I've been messing around with displacements, just doing some out door scenery and such, and when i go to throw a grenade, or a prop_physics, they just fall straight through the displacement. I can't seem to fix this..

HL2 Bug - Been around for as long as I can remember...I thought they fixed it :S There was a small fix you could do by using Advanced Compile and inputting something...Sorry I can't be much more help.

Hmm. Yeah because i checked the texture application settings in the displacement tab, and "not solid" (or whatever it is, hammer's not open ATM) is unchecked..
ok I'll look into the advanced compile options, thanks for the help.

Tetsu0 - update SDK, this bug fixed. In advanced compile options command "-novirtualmesh" no longer supported.
Posted 17 years ago2007-03-14 12:20:58 UTC Post #215809
how do i update the sdk? I don't see an option for that anywhere...

EDIT

wait... i'm refreshing the sdk content right now.
I dont know what that's gonna do tho.

Yeah that didnt work.
Npc's grenades, props... everything but me (the player) falls through the displacement

If Hl2 has clip brushes you can place them inorder to make it solid, or maybe a nodraw brush... :
Posted 17 years ago2007-03-14 14:48:03 UTC Post #215819
The clip brush doesn't stop physic props. :<
Try refreshing SDK Content...If that don't work maybe Valve did it again...I haven't mapped in a while so I don't know.

I wouldn't be surprised if valve broke it again. I still can't learn to map source cause hammer gets a memery error within seconds (I'm not sure as I'm not an exspert but someone said the error i was getting was a "null" memery error. No idea what that is lol

I also have this bug.
And it wasn't there in the beginning.
I remember doing "on the run with barney" and all ragdolls and all props collided correctly with the displacement.

But suddenly it stoped working for like, a half year ago..? (Not sure at all, but that was the time when I first discovered the bug)

Edit:

DragonFly: I think I know how you can deal with that memory error, check uhr PMs

That wouldn't happen to do with anything such as that guy who gave you the same help when you had that error? ^_^

Adding -novirtualmesh to the command line in normal compile mode won't work, but appending it to the compile processes in Expert Mode will (for me at least).

Make Expert Mode look like this:

Well the -novirtualmesh worked for the pistol and the item_suit

my map layout has a room with an item_suit, a table with a pistol on top of it
and outside the room is a combine soldier.

basically on start of the map, the combine soldier and the table fall through the displacement onto the nodrawbrush underneath it, yet the pistol and the item_suit remain on the displacentment..

do i really need to make the func clip vphysics for every area of my displacement?

Kinda defeats the purpose of the ease of use of the displacement

Aww damnit valve.
These problems are precisely why i didnt want to move to source mapping in the first place

Well, source SDK is not for kids. Now mapping & modding is harder, than 10 years ago; people, who can read some documentation and have some patiense will be able to do what they need. You think thousands of mappers & modders, who actually do tonns of source content have no any troubles? No, they jus knows how handle it :sarcastic:

Ok
Because that helps me at all.
I DONT know how to handle this situation, or else i wouldn't have started this thread in the firstplace

Weird! I remember this bug cropping up ages ago. I also remember it being resolved ages ago, so I'm not entirely sure what's going with yours, Tetsu0.

Try taking a look at the VDC and seeing what turns up. I've never actually had that problem before, which is why it's so weird...

Had a look at the VDC and couldn't find anything useful....
This is really putting a damper on my mapping :|

have you tried re-installing the SDK?
Posted 17 years ago2007-03-22 00:39:02 UTC Post #216680
From HL2world topic:
---cut---
There are two solution to this issue:
1. Add the -novirtualmesh option to the vbsp.exe command line.
2. Re-compile your mod using the new SDK code.
---cut---

for now only 2 variant works - you need new client.dll & server.dll

From VDC:
---cut--
In the new SDK it is necessary to build the client and server DLLs before running the mod. Please build them if you see this message when trying to run the mod.
--cut--
I'm not a cool hacker, so i can do that - i just copy dll's from source sdk base.gfc - they works fine for my mod.

wth does that mean

You need to replace dll files in bin directory of your mod on latest versions.

its gcf not gfc
