Think small, halflife uses an engine over 5 years old and most of your 'grand ideas' will have to wait till halflife 2 or be moved to something more scalable.

Whats new is generally good. Learn to texture for yourself, a new coat of paint can give life to a dull map. A FRESH (custom textures) coat of paint can put your map above those that use whats included with the mod you're mapping for or the standard halflife.

snap to grid is your friend. all the maps i make now use snap to grid. believe me, it makes texturin a hell of a lot easier.

yes, but how are u supposed to make regular sized rooms? Unless you make the grid size small (which I don't) you will make HUGE objects! Always plan out you map on paper. It always helps. If you make a map from scratch without a plan, it will be pointless and probably won't be very good layout compared ot if you drew out the map first!

Well, unless you non-practical goose, i tend to enlarge the grid when making large rooms, and make it smaller when i make details.

Using a negative wall thickness in the arch tool seems to create inside-out brushes, don't do it. The <shift> key is your friend; hold while rotating and it snaps 15 degrees; hold it while dragging and you get copy. Save your work frequently and sequentially -- if you screw up badly enough you may need to take a few steps back. And the most important rule,
Never taunt a moderator!

Always remember to change the brush back to the block tool - I mean how many times do you go to create a brush when you still have a prefab or cyllinder still selected - THAT is thee most annoying little habit. :|

if you have to make advanced brushes with vm always use triangles, you cant make inv brushes with that way believe me

click the vertex manipulation tool twice to move vertexes only, or faces only ;)
