Here it is, the thread to solve everyones problems with meandering thread topics arising (possibly) unintentionally from the doings of... Certain members. Please, feel free to direct all your woes regarding huge image sizes on the internet into this controlled environment.

You are also permitted to discuss the ins and outs of these unjustly large images, and try and coerce your fellow mappers into siding with you. Maybe by the time this thread is closed, we'll all be one happy bunch who'll accept other's opinions about what's a good standard for the webs, and maybe even agree about them, but somehow I doubt it.

Have fun!

PNG is usually a bad thing though.. make sure the picture has lots of white in it. PNG with lots of detail = 56k death.

I say you should allow tiff files, they are the best. They look better and they can be animated too.

I was going to post a 5.72 meg BMP image, but I couldn't be arsed, so you'll just have to imagine it.

perchance you could word your responses better for the commoners vocabulary. Your posts are a wee bit to long to be fully comprehended. maybe break it up with bullets. that always helps and is good for quick reference.

On topic.
For me it's not such a big deal. I remember waiting for half and hour for some image to load back in 94 with a 14.4 K modem. Fortunately times have changed.

Some people waste more time arguing about the image size than waiting for those extra Ks to load. That's a fact.

But that doesn't mean people should make screenshots with huge resolutions. Nobody needs that, specially if the map depicted is ugly!! Sometimes people just do it to show the world that they can run the game with high resolution. Good for you, but the rest don't care.

There must be a hundred versions of English, just in the United States alone.
They're called dialects. The language is called English. American is a dialect of English.

We get the point. Uncompressed JPEGs = bad. Stop going on about it, jeez. The people who still post huge screens are the same people who ignore these threads... id est, you're preaching to the choir.
And no, there won't be any utterly useless features in twhl3.

Yes, it does.
Most languages do.

Orph, if the people who post these "huge" (ZOMG 150KB!!111) images will never change their ways (you admitted it yourself), why do you even bother? Why can't you just keep it in here, and stop derailing every other thread with your redundant drivel? You acknowledge that you aren't making any difference, yet you fail to heed your own words, and continue to derail topics/annoy people in other threads, when it could all be contained into one easily avoidable space.

Now, although I have no authority here whatsoever, I propose that all future discussion regarding image size that is doing little but drive topics off course be rounded up and dumped here to fester. Who's with me? :)

If what I type bothers you, either JOIN ME and end the problem by a united teamwork, or deal with it because I am annoyed
But it isn't going to end, and you said it yourself (unless, GASP, you're wrong). Nothing is going to end because a couple of people get together and start getting on everybody else's nerves. I don't know about you, but I'm not planning on spending all my time here bitching about stuff to no end. Just one fourth of it.

Not only that, but I don't entirely agree with your theories on what's acceptable for sizes and what's not. Most of the time, the opinions you voice seem somewhat extreme.

Anyway, I'm not trying to change the internet single-handedly, as you seem to be. I'm just trying to get you to stop bothering everybody else on this one site.

Dave... You seriously suck for that. That's like saying "Well, I don't care if the download speed for that 1 GB file I uploaded is capped at 15 Kbps, because I have it on my hard drive already." Not everybody has as 1337 of a connection as you, and although you don't have to restrain yourself to 100 Kb images, uploading BMPs and just waving it off because you alone can handle it should be punished by hanging.

The difference between you and I is, I know for a certainty that anyone can get an image size below 150k and still have excellent results.
Obviously though, that's also dependent on the dimensions of the image. Which leads us to another topic: What dimensions would you consider reasonable for an image? I'd normally say 1024x768 is good for screenshots, but then there are people who run with this as their native resolution, and for them 800x600 is a better option. With 800x600, you may also be able to have a higher quality image with the same file size as a larger one.

I wish everyone would stop campaigning against Orpheus. I don't give a shit if you hate him, your neverendingly stupid comments and useless arguments are obnoxious and annoying.

Half the time you don't even believe what you're saying. You're just saying it for the sake of arguing.

Seriously, stfu or gtfo.

(Also Orph, I think this situation would resolve itself if you just ignored them. You're mature enough to ignore such idiots, right?

But yes Master Trapt. I can do as you say and ignore the angry retorts. I won't ignore the screenshot, but I can ignore the retorts. Fair enough?
That's what I meant. I don't mind you complaining about image sizes. I've got ADSL and still find unnecessary bitmaps and PNGs annoying. :)

File >> Save As.. >> .jpg (JPEG)
not hard.
I use 800x600 unless its source then its the widescreen 16:9 stuff.
Either way. Mspaint, no matter how bad it is, is streamlined for screenies.

Yay, reviving this crap thread.

I'm really starting to agree with Orpheus about having general map screens under 80 KB (I just tried it out with PSP 10, and it can work amazingly well), but when an image needs to have readable text, like in desktop screens, I believe this is the wrong approach to have. For those circumstances, I'd go for a little under 150 KB.
