until the next full compo.

You learn something with every map you make--even with the minicompos--, and not just about brushwork. Each time, you get a little better/effiicient with Hammer, learn little tricks about lining up textures, and how to get the most out of your lighting.

I don't see how any of this wouldn't apply to Source for minicompos!

Exactly. Thats the point I was trying to prove. Even if it's not with brushwork, I could make a thread simply put as "Source Mini Compos" or somthing to that effect.

I've lost my inspiration for the map I'm currently making and am bored out of my skull. I just want to do somthing, and I'm glad to see some people support my idea.

Get HL1 and join the darkside...it's nicer over here! :badass:

I'm really actually thinking about that... but I'm not simply going to drop source immediately. I like mapping for it, and I'm going to re-open this idea when the Source Compo is over.

No don't! I used to map for HL1 and then moved to Source...One day I felt like trying to map for HL1 again and I just can't...Valve updated Hammer with so many easy things like for instance you don't have to keep selecting a brush once in texture mode...Little things like this got me and also you're restricted to map size and detail which I'm not used to anymore in Source...Maps can be pretty huge now.

Except 4 takes like 100 mb memory when you run it and crashes when it feels like it.

saved my goddam life a few safety-switch-going-off-for-no-reason's!
i just wish more programs had autosaves!

Hammer 4 has been superbly stable for me. As for memory usage, if I could map on my shitty desktop PC, then you have no excuse!

Can you make hl1 maps in hammer 4?
