I'm guessing he came across some sort of map pack that you have to pay for, and he's asking if that is legal or not.

If so, it's perfectly legal to charge for content you created. But it's pretty douchey.

These appear to just be popular and Official CS maps decompiled and changed to work for CS Zombiemod or whatever it's called. So it's not really their work.

Yes, because it's possible to copyright something you stole from another author. Basically, whoever is charging for this thinks they have a right to make people pay them for another person's work, just because they can decompile a map, add different entities for the Terrorist spawns, and recompile it again. Most likely without VIS. Or full RAD.

Well yeah, if the content is not created by you, then there's a good chance that trying to sell it is illegal.

It sucks, but I doubt that they'd ever get 'caught' doing it.

ninja defuse: No, in this particular case it's not legal, because they're decompiled (read: Stolen) versions of other maps made by other authors. If the map was completely made by the person charging for it, but still required the base game, (Ie. it doesn't come with a copy of CS in the download) then it would be legal. But a dick move.

hey these maps are not decompiled.. i mean they have nothing to do with de_dust2 etc.. i know that u can write somewhere "map made by xxx" but i believe u can not forbid people from playing a half-life, cs, map.. why should i pay around 15$ for a permission to allow me to upload these maps on my server and play them? once i said these maps have nothing to do with real counter-strike maps but they were made of official wad textures and i believe it is illegal to make money from SDK tools (including sources, editor....) without VALVE permission

Well if you haven't agreed to any license but still got the map sent to you by a server, you should be able to use it the same way you can use any other map.

They cannot sell resources from the game, but they can sell their custom maps that USE those resources. As long as the resources themselves are not included in the download, it's fine. I highly doubt that they can stop you from "stealing" the maps and putting them on your server without paying - in fact, that's exactly what I should think you should do. Trying to make money from maps is downright nasty and should not be encouraged.

It's not like it's something new: see the mw2 map package.
Companies become more and more greedy and try to squeeze every last possible drop of money they can do from shitty things like this. Or selling so called "skins" and models...
At first, most people laughed at this. But it has become a reality.
