I thought I'd make a thread for this instead of posting in the old ones. I had previously made a wallpaper of D0g vs. a Strider from the video on ign.com, but as mentioned by at least one, and admitted by me, the quality wasn't that great. So, for everyone here, I've created a hi-rez version of the background using the trailer released over Steam. As before, I made a fullscreen (4:3) and a widescreen (16:10*) version. Check the sizes in the thumbnail image**.

  • 16:10 is the aspect ratio for widescreen displays. 16:9 is for TVs.
    • The links are to the image itself, not the php. Also, I made them PNGs to preserve the hi quality.

Oh wait, I see now that the smaller one is 4:3. In any case, too small for wallpapering.

I finally watched the video, its very well done but that scene would work in a MOVIE, itd be so easily overlooked in a first person only game.

Actually, on that matter, why is the camera NOT in first person there?? Please dont tell me Valve are doing cutscenes now, the fanboys will go mentalist!

(or more accurately they will just cream themselves lapping up direct fan service)

We had cutscenes in HL right?

No, we did'nt. None of the HL games have cutscenes.

its one of the famous points about the halflife 'style', everything is told in the first person from gordons perspective, albiet it can lend itself to shoddy storytelling as its hard to get the message across, but it immerses you in the game more

Thanx for all the praise guys. And ZL, I've got a 17" moniter at 1280x1024 and it looks fine for me. I can see about turning it into a vector map, scaling it up, and then turning it back to a bitmap. That would keep the quality, but at a larger size. I'll see what I could do for the anal, perfectionist out there that like their backgrounds to not have the slightest bit of pixelation ;).

I say that 'cuz w/ the exception of graphic artists, most people don't notice a drop in quality if a picture is scaled 20-30%.

I need to correct you. HL1 did have a cut scene.

After you made it through most of "Surface Tension" and battled with the nimble girl Black Ops, you're knocked unconscious and briefly found yourself on a stretcher of some sort.

That, my friend, was a cut scene. :quizzical:

Yes, but everything was still seen from the point of view of the player. The only difference in that part of "Apprehension" was that you werent controlling Gordon's movements.

you muppet satchmo, I obviously meant only those in the third person, not 'a scene where the user is not in control'

btw its not a stretcher, you're just being dragged along the ground, as seen in blue shift
