Well clearly it's an easy question. I would like to record footage of strange mods that I come across, because you know, a video is a thousand pictures.

Please suggest some free recording software that I can use that doesn't lag (like hypercam). I use a windows 7 laptop 64 bit.

And if you didn't know, fraps costs money.

You are right. At a frame rate of, let's say, 30 fps, that would be a 33,4 seconds video.

If you don't want to take fraps, there is an alternative I think. It's called camstudio. But it records like crap. Your best solution would still be fraps.

Yeah, if you have a supercomputer to run that.

Try gamecam, the free trial [AFIAK] let's you record video with audio for a unlimited time, with only a watermark in the lower right corner.

I heard that hl actually has a built in recorder.

I believe if you type in "record videonamehere" in the console it'll record a video (or a million gazillion pictures)

I think that's for recording a demo, which is not quite the same. It is saved as a file that stores every keypress you did while recording, like a macro in Excel. In game, you load that file and it basically plays again repeating what you did the first time.

I think Stu is right on that one, HL's built in feature records all the game code running as you play and then when you replay it simply runs through all the code again in real time.

fraps fraps fraps! if you have an old ass computer then try checking the "record at half size" button and lowering the frame rate, it makes it much easier on your CPU.

The conversion to video only works in source games.
Fraps.

fraps costs money. Is there really no alternative? (will try gamecam later)

I know about 30 second trial but really I prefer one that doesn't have that limitation

CamStudio is good and free.

Fraps.
You mean the picture printer? It works in goldsource. Then just use videomach to compile it. You need to record a demo first to use it though. "record demoname"

Then to print them use "startmovie movietitle 25" where 25 is the FPS.

Bottom line. If you want a program that records good-quality fullscreen videos you're going to have to grab your wallet. Fraps is the best program I've come across for recording gameplay. The only issue then is whether your sound card is compatible.

(My RealTek soundcard is onboard so Fraps won't record sound. I have to mess with the settings in Control Panel whenever I want to record, but seeing as I only record for reviews which I narrate over the footage it rarely matters to me.)

I forgot; VLC can do it too.

Or you can offline render 100% free of charge, only requires a lot of time.

Oh, and it records higher quality then fraps of course, as it renders raw bmp files with no set keyrate.

EDIT: Random bump! FOR SCIENCE!
