It really doesn't matter what you use to make the textures...lol

However, I can't see paint having alot of options that are really needed to make quality textures. You can download the free software suggested or you can get a free 30 day trail of Photoshop from adobe.com. At least you can try it and when you make HL2 textures you can get the photoshop plug-in and save directly as texture. No need for any kind of manual conversion.

I don't think the signs are necessarily all that bad; I just think they are perhaps a little out of scale with everything else.

I lol'd hard. But, even I sometimes run in 640x480! (only for a sec tho, as I change it soonly after.)

I have a legit version of photoshop CS5 and I got it for free, plus if you actually want it, why don't you download it with a cd-crack or try the free version? Duh.

if i need a specific texture i would use the Gimp and cgtextures.com because it is not as easy as u think to create a texture from the scratch
Posted 13 years ago2010-12-30 13:54:03 UTC Post #288356
I usually export textures from hl.wad so that when I edit it, I alread have a legit size and a good texture to work from.

Skals, not everybody is at a college that gives free photoshop licenses like you.

Dimbark, are you running hl on a laptop? That would explain the ridiculous resolution.

No. I'm running it on a computer. I run it in fullscreen. I left it to it's default size. I think it's fine. Do ya like waffles?

I usually export textures from hl.wad so that when I edit it, I already have a legit size and a good texture to work from.
what!?

I don't even know how to respond to that...

And yes, Photoshop can be "obtained" for free. There is no link....lol. The reason for this should be rather obvious but I suppose some people can't read between the lines. I was trying to stay out of another piracy conversation since the last thread about this was rather lengthy.

If you can't figure it out then just use Paint....

And like I said, when you move up to HL2 then you will need something better because I don't think it supports .tga, which are needed for the Source textures.

But seriously, did you actually say that you exported them so you would know what size they are?

Really dude!

It starts out like this....8, then 16, then 32, I think 64, after that is 128. then double it to 256 and finally 512! You can go 1024 but that is a large texture. Most everything works in these lovely increments, well unless you are a modeler then you can get really really small.

Dude, if ma gurl can make textures then you should be able to!
Posted 13 years ago2010-12-30 14:30:32 UTC Post #288361
One large sentence \/

If im a little 11-year-old boy who made some sign textures on paint and it doesnt look so bad and I edited a model of each of the characters to give them a goatee and make them look old AND gather a team to make a modination of the game half-life AND say "This kid on Hole in the Wall is retarted!" because he was my age and said " They call me the nerd because I get good grades in school and I invented technology!! Hurp a Derp, heheh!" AND make my own Greatest Hits CD featuring me playing Marry Had a Little Lamb AND can easily beat FFX AND make a map that gives that old c1a0 feeling, you should be able to explain things easier to me.

Guys leave him alone. I don't know how to talk about this but.. at that age we were all letting our imagination talk without filtering it with the logic part of our brain.

Dimbark, translate that to us please.

modination
Awesome word, I am using it from now on.

Dimbark, nobody is trying to have a go at you, it's just that when honest advice and criticism is given to you, you deal with it, well, the way an 11 year old would and that can try some peoples' patience.
It is awesome that you are into level design at such a young age, but if you want help from a reasonably mature community like TWHL, you have to act a little better.

Now, if you'd be so kind, run HL/your mod, go into options, go into video settings, find resolution and change it to something decent before I kill you.

Trying to give a little constructive criticism is all. It's part of the process. I'm not sure how seriously to take it though when your responses are infested with memes and other random outbursts of fuck knows what.

All that I'm saying is, perfect an area before releasing media and if you do release WIP material be prepared to get a ton of comments and suggestions about what should be changed.

I think we are getting off point with all this but I think I am with Urby on this one. If you are going to post WIP then you should expect to be slammed by at least one person.

I think I said the textures weren't all that bad, just a little out of scale.

I thought the conversation was somewhat transitioning into the fact that the boy doesn't have any decent texture editing software.

So, I have come up with a simple solution....

This is a link to Photoshop 6.01 w/serial. It's an older version and I feel ok with posting the link because I don't think adobe will care. This is posted on my google account so get it while it lasts Dimbark. It's a self-extracting file so just click on it once downloaded, well, after you scan it. You will need a Google account, I believe, to access the download.

https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B3U1FMTqQ6pAZmE0MWJjZGItZTgzYS00NDVjLTgyOWUtMzYwMTI5MGJlNzU2&sort=name&layout=list&num=50

THIS LINK WILL ONLY LAST FOR 24 HOURS

It's my way of being nice...I ain't busting on ya dude but paint is for kids.

Photoshop has a slightly complex interface to use, you should search around for some beginners tutorials on getting started, I myself could never really get used to photoshop's overcomplicated system.

I am not sure what to tell you there. Use it for awhile and get used to it.

Here's the link for the plug-in. It's only good for HL2, I believe.

http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Photoshop_VTF_Plugin

Crollo:

Does Gimp have a .vtf plug-in? and yet it's still compatible with my old a** software. I have many versions of Photoshop, including the latest version(s) but I still enjoy the simplicity of Photoshop 6. I have done alot of good work with that software so don't knock it. It's entirely better than Paint.

And you two are on the same team? Shouldn't the whole team be using the same software so it can be somewhat cross compatible. If you used some of the more advanced features of GIMP, such as author tags, watermarks, and the like you would be screwed loading it into paint cause guess what?
Posted 13 years ago2010-12-30 18:26:22 UTC Post #288409
You could also try Paint Shop Pro. It's less powerfull than photoshop, but at least its a bit easier to use. Give that a try.

The work I do (when I do work, I have been unable to get anything done for some time thanks to a broken graphics card fan, which I'm about to replace) is purely technical: programming, model/sprite/sound hacking and similar stuff. I haven't touched a texture so far.

This weekend and part of next week, I will be working on the deathmatch areas of Theoretical Disaster. I've started working on a few maps, and now I'm looking for artists. Click below for one of the deathmatch models, I'm looking for an artist who can give them a good pic when in the menu.

Just going to say this now... even if this mod surfaces, no one will play deathmatch. Goldsource MP is really down to CS 1.6, and then a little bit spread across HL DM, TFC, and DOD. It'd really just be a waste of time to try and implement DM.

while I have to admit that saw is very, very correct, I can't deny that young Dimbark has great ambitions and seek to create a mod of epic and professional calibre. However Dimbark, a friendly warning for you. Once you get to high school you may find that you won't have as much free time. If you don't work on it 24/7, your mod will end up as vapourware.
