I've been playing TF2 for a while and am experiencing fairly poor performance, despite my PC still being pretty new.

Specs:
Quad Core @ 2.4GHz
2Gb DDR2 800Mhz RAM
GeForce 8500 GT, 256Mb
400 GB 10000 RPM SATA

With all graphic settings maxed out (AA, VS, etc.), running on 1400x900 gives me a poor and almost unplayable 15-20fps. Going down to 1024x768 doesn't help too much either, gaining me another 5-10 fps.

I may be wrong, but shouldn't a computer like this run any Source game at best graphics without problems?
Updating GPU and BIOS drivers did nothing. What gives? :<

AA and Filtering takes a lot of power.
Try dragging them down a bit. The difference is so small you will hardly notice the difference, yet the performance will probably change dramatically.

I'm not totally familiar with GeForce cards above the 6xxx series, but as far as I know the 8500 GT isn't exactly a gaming beast. In high resolutions like 1400x900, you should turn AA off, or maybe even lower the resolution.

Btw, in 1024x768 - is that 5-10 fps gain with or without AA? Cards below x600 (8600, 9600) are pretty AA sensitive.

EDIT: Yeah, basically what Madcow said. :)

A 5-10 fps gain.
Guess its back to reducing graphics quality. ;<

How much did you lower it? ;O

And how are your other settings setup?

OH and did you try lowering the resolution like Mastymoo said?
You see, on one of my computers (the best one) some games won't run well at all with 1400 x 900, they lag like shit. Don't know why, it's an awesome computer, can't remember the specs tho

You should check your RAM levels too , maybe you have to many programs opened .
Try making a defragmentation . I recommend you using "SmartDefrag".
As MastaKilla said , your video card isn't a gaming beast . From what I know , that card is even cheap .
Furthermore , maps may cause problems too . You'll have different performances in a box and in a industry complex .
If you have windows vista , try turning off some advanced features like Aero and these things .
Keep in mind to turn off your browser too .

Change filtering to bilinear, and keep AA at at least 2x. Games are so ugly without AA.

Use the steam .gcf defragger on all Source2007 games, and refresh TF2's local content.

Check your virus scanning software and other such likely candidates to be sneakily using all your system resources in the background.

You should check your RAM levels
This would only affect loading times, not fps. He has 2GB RAM anyway, so it's not the problem.
Keep in mind to turn off your browser
Won't do anything.

I can't tell the difference. My recommendation would be to turn AA off and leave AF on whatever you want, because AA takes up a lot of processing power, but AF takes relatively little.

If you do refresh local content (it won't do anything) do it before defragging. Also, use GCFScape to defrag, not Steam.

The most important question is: what's your performance in episode 2? (compared to tf2)

my computer is a massive load of shit and i can run tf2 at 1440x900 at high settings with AA and AF and HDR and motion blur and whatever else at a playable FPS.

i have an 8600GT though.
