Ive become pretty good at creating models in blender but now want to put one into halflife 1. Is there any good tutorials out there on what to do? What do I need to convert my models into the right format? I want to create a butterfly that flaps its wings and follows a path.

I had the same prob, I searched for some script that alows blender to save models in hl mdl format, but the answer there is no such script. So if you want to make models for hl with blender you need an aditional modeling program that can save to mdl. format. I suggest you to use milkshape it isnt profesional modeling program, but it can save and open models from almost any game and program you could need.

As far as I am aware (I've only dabbled in XSi and Milkshape) you have to save reference meshes and all animations in .smd format which you then use along with texture .bmps and a .qc information file containing the names of all the files, animations and hitboxes and all that crap to get a complete model file (.mdl). I'm not sure if there are applications to do this but a .qc compiler comes built in with Milkshape 3D.

Milkshape isnt the best modelling program noob, and it doesnt mean something is good just because it costs money, just look at the new 3dstudiomax 2009, its a pretty unstable piece o shit, still it costs a lot of money.

Zeeba did you steal my idea ?
Anyway blender is surely the best freeware modelling program ( it has a built-in game engine ) .
I also heard of K3D , but I never actualy used that program .
Google Sketchup is for beginners , I guess ...

I think there is some sort of plugin for blender, i know i used it many moons ago for this purpose.

Sketchup is nice to make quik layouts and spot problems early on.
