Google is already the top search engine and web advertising provider in the world. Now, they want to have what's on your PC's hard drive, and while they are add it, maybe even put out of business Microsoft Windows. I know, it sounds like bull shit, but this is more or less what this news story says that I found here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2009/jan/25/google-drive-gdrive-internet

Sounds to me like Google will make a few more mountains of cash and our lives will go on unaffected.

Apple has had a service like this for a while, and it certainly isn't a big deal. Gdrive is not going to put Microsoft out of business, kill the personal computer, or change the way I think about my PC as this article claims.

Google is becoming more and more like Microsoft. The difference is that Google make good software, Microsoft doesn't, because they don't have to. If Google would be in Microsoft's position I'm sure they would make about as crappy stuff as Microsoft is doing today. I personally hope Google will release an operating system, perhaps then Microsoft will realise the importance of making good software.
Google is already pwning Hotmail, MSN Search and MSN Video.

Google toolbar is probably one of the worst things ever. By itself, it makes the aforementioned horribly, horribly wrong.

Kill off the desktop PC, what on earth, I don't understand this, why would it kill off the desktop PC, wouldn't it be preferable to use a local HDD as it's way faster...? Anyway, you'd need hardware along with internet connection to access your files...

I think such an idea will become prominent in third world / poorer countries where new computers aren't viable for everyone, but a piece of crap that can use a fast connection would be just fine.

I can definitely see the use of this for frequent travellers who need to access relatively large amounts of data from anywhere, when working or whatever. But replace the desktop? Lame exaggeration.

For us gamers it doesn't really change anything - we'll still need both our hard drives and desktop computers.

Please get off the Microsoft-hate bandwagon.

There are too much to dislike about it.
1) They advertise. Capitalists.
2) Their products cost too much. $350 for Office when almost nothing good has been added since 1997? It's not like they need that much money.
3) Internet Explorer.
4) They have a monopoly on operating systems and web browsers and they are doing sick stuff to make sure it stays that way (for example developing DirectX and including IE in Windows).
Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike Microsoft more than other no-good-for-this-world-only-purpose-is-to-make-money companies. And there are too many of them to be counted.

While you can, anyway... Everything is moving towards(and has been for quite some time)being 100% online. When the time comes, you won't have a choice nor would you want to be unplugged(which will eventually be your only alternative to keeping private data).

Imagine having a sweet rig and no internet connection... It would be pointless, right? Well that time is coming soon when you will have to decide how important keeping your private data private really is...

You're completely wrong. Local hard drives will always be a very important part of the personal computer. To think otherwise is ignorant.

Unless some massive internet revolution happens, and everyone in the world gets super-speed internet, Google buys an entire continent of servers, and it suddenly gets massively more secure than it currently is. And I don't see that happening any time in the near (or far) future.

I never use internet-based storage. If I need to transfer files, I just use a USB flash drive. Much less of a hassle and far more secure (considering you don't lose it).

Also btw, i never meant local harddrives or memory or cpus at home will be eliminated (quite the contrary), but what i meant is you will not be able to access or use anything unless you are connected and all your data is accessible to some big corporate entity.

How would you access the internet in the first place if there was no local hard disc.
