Found this posted on FPSB. It's not much, but hey. At least we know Half Life will continue to be milked after Episde 3. Just hope it doesn't become Halo-dry.

Does it seem to anyone else like we just barely got into the Half-Life 2 universe at this point? And already they're gonna be switching? I mean, I assume they're not going to stick to the same theme.

I think Episode Three will tie up the HL2 era story quite nicely, and to be honest I don't think they'll move too far away from it in the sequel(s), people like the current characters and if Gordon was moved forward further in time and left them behind, then damn!

Better yet, with all they've learnt making these episodes the quality of HL3 on release should be miles ahead of HL2 when it was first released (let's face it, HL2 isn't as good in quality as they say it is).

Haven't they already announced EP4 etc being shunted off onto another developer like they did with Blue Shift/Opposing Force?
In that case, Half-life could easily end at EP6 or whatever. (I hope not).
I certainly hope they are making a better game engine (proprietary, not based off Quake II Engine). Compiling sucks!

Valve wouldn't use their engine, they'd make their own.

Well the Unreal 3 engine's pretty much obsolete compared to CryEngine2. And the Source engine is more then obsolete, but somehow it's games are still going strong.

Source is good because it's really the only engine that allows people to easily create custom content for it, much like the engines of old. From what I know, CryEngine2 is a giant, useless sandbox, and Unreal editing is a gigantic pain in the ass.

I do hope Valve mix it up a little more if they decide to do another engine. Compilling is annoying, BSP is annoying and yeah...

I hope Gordon never, ever gets the Portal gun. Ever.

It doesn't suit the HL2 feel at all and would break the gameplay considerably, limiting Gordon to boxy indoor maps.

Also agreed, but I must say that they did a fantastic job upgrading the Source Engine with the Orange Box. I never thought it could look as good and perform as well as Episode Two does.

Well whatever is next, it won't be called HL3. Doug Lombardi has said many times, in many interviews, that the Episodes, combined, are what Valve would have called HL3. Hopefully the saga won't be condemned to shitty spinoffs after the Episodes.

That doesn't mean it won't essentially BE Half-Life 3. They might just leave out the number and give it a name, like Half-Life: Blah Blah Blah.

But will they continue to drag out the same thing only looking better like all the other titles such as Need For Speed and Medal of Honour. I think they should make a Half-Life 3 but they could do what other game developers have done and just gone for a trilogy (think I spelled it right). For some reason, doing that makes the game almost famous, I mean look at Halo, third game sold over a million copies in the first few hours.

Halo is always going to be bigger than half life.
This almost offends me. Almost.
Halo is only bigger than Half Life because it came out as a launch game for the Xbox. It showed off how powerful the Xbox was and turned out to be the only thing worth buying on a near dead-on-arrival system. That's the only reason it ever got as popular as it is today. It was all in the timing.
If Halo were released as "just another PC game" like Half Life, it would never have reached the kind of mind-boggling publicity it gets now. Halo is a fun game, that's a no brainer. But there is nothing remotely revolutionary about any of the Halo games, thus not warranting it such popularity. It just doesn't deserve it.

Half Life did it first; Half Life did it better.

I agree, if Halo were released solely as a PC game, it would've flopped, because it's absolutely shit.

Posted 16 years ago2007-12-21 05:14:39 UTC Post #241655
I don't think it's being a fanboy... it's just not having fun playing the game. Would you have enjoyed it just as much if it was released on the PC first instead? Would you have even cared about playing it?

But whatever, this really is a pointless subject.
Posted 16 years ago2007-12-21 11:32:09 UTC Post #241666
Being 'fun' doesn't make it 'good'. I'm sure that when pirates pilladged villages they had a ball, but that didn't mean it was happy times for all. :P

I just thought Halo had every single cliched FPS element in it, which made it utterly boring and pointless to play for me. The fact you could only carry something like two weapons made it even worse than Far Cry.
AJ AJGlorious Overlord
Posted 16 years ago2007-12-21 14:53:15 UTC Post #241673
The two weapon thing is all about balancing. The thing the Halo games have gotten right from the very beginning is multiplayer. Sure the singleplayer wasn't special, a bit of a let-down even. Still, there's no denying it is the deepest multiplayer fps on any console, and if you are denying it, then you don't know everything about it. Not having a mod community will always put it at a disadvantage for being a console game though.

I mean, they went over the top making sure it was fun as hell.

Posted 16 years ago2007-12-24 02:01:03 UTC Post #241838
I have played Halo 1 and 2 (don't have an XBox anymore to play 3), yes i enjoyed the game and multiplayer was OK but once is enough. It had great SP elements and I was happy with the the two weapon limit, especially when in Halo 2 you could hold two at a time, but really, halo lacks Long-Term playability. Once you've finished it the story is boring to play again and all you have is un-inspiring multiplayer, the only fun thing about multiplayer was the vehicles (used to blow my brother up with the scorpion when he was in a banshee. Ahh, good times :^_^: ). Half-Life really does conquer both Halo1 and 2 mainly because of the custom mapping ability and large fan base. Honestly, if Half-Life 3 could provide an array of good vehicles, a wide range of effects, tools, good storyline and monsters, and all easy for mappers to use or modify then Half-Life would reign supreme over all other games. That is what I think anyway.

Its good to hear they'll continue milking their money cow for a little while longer.

In my opinion, the next HL will probably be something like taking the fight to the combine (in their world), or maybe learning more about G-man.

Only time will tell.

Learning more about the G-Man, definitely. Considering how slowly the story's progressed in the other episodes, there's no way we're gonna find out everything about him in just one more installment.

Combine homeworld though...I wouldn't be keen on that at all. Valve isn't very adept at creating otherworldly environments, as we saw in Half-Life, and the series has always had its basis on earth anyway. I think a major change like that would be a turn for the worse, and I don't think it's likely at all, either.

I don't know, maybe Valve is going to ditch the whole combine thing and move onto something else next time around. I think the theme of this enemy is getting pretty tired.
Posted 16 years ago2007-12-24 09:51:18 UTC Post #241848
First off, this is pretty cool to hear. I just hope they keep the name to Half-Life 3 because it sounds complete, and I want to spend 6 years waiting for that, and not, "Half-Life:The Combine Strikes Back!"

Also, I rather enjoyed the first Halo on the PC, aside from the crappy netcode.

Episode 3 really better have some new weapons. Where the hell are my Snarks?! Or Egon and Gauss guns?! Hell, I'd even settle for the hive hand...

Half-life is outdated. Considering they did a pretty good job with outdoor environments in EP 2 I think that the look of alien worlds this time round will be much better.

Still, I have to agree with you that it probably isn't going to happen, and that it may not be the best path for them either.

I doubt Valve will simply "ditch" the whole combine thing. I think they may want to drag it out for a little longer. But considering the situation they were left in at the end of EP 2, EP 3 will probably be the end for them.

I wonder if they plan to turn G-man into you next enemy.

I dunno, if it weren't for those rocky outcrop models they put in them it would've looked very nice. Those models were just out of place.

And yeh, it does resemble Xen, somewhat inevitable really since they were both caves and tunnels.
