Hi again.
I'm back with a new challanges. I'm searching for a tutorial that explain how to make a hollow round pillar. I'n new at this and i'm completely stuck and out of ideas.

You could perhaps create one of these and modify it form a round outside

http://www.twhl.co.za/tutorial.php?id=32

Edit: No you can't. Sorry.
In that case I don't know. I'm not much of an architect

There's no need for any vertex manipulation, all you need is an arch which is basically the exact same thing as a cylinder except that it's... hollow! :D

Here's how to make one:

1. Click the Block Tool button:

2. On the right, make sure Categories is set to Primitives and Object set to arch:

3. Now create an object like this:
User posted image
Grid size is 16 (change it with the [ and ] keys), zoom is 0.50 and the sube is 128w 128l 128h (width, length, height). Hit Enter to create the object.

4. A dialog box pops up:

Here you can specify the number of wall sections and width. Take over the settings you see on the image. When you're done, hit Ok.

And that's it! A hollow cylinder:

From here you can change the height, but avoid changing the width and length because that would mess up the object(object vertices go off the grid) and it'll look bad ingame.

Oh my god! That was simple :D Thanks for a fast answer.
Now whats missing is some windows, and thats seems easy too.

An alternative to the arch tool:
User posted image
1. Make a cube, an scale it to the desired outside diamater of your pipe.

2. Texture it with something circular as a guide. (type in "gear" without quotes and a bunch of circular textures will come up) i used c3a1_gear1. Apply the texture to one face and click "fit" button.

3. Clip the brush down the center up and down, so you have four equal pieces. delete all but 1 chunk.

4. using the texture as a guide, use the clip tool to approximate curve and thickness of the pipe.

NOTE: You may have to lower the grid size (using the [ and ] bracket keys) to be able to VM or clip to the desired shapes.

5. Clip again into 4 sections.

6. Use vertex manipulation to move create your desired hollow-cylindrical pieces.

7. Clone (SHIFT-drag) your completed section so you have 2 of them. Now, you have a choice to Use CTRL-L, CTRL-I (mirror x and y) or SHIFT-rotate the sections to make a complete cylinder.

My cylinder is not as perfect as Atom's, but it teaches you how to use important tools in hammer. Plus, with a little effort on your part, you can make it almost exactly as good as Atom's example.

Atom: i've never ever used the arch tool. does it give you vertices off grid?

use the arch tool and use a number that is a power of 4 for the number of sides. Make sure the builder cube is square from the top view.

Just make sure to hit preview to make sure its how you like it.

You've never used it? It's a lifesaver for me.

Indeed. With it, you will save many an hour.

And nobody remembers to switch it back to block when they want to make a square wall or something.

Ever.

Oh so true.

Very true. That nearly always gets me, and nothing pisses me off more than that in Hammer (except for reasonless errors).

I get this for cylinders :P.

Yeah. That's the one problem, isn't it? Your next wall/floor becomes a shape you didn't intend.

Heh heh. Always gets me too. That means it's a design flaw, and it should automatically reset to cube.

yeah how often do you need more than one arch or cylinder at a time?? and I only create new brushes only if cloning and resizing seem too daunting a task. so it's often minutes after that special brush is created that I go back to the brush tool. =] hammer 5.1 settings pls lol

Captain Terror; why make it more complex from using the simple Arch tool?

Oh i love my first day of hammer... Trying desperately to create a door but instead it kept creating a stretched couch in my doorway, then i raged and didn't touch hammer for a month.

Unbreakable: yeah i dunno i just never used it before, and i never explored it cuz i though it gave off-grid results.. If only i had known it would have sure saved me some time...
