Not liking this much at all. The new locations and new weapons sound appealing (minus the frying pan), but the rest just seems off. The Charger looks ridiculous and the only new survivor that fits the Left 4 Dead theme is that con artist.

It's like Valve handed it to an amateur company and told them to go nuts.

Please be a joke leading up to new DLC and Episode 3, pleeeeease.

it has been brought to my attention that 2 of the characters are quite possibly simply reskinned Heavy and Spy. also on the pc gamer cover they've revealed, it is dated 'august 2008' by the looks of it.

ridiculous music in videos, ridiculous dialogue, day time maps.

conspiracies... i'm really hoping this is all a big joke.

edit: Quote from Gabe a few months ago:

"So each time we've released one of those for Team Fortress 2 we've seen about a 20% increase in the number of people who are playing online. And that number is really important because it determines how many community created maps there are, how many servers are running, and so on. So we'll do the same thing with Left 4 Dead where we'll have the initial release and then we'll release more movies, more characters, more weapons, unlockables, achievements, because that's the way you continue to grow a community over time."

this has gotta be a load of shit

God I hope so. All the subtle signs point to it being a joke, but there's this nagging voice in the back of my head telling me bad things. D:
ridiculous music in videos, ridiculous dialogue
Don't know about that (no sound at work), but I read it's very... hillbilly.
day time maps
Don't have a problem with that though.

slated to arrive November 17 on PC and Xbox 360.
So, does this mean the PS3 and Wii got left out? Or are they just going to get it at a later date?
Posted 14 years ago2009-06-02 01:04:06 UTC Post #267784
hillbilly fiddle music. new dialogue involves a black man praying to save his grandma or something, a hillbilly talking shit and a man with a $20,000 dollar suit.

i agree it's gotta be an elaborate joke but i'm also having a bad feeling about this.

i don't have a problem with day maps either, but the one in the videos looks kinda odd... i get the feeling it's a night campaign they've turned to day to fuck with people's heads as part of the joke.

edit: ps3 and wii never had l4d.

Initial impressions form the trailer and gameplay videos make me hate what Valve is churning out for this one.
It looks like "just another game".

Quite plausible.

And yeah, Valve don't 'do' Wii or PS3, Tito. Not yet anyway.

Edit: my gut is telling me Valve will just let this stew for a while, then reveal what's actually going on, and some Episode Three news, on their last day of presentation.

The charger, exactly how it looks in L4D2, was actually an extremely popular idea conceived by someone on the Steam forums to fix closet camping.

But yeah, I hope this is some kind of really elaborate joke.

Should be Left 2 Die.

But seriously, this is really strange. I mean, it's like Left 4 Dead just came out. Valve has never developed a sequel this fast.

Been thinking about this, and I'm getting some conflicting information here.

First of all, as people have commented already, the player models look kinda crappy, which is very un-Valve-like. The counterpoint to this is that the original L4D models looked kinda rubbish too, but they changed them. The question to ask here is why not just use the original survivors? Also, why release media with crappy models?

Secondly, this is very, very, very fast for Valve, for something that they should have expected a rather long lifespan on. I mean, they're basically splitting their player base in two with a new game, as well as doing the complete opposite of what's happening with TF2.

These and a few other things make me think that this might be a joke, a fake, or a marketing stunt of some sort. But then there's loads of evidence to the contrary: it was announced at the Microsoft press conference, and do you really think that MS would allow Valve to pull a stunt like that? Also, now EVERYONE knows, I think it would be very difficult for Valve to pull off a reversal and reveal a "real" whatever without pissing the hell out of everybody.

And then there's the interviews, details, videos, etc. There's some obvious gameplay there that means that some serious work has been put into this. It's seriously confusing, and I think there will be more information revealed in the next few days. What that info will reveal, however, is unknown.

There's definitely something fishy going on.

Everything looks great except the survivors.
And I think that it's a bit shite releasing a new game instead of improving the old one which we've already learned to love. They should just go TF2-style and update it.
I also think that it's stupid since they didn't release an SDK for the first game until just recently. Releasing a new game so soon will probably take focus off the old game. They should let the old game grow a bit before they even start thinking about making a new title.

However I don't think this is a joke. There's too much information.

If you listen to the RPS podcast they point out that they have a lot of new things they want to add that won't work in DLC packs, they speak about how they are still going to be adding new content to L4D and that L4D 2 will adress issues people pointed out about L4D.
Posted 14 years ago2009-06-02 23:30:44 UTC Post #267845
Valve probably decided that it would be pointless to release more DLCs for L4D because now that they released the SDK there would be masses of custom content, so they decided to scrap building new content for an old game and recreate the game. Thats my idea anyway...
Posted 14 years ago2009-06-03 00:41:39 UTC Post #267848
It's not even an old game, though. I don't see many people working on maps for the original one either when there's a newer 'improved' version out there.

This doesn't make any sense from a marketing or content standpoint. All the new content previewed can easily be patched into L4D, they've been doing it with TF2 for well over a year already.

Ok. This is what I can see in the trailer.
  • Pistols now have limited ammo
  • Melee weapons
  • New maps (including daytime)
  • Zombies are more destructable (heads and torsos show impact damage)
  • Standard zombies are tougher (blowing off a limb doesn't phase them)
  • Survivors are yokels, who look and sound daft.
  • New Tank looks stupid.
I fail to see how a DLC couldn't include that stuff.

True, but TF2 is a compeditive multiplayer game. L4D is more story and game action. I guess they just want to try to hit back at reviewers who bagged L4D as too bland and lacking content. They want to hit with a revamped version or something. And a DLC for that stuff might be really big and defeat valves idea for a DLC. They probably think its worth re-releasing it to make a profit...

Listen to the RPS podcast. Urby, you listed a lot of things, they aren't going to make all of those good new additions into DLC for free, with that ammount they should make a new game. The podcast talks about how they had so many new ideas that they felt it would be better to make an entirely new game.

If you guys want it changed so much, just politely email Gabe Newell. He reads all of his fan mail, so if a few hundred emails came his way with negative reception about it, they may turn it into just an update with more options for mappers, like what characters to spawn and zombie models to use.
