I can't help it. L4D is incredible.

I need to do a whole campaign.

roughly 0.87 miles (1.40km) passing several iconic Glasgow locations and finishing in the wonderful Glasgow Central Station, where survivors will escape via Train.
Green highlights are safe houses, where the map will change.

I'll be working alongside Tuna & PaulRPG and anyone else who wants to lend a hand would be welcome.

If it's done well, it will be truly epic.

I keep forgetting how there needs to be a 'series' of maps for L4D levels, making there so many possibilities.

I really hope you can suggest to the director where tanks should spawn, because the large carpark (which will be a tad less densely populated) would be a hillarious tank fight.

hmm. i wonder if it automatically adds that blue glow around interactive items. Could be a little difficult to make buttons obviously interactive if it doesn't, since that's what players are used to.

This is a great idea for a campaign, and now you've said you'll do it, you have to do it, otherwise TWHL will rise against you.
Posted 15 years ago2008-11-22 15:52:14 UTC Post #258904
tsk Hunter my man I thought you of all people knew by now you shouldn't declare you are building this and this before actually having much done.

What happens if you get bored? Will you finish it? What about that source Mod you showed us for example?

I'm sure you'll do it but try to keep the declaring to a minimum ;P I'd help in small bits but I don't know anything about that area so :P

Heh...This whole project is complicated. Well if you need models I don't mind having a go at it. I need to practice more to develop my skills.

(Don't worry I've done it all before aka Mole Man for my Interlopers compo entry...)

Hah that's not too hard to do. Like a rounded box with some gay curve bits. Only pain is a texture since I don't own one but I'm sure I could find one somewhere.

Erm but for now I'mma play some L4D since I haven't done so in a while :P

Speaking of which when you say "Microplay" do you mean the map or are you putting that in your L4D map :P

I will help! You need me! What with my astounding knowledge of Glasgow and all.*

Besides I could really do with building on my Source mapping skills.**

After playing through L4D I feel I have a real eye for gameplay mechanics and how to make a functional yet challenging set of maps.***

* Urby has never been to glasgow
** Since release of the Orange Box SDK Urby has put a serious amount of work into thinking about using it.

Why dont you just call it "Glasgow" and seperate the whole campaign in different chapters. Whould be much more awsome. Me and 3 friends just finished the last campaign on expert in 5 hours :D We killed 6710 zombies.

Is it me, or does it seem that the run from Saint Enoch Shopping Centre to the next safehouse is going to be a hike.

But the whole idea of escaping from a train at Central Station is great.
Posted 15 years ago2008-11-22 23:16:56 UTC Post #258923
If i put the final safe house closer to the shopping centre, players would get annoyed having to replay the final section to replay the final? (I know I do in 2 out of 4 of the official campaigns) and the centre itself is really too open for me to cut a section off to be a safehouse.

Sounds like a good plan, but don't be too worried about making it like the real city. Real Life locations aren't always that great for gameplay- hallways in games, for example, are usually 2-3 times wider than they would be IRL. Just make sure that gameplay > realism in your work, because 99% of the players won't have been to Glasgow, and won't care how much it looks like it. They just want to play a fun level.
Posted 15 years ago2008-11-28 15:30:51 UTC Post #259039
Thought you might want to see that the first test compile was a complete success, testing the scale and new textures to theme Microplay.

The infected die...
and the map itself:
work in progress!

note that it's been compiled in the Ep2 engine because Left 4 Dead's SDK has yet to be released.

I've been very busy.

The ones taken in Central Station all feature my estranged friend because you're not allowed to take pictures in stations. We pretended to be foreign and taking holiday snaps. it worked.

Seems there's one a few posts up. Hunter remember I said lighting was your weakness well if you need help then feel free to ask but really all it takes is a nice blue or orange to make a map sexy :P But an expert tweaks the cone size etc.

The unquestionably fantastic Habboi has contributed a lot to this campaign by creating several rather splendid models.
One of which is this rather dashing entertainment system.

and because i'm good to you, have a very WIP screenshot from the inside of Microplay

Hunter has the right approach I think, I definately find it easier making something as it is THEN destroying it, it helps to keep it realistic and you can focus on areas alot more, rather than planning how it's going to look all messed up and getting dissapointed that it doesn't look like the building.

Never noticed the Call of Duty joke. Lolled when I did.

Also, lets not forget that with the infection spreading and Glasgow being, you know, the way it is, Microplay may very well have been raided by now.

Consoles and PC's will have gone.

Aw don't say that :) My work will be wasted ;O

Unless the shop was sealed off quite well and you have to face some guy who rings a bell calling the horde :P

AND you could argue this is the start of the infection :) You're playing as alternative Bill's, Louis' etc

I need some input please.

I'm debating whether or not to add an appartment and rooftop section.
while this would offer welcome variance from the streets - location - streets - location repetition, it is already present in almost, if not all of the official campaigns.

Opinions?

HOLY COMMUNITY INPUT, BATMAN!

That's right, YOU, the community (Especially you, Adrian,) can now be part of this campaign of epic proportions.

Here are the ways in which you can be included:

1) as writing on the wall in the safe rooms. You know the type. Chicago Ted and his crazy promises.

2) as a DVD/game box with title and imagary of your choice.

Throw your suggestions at me to get included
