Okie dokie folks!

As we all know, talk of TWHL3 has been floating around for a long, long while now. As a few of you know, a very very early version of TWHL3 exists, which you have been able to run through. This particular version was, of course, constructed by Alex.

However, Alex's commitments to University, plus his stance on waiting until IE7 is more widespread has prevented the further development of TWHL3. I've decided that this isn't acceptable considering that we've been using this version of TWHL for a good many years now and we are in dire need of an update to many areas of the site. As such, I'm throwing open the door to any and all talented PHP coders out there for you to come along and assist me in the completion of TWHL3. Keep in mind that his is a mammoth task, so true dedication is needed here, as well as fairly advanced knowledge of PHP. I have some very clear ideas as to where I want TWHL3 to go, which will of course be supported by as many ideas from the TWHL3 thread that we deem to be good/helpful enough to be included in the site.

You will be working with me (I don't know PHP myself, but I shall be overseeing the look of the site, as well as the implementation of features and the general functionality of the new site) and some other TWHL members. Should the workload become too overbearing, we may take on-board more than one coder. From my current viewpoint, it seems like this'll be the case.

It is time to bring TWHL back to its prime: as a site that's helpful to any and all who decide to come and stay. If you're interested, please PM me. You'll need to include examples of the work you've done, as well as display and aptitude for the work as well as assurance that you'll be dedicated and have the abilities to work in a team and take constructive criticsm. You will be working off the existing TWHL code, the current TWHL3 code and a temporary version of the TWHL database. If you are selected for the task, more information will be granted to you should you require it.

So, that's it. Good luck fellows!

No pay. Slave labour, and boy I'll be whippin' you hard!

As of this current moment, TWHL3 isn't online, but that should change in a few days.

I'd be more than happy to help, I can't exactly give you PHP Zen Engineer quality coding but I could help a lil' around that part and I guess any other part that you feel I'm qualified for. I'm here to be used :P

I'd definately be happy to help with some of the visual side of it, if you need that sort of thing.

/me nominates ZombieLoffe to be forced to do it, whether he wants to or not. Threaten him with his children's lives.

Only because he did a spanking fantastic job on my site in under 1 day. Imagine what he could do if he spends time on a site! :o

I've already rounded up a few people from #twhl, including ZombieLoffe. He and I will be overseeing the general look of the site, which, of course, includes the updating of the current TWHL theme. As such, we've got enough people working on the visual aspects.

I heard that some guy who worked for PHP development left the team because he said that PHP is terrible. (Safety issues and whatnot), is it wise to be making it in PHP? I know the current code is in PHP, but from what I've heard from rumors PHP isn't terribly good?

I've heard bad things about PHP and even worse about ASP, but then again, I'm no programmer, so I really have no clue.
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-03 12:25:55 UTC Post #208435
It all depends on how the server is configured, php can have some holes in the programming, but if you program it correctly its perfectly secure, look at all the applications that have been programmed in PHP (Invision Powerboard for one).
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-03 13:23:00 UTC Post #208436
ASP and PHP both rock and suck, depending on what you're using them for. For a simple and easy to expand forum and help site like this, PHP definitely takes the lead. ASP is more useful for online shops, things that will not necessarily expand in terms of content and general feel whereas from what's been discussed about TWHL3, we'll definitely want future expansion to be fairly easy.

Anyway, there isn't a whole lot of choice. :P Alex has already done a lot of the site and I suspect we will be utilising all if not most of his code, written in PHP.
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-03 14:02:50 UTC Post #208442
Well, I can't exactly link you to any PHP stuff I've done, seeing as how I have no server to host it. :

There is no question as to what language TWHL3 is written in, especially as the basics of it are already written.

Also, I should be poking my nose in from time to time, and doing some coding myself.

Ok, an update.

I currently have the code that Alex had done on TWHL3 to this point. What we don't have at the moment is a place to host it that can handle a SQL database. Afaik, Alex is sorting that out at the moment, so we'll wait and see what's going on. If he fails to make anything happen, we'll have to look for alternate means.

Main point is, we have the code.

Luke: Thanks for the offer, but Alex has sorted out the hosting, so TWHL3 is currently up and running.

Elof, Strideh and I are going to be working on the design soon. Here's a very very quick mockup for the design of the news posts (which'll be without that avatar image btw).

Edit: And from that mockup comes this (thankyou Strider!).

We're already finding problems with IE7's rendering of our test page. Don't blame our code either - it's coming up as it should in both Opera and FireFox.

Well, playing around with the colour scheme is on the to-do list. I'm pretty sure the goal here is to make is seem neater and more modern without making it too unfamiliar to everyone. Right now, the layout is top priority though, colour theming is something for later.

I don't know what's going on in Ant's and ZL's minds on this matter but i'd personally like to see less of the horrid brownish orange colours you see in the news headers and such.
