Some of you may already know this but VALVe purposely crippled the performance on nVidia FX series graphics cards in HL2 for the sake of their affiliation with ATi. That's right, they didn't optimize the performance on ATi cards, instead, they made it so that nVidia FX cards would have a tough time running the game. That's just scummy if you ask me. Anyway, visit http://www.tweakguides.com/HL2_10.html to find out how you can boost your performance if you have a nVidia FX card. People with 6600 and 6800 series cards are not affected by this so don't bother.

wewt upgrades ftw!

well hl2 was sponsored by ati so i spose they used ati cards...i dont think that they would do that on purpose, they just didnt optimize for nvidia...
or maybe its bcus the FX series suck?

hah.... good thing I have an ATI card - but games always do that anyway - FarCry, Age of Empires,......... I could go on forever, and most of those favour Nvidia.

Meh........ as long as it runs on my comp, a few frames lost here and there doesn't bother me.

They didn't optimize anything. They programmed the shaders n such to make nVidia FX cards sluggish. The didn't even really favor ATi. I don't really care cuz i got myself a nVidia 6800GT that runs HL2 flawlessly. I just wanted to post this because i found it "interesting."

Uh, proof, Headcrab Killa?
I seriously doubt valve would intentionally cripple performances on a specific series of cards, as that does nothing but hurt their reputation, disappoint their fans and probably causes some legal problems. It just seems quite unlikely - ATi doesn't even gain anything on it, it's not like people with FX cards will go "Oh my, I better get an ATi card 'cause HL2 will run better".

I call that you cant tell either way, however im more inclined to think its lazy programming than another flipping conspiracy

This worries me. The two laptops I'm looking at getting use the nVidia Geforce GO 7900 GTX 512MB card (17" = 1, 19" = 2 in SLi  ). Am I going to have problems? Why must we be forced to choose? Oh, cruel world...make a fucking level playing field!

I wouldn't blame anyone on some screw ups based on graphics cards. The game was probably made with ATI cards, and I believe it said somewhere that HL2 runs best on ATI, but you can't make such a blatant assumption based on the simple fact of conflicting card specs.

Valve should have detected such a problem while testing, if they didn't, then they suck at testing. But i have no doubt in my mind that they could be lazy, so meh. whatever.

Please note that despite ATI claiming to beat Nvidia in Half Life 2 (or vice versa), your actual results in Half Life 2 are dependent on the age and model of your graphics card, and the speed of your CPU rather than the brand of the card. The ATI logo on the Half Life 2 Retail box means nothing at all, just like the "Nvidia the Way It's Meant To Be Played" logo at the start of games is no guarantee that an Nvidia card will perform better. Refer to the articles listed in the Graphics Card & CPU entry under the Troubleshooting section for benchmarks which show you the way specific cards perform in Half Life 2.
That's all I see ATI vs. nVidia-wise on that page.

uhh, no, you are dead wrong.

My 6200 runs HL2 on high just fine.

If anything, it crippled the 6800, cus alls i heard from people who own them is problems in HL2.

The 6200 isnt an FX dumbass and my 6800 runs HL2 at all high settings without a problem.

lol, I have to agree with Headcrab, my bro has 6800 and runs it just fine, although there is some texture lines or something in css (little lines between textures I think?)
