Hey. I just got done playing EP1 and i moved onto EP2 and my performance sucks now. I'm using the default settings, and getting no more than 22 fps when staring into a brick wall. Lowering everything to "Low" Only gives me another 4fps... wtf is happening?

HL2 and CSS are doing the same thing.

It was working fine before but now it's terribly slow and laggy.

I have trillian, steamclient, and Spybot S/d working in the background, but i always had and it's never been this crappy before. EVER.

Running a Pentium 4 @ 3.00ghz
1.5g ram
and a NVidia Geforce 6200

anyone have any suggestions?

Closing spybot s&d + trillian helps. Everything not related to gaming (steam, xfire, etc) or is a critical program (firewall/ anti-virus/ wi-fi manager) should be closed.

Before and after shots....

Before

After

http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/3221/ep2outland010002kv0.jpg

That's barely a difference. I Lag just the same

I'll try closing everything, restarting steam and playing again...

Man and I thought that the grav gun was low-res on highest...

Your problem is the new aspects of the Source engine used, if you notice, fire looks better. However the main aspect would be the dynamic flashlight/lighting that has more realistic shadows, the flashlight is bad because it casts shadows on everything that it points at.

Anyways, the 6200 would be whats slowing you down in the end. Its odd that you still get the same fps with everything on low though.

Episode 2 is running fine for me. Except for glitches and missing textures, but I know the reason for that...

Maybe you do need to update your card? ATI =P
Besides that, it could be other simple things. Last time you defragged your disk?
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-15 22:13:50 UTC Post #236443
I know my card isn't exactly 'good' but i was pulling almost 70 fps with the same settings in ep1

it doesn't really make any sense to me

EP2 DOES require higher standards though. In HL2 and such it automatically sets EVERYTHING on the highest for me. In EP2, most of it is on Medium.
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-15 22:17:50 UTC Post #236445
yes. the only thing that's different is the default texture quality is medium. everything else is defaulted.. i'll get a screenshot real fast

I'm really stunned as to why the recommended settings are killing my system

http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/9409/lkjhtouyikq8.jpg

The low settings are better, but there's barely any difference. I still lag profusely, and that damn audio stutter is still there as well

yeah. everything for me went down though. but i think it's pretty much the same otherwise. because the models look better yet (even though alot of them were remade, i mean they seem higher res) although i think some of the map textures are a bit on the low side, but i don't mind.

even in the most intense scenes, like the antlions w/ the rebels and the sensors, and the first ministrider attacks, i was still getting pretty low lag, if any. i should turn on net_graph so i can see. =D

for GF6200 - 25 fps is good in EP2. On my 7800GS sometimes i have same fps :combine:

I knew it! Your computer is better than mine and yours ran badly. That's why I'm gonna upgrade before I play Portal and Ep2. So I guess I froze my cake and will have to have it later, although, it will taste a bit funny! :biggrin:

Yes, definitely close Steam. Resource hogging programs like that are non-critical to running games like Half-Life 2: Episode 2.

Tetsuo, just in case you encounter further problems, i found that my default filtering mode caused some slow-down in the wide-open areas. I don't even know what it does, but i saw no difference graphically, but a big difference of performance after changing it to trilinear.

The flashlight is deadly, I went in and played, without flashlight, on high, 2xaa, 1280x1024 = 45fps, turned the flashlight on, instantly dropped to 25fps.
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-17 18:21:44 UTC Post #236536
It is deadly...If you have the old HL2 font in your windows/font folder then the flashlight HUD is a big square.

So refrain from doing that...

I got another error guys... Turning my DXlevel to 80 works fantastic, i must day dave. Like it's incredible :) I thank you again for that but now i'm getting this other error in episode 2.

I'm sure you all know and love the tunnel loading scenes with the bright white light yes?

Well shortly after getting the infuckingcredible muscle car ep2 crashes in the tunnel relaying me this quaint message: "failed to lock index buffer in CMeshDX8:LockIndexBuffer"

Gives me a little 'OK' button and 30 seconds later i'm staring at my steam games list.

im not happy :(

oh and one more thing, if anyone else uses the mat_dxlevel 80 thingy, just put + infront of it and slap it into the launch settings so you dont gotta do it every time you load hl2:ep2

I don't mean to derail the thread, but while we're on the subject of startup commands, how would I force EP2 to load with the Texture Quality setting at "Very High"? Every time I load the game, it reverts to the default settings and I have to go in and change it, even if I apply them and exit the game with no crash.

Back to the problem at hand: Have you done the Steam fix-all thing with the .BLOB files and what not, and have you tried running the game in different DX levels when making that level transition?
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-17 22:05:01 UTC Post #236553
I cant seem to find the .blob files. i searched the entire steamapps folder and i yield no results.

havent had time or patience to run it at a different DX level..

um

if dave would be so kind and answer me this question (or if anyone else knows)

could i set the mat_dxlevel to like.. 90 or 01 or something?

my default is 95 but can i go somewhere in-between with this?

Posted 17 years ago2007-10-17 22:53:56 UTC Post #236562
randomsteamfilethatbreaks.fail

You've got only a few Direct X levels:

70 = DX7
80 = DX8
81 = DX8.1
90 = DX9
95 = DX9 SM3 (Called DX9+ in GUI settings)

That HDR and phong mapping in DX9+ is way too much for a GeForce 6200.

Settings are suppose to stick, but I guess Steam randomly defaults settings. Like, I'm always defaulted to headphones instead of 2 speakers.

Good stuff.
I did the Dxlevel 90 and it works great. I had to lower my res to 800x600, but im running everything on high, trilinear filtering, shadows on low, shaders on high, and gettin rougly 30-35 fps now.
AND it loads finally.

Thanks for those console commands, but how'd you learn about that stuff?

Well, I don't think so, saw. I don't know, how ep2 handles this card, but it doesn't support shader model 3.0. Ati specifies the shader model in this card as 2.0+. Think what you want from that :

Yup. I have an X850, without SM3 support. Pretty sucky, since the X1700+ cards aren't that much more powerful hardware-wise but do support SM3. Oh well.

Think of the poor Nvidia stock holders who'll earn 4.7x10^-12 less cents per share if you don't buy a new videocard.
