I tried using some textures from HL:Source, and this is what I get:

Purple and black squares, all over the texture.

Why is it doing that?

Purple+black squares = Texture not found/Couldn't load texture.

But the computer thingy is clearly visible, so the texture was found.

wait, wait, wait, is is that the hammer 3D view?! Because a texture not found in hammer resolves in white.

This is what happened if you tried to map for any Orange Box game before the SDK came out. The checkerboard is the missing detail texture, which is layed over the diffuse texture. Hence, why you can see the computer screen.
