I decided to make a tread that will track the mod's progress. Any questions, suggestions, or comments can be made here.

why are the images tiny, though?

Well... I had them HL screenshot sized, but they filled up the page a bit too much, so I resized them. I may add 1 or 2 hundred pixels to them later, but right now I think I kinda spammed the recent changes page with all my errors... :nervous: When it comes to wiki stuff, I'm still kinda n00bish...

Theres a lot of nice details furniture wise but the rooms are lacking. Round off some of the corners (such as in pics 2 and 3), add height to the rooms / walls (using more than one wall texture looks good) so that there is more variety and pay some attention to the ceilings. Lights are good but play around with grating, pipes, vents and other small details to create a sense of place.

Also, keep up the great work. :)

I have tried to make as many corners as possible rounded or 'shaved' as you see in pic 1, but thanks for the advice. I am working on detailing the maps that are currently in development, and I will consider pipes if I get into a more industrial/destroyed section of the station.
Also, keep up the great work
Why thank you! :glad:
Major update: Just finished another map and updated the wiki page. New media:

This is either a security room, a computer terminal, or both. When I made it I had the idea of a darkened room illuminated only by the screens. Let's just say it evolved.

This beauty of a Deagle hack was made by World Crafter. I love this model and the sounds It uses. :)
That's all for now.

Bump
I just made a desert eagle world model, so players will no longer have to pick up a 357 and use a deagle. Also, I just started mapping, I got bored for a bit there, so the mod will (hopefully) see some great progress soon.

I've just noticed something in those pics from March that I can't believe I didn't see before.

The lighting is damn bland. Variety is the spice of life my friend. A few different shades and colours will go a long way. Use 2 entirely different colours in some rooms or hallways so that you get a 3rd colour from the mixture. Valve did this surprisingly often in HL1, especially in Questionable Ethics.

I realize that there's only one colour of lighting, and that it helps, but I guess my excuse is that most real places use bland lighting... Don't worry, the final chapter of two will not have much white light, it will be colours of many varieties. I hope.

Honestly, that's a horrible excuse, and it's the same excuse everybody uses. Go into any chapter of Office Complex, noclip, and look down on the entire map from above. It's psychodelic. And it explains why you never got visually bored with Half-Life, because Valve CONSTANTLY changed the lighting scheme throughout a map. Even games today get stuck in this bland monochromatic color-coding of certain areas. Don't let it hold you back.
Posted 14 years ago2009-06-04 19:05:56 UTC Post #267956
I will use coloured lighting where it makes sense, don't worry.

I might start working on it with my old school computer, once I get it up and running. The laptop I was developing it on just ceased to function altogether.

EDIT: I just hit a snag that may be fatal.
It seems that the first map, s0a0, will no longer compile properly.
Every time I try, it crashes HL when I go to test it. I can't exactly rename it, because two other maps reference it in landmarks.
As soon as my internet stops being difficult, I'll upload the source files with a cut-down version of the wadfile. I think I may have to reboot my internet before that happens, though.

I tried the one before it, yes.
Although, it loads using a map command, so I may want to try the one AFTER it.
EDIT: no, same as before, crash to desktop.

I will reinstall Spirit of Half-Life again then.

What version of Spirit should I install. 0.o Long time since I checked the latest version and it seems the website is down or broken.

1.5a4 is the latest stable official build.
It's also what I'm using.
EDIT: My internet may still suck, but the old backup version I had on my memory stick is a life saver!
Now I just have to make sure it won't happen again.

Colony 42 Texture Contest!
Make a sign texture for a small shop, and it could be put in-game.
Texture must be divisible by 16, and usable in HL1. Just post the image in this thread if you're interested. The author/s of the winning two entries will be credited in the readme.

Well, I doubt that a high-tech space station would have Asbestos in it, but thanks.
This contest will be open until sometime tommorrow, because I want to compile.
Tetsu0, I may have a use for that in my next mod. I'm just gonna put that somewhere will I can find it later, with a readme. Sound good?

I'm thinking something like a game store or some such.

Don't you think some of that text is kind of small considering these are going to end up on little signs? Shrinking a 512x512 image onto a 48x48 brush face is usually not the best idea.

Oh common', you're talking about texture space usage now ? What are you still using floppy disks ?
And how readable is sign doesn't really matter. Maybe if you like starring at signs in a game yes but I doubt that. And anyway, most of the halflife.wad signs are poor quality anyway.
Oh, and I think jeffmod knows how to shrink an image from 512x512 to 256x256 or smaller :P.

Sorry, no news. I've actually lost interest for a bit, and am reading some fanfictions and playing other mods in the time being.
I will finish it. Eventually.
