So, it's:
The Citizen - 4

If it hits 10 with no other maps nominated - voting will be closed. :P

Dm_particle, to keep things a bit fairer. I can't play HL2 maps anyways, at least for more than 30 minuets at max due to a need for a bigger PSU, so yea, DM_Particle.

Once the bugfix comes out, i'll be able to finish it.

I don't understand. Why can't we vote for maps made for third party mods?
It doesn't seem fair if someone releases an incredible NS map or something, but is ineligible just because it was made for NS.
Just because some people don't have a mod doesn't mean it has to be off limits to everybody.

Tru dat, but because the REVIEW TEAM might not have a mod, reviewing said 3rd party mod maps would be difficult.

Can a person earn a MotM award only once? The way it appears in the Profile it does. It should say what month it was for so if won twice, two can validly appear and the maps should be label with a similar trophy icon as well. Maybe a MotM maps along with the 'Recent Maps' and 'Top Maps' on the front page.

...or is this more towards TWHL3 stuff?

the current system is pretty basic atm rim, i'll put more into it in THWL3. maybe not in the first release, initially TWHL3 will have the about same functionality of TWHL twelve months ago, then i'll start adding stuff like MOTM, projects, and other surprises :)

edit: i vote for dm_particle because i've actually played it. it is very dark tho.

Haha, I only just noticed this thread.

The whole contest seems a little odd this time around to me. After all, Citizen is 16 maps. All the other entries are a single map. Doesn't that skew things any?

Just wondering.

I'm assuming that I can't vote this time. :D

But it seems to be less popular than my "boring as shit" mod. We know at least some people enjoyed it, which was our objective.

Well I really don't care too much what happens here. I know that many people, including many whom I don't know personally, have spent many hours enjoying Citizen. And that's all the reward I need.

But, I think that if Citizen doesn't win this .... well Jesus. You'll have to take a long hard look at the reputation of TWHL. Because any mapper with any skill can see that Citizen is not even in the same league as it's competitors here. It's far more accomplished than all of the other contenders put together - in every way - and whether you like Citizen or not, you can't justify denying that.
Posted 17 years ago2007-12-08 20:02:48 UTC Post #240285
I was joking, you don't have to count our votes.
But yes, it does say a lot about some people if they are voting not because they like map A (some users have already specified they don't have HL2), but because they specifically don't want map B to win. Meaning that if it wasn't dm_particle in this case, they'd vote whatever else was in its place. Says a lot about maturity or rather lack of ;)
Posted 17 years ago2007-12-08 21:01:21 UTC Post #240291
Playbus, I wouldn't have to take any look at the reputation of TWHL. Not that we have a reputation. I might take a look at YOUR reputation after hearing you gloat about how incredible you think your own mod is though. Because, really, we aren't voting on how much effort anybody put into something, we're voting on how much we fucking enjoyed it. And if somebody enjoyed a very well made deathmatch map to what they considered to be a large, complex, yet in the end disappointing mod, then that damn well is their right.

Hell, I don't even think you deserve to win after getting so bent out of shape over your mod not getting a unanimously positive response. That'd be unfair to Kasperg though, as I haven't seen him complaining on the same level you have this whole time.
Posted 17 years ago2007-12-08 21:55:10 UTC Post #240293
Srry, I think it you squeezed a little bit out of each of the 16 maps, you'd end up with enough content to make a good one. I've made a few good DM maps in the past, and I would objectively choose "The Citizen" over any of them every single time, even with the bugs the first version has. But again that's just my opinion.
...after hearing you gloat about how incredible you think your own mod is though
He hasn't said "incredible" anywhere. He was probably thinking of objective things such as amount of content, architecture, lighting, layouts, scripting, humour, originality, replay value etc.
Hell, I don't even think you deserve to win after getting so bent out of shape over your mod not getting a unanimously positive response
That's part of what I was talking about in my earlier post. Some of the decisions are not based on the quality of the maps and their content or even the enjoyment gotten out of them, it's based on personnal issues regarding the author/s, thinking more of "punishing" someone's map instead of congratulating the author of another map. Would the voting be the same if the exact same copy of "The Citizen" was made by any two other users? I have a feeling it wouldn't.

ok guys, discussion of The Citizen in this thread ends here.

Playbus, while my vote was swayed towards the citizen for several reasons, you have to understand that sheer ammount of work alone is not enough to win MotM. It is purely how much the voters enjoyed playing and the people who voted against you already stated in your thread that they didn't enjoy it.

I understand you get defensive when you feel something you've worked on for a rediculously long time, with no physical gain for yourself, doesn't get appreciated as it probably should, but if people didn't enjoy it, you can't force them to, nor can you argue that it's unfair if they don't vote for you.

My vote goes to The Citizen

If MotM works with (as you mentioned) "voting against", then count me out of any future reviews or anything to do with it. I'm all for congratulating mappers for the good job, but childish attitudes don't appeal to me.

I think it should straight up be a coded poll box, that doesn't list results until after it is closed. And it just lists all the maps posted within the past month.

Posted 17 years ago2007-12-08 22:18:19 UTC Post #240299
That would eliminate many problems. Such as the one at hand. As well as simply the process. No more looking through the vault just to see when a map was posted.

Oh wow, what happened to the moderators in this thread?

Read this as coming from a mod, not from me specifically:

1. Playbus and Kasperg, while your mod might have an impressive number of maps, MOTM is not about how much content you have, it's about how much they enjoyed the map. In the end it is the choice of the voters. All this going on about how you absolutely know without a doubt that your mod is obviously superior to everyone else's must stop. It is arrogant and indeed childish that you don't accept someone else's opinion just because it is negative.

2. It is perfectly acceptable to vote for another option because you don't want another option to get in. this is how democracy works. If you don't like one option, you vote for the other. Simple as that.

3. TWHL3 will have a significantly better method of catering for MOTM. Indeed, it will be integrated into the map vault.

4. It is expressed in the rules that you cannot vote for your own map. This includes mods with more than one member not being allowed to vote for the mod as a whole. This should be obvious from the rules. Stop trying to change them.

Now from me:

I voted for particle because I enjoyed playing it when I was playtesting with a few other people. I enjoyed it more than The Citizen. So it gets the vote.

This thread is now about the original topic. Stop arguing and vote.

Don't use your mod privileges to silence people when you see fit and dictate when or where off-topic and on-topic periods start. Specially if you've just written an off-topic post. I don't think that's fair and it could mean you're unable to politely discuss this matter. :|
It has everything to do with MotM November so it's perfectly inside the main topic.
All this going on about how you absolutely know without a doubt that your mod is obviously superior to everyone else's
I'd never say that, specially because there just isn't any other mod to compete against. I think that reason alone makes things different: For me, I thought this whole MotM thing was a way to tell people (members and outsiders) that if they had to download only one thing out of the whole TWHL map vault production for that month, it would have to be that map and no other. So in that sense it's hard for us to understand why you'd specifically not want a certain map to be recommended, one which we think has objectively a lot more to offer to users, without being perfect or "Mod of the Year", or have Valve's signature.
It is arrogant and indeed childish that you don't accept someone else's opinion just because it is negative.
Not only do we accept it, we've modified many things for the update with your advice, Trapt's, Strider's etc. But we're talking about a thread to vote for a map you like, not against one you don't like! You have a thread and a MV entry to throw all your Citizen complaints at. Seems that's not enough.
It is perfectly acceptable to vote for another option because you don't want another option to get in. this is how democracy works. If you don't like one option, you vote for the other. Simple as that.
That's pretty lame, and just shows the people who do so as nothing more than little kids. When you are talking about politics, you specifically don't want a certain party to rule your country, that's why you vote for the other one. How you extrapolate it to this really puzzles me. Does it hurt your life so much to see mapA or mapB win?
We won't and can't take that little joy of life from you, so do whatever you want. ;)
