As stated in my latest journal, I've reinstalled Hammer 3.5, installed The Compilator, HlFix and SHLT 3.9.
I reopened an old map I quit developing in 2007 due to some problems, a remake of assault. It would have been called cs_market_assault, but now I'm abandoning the idea of this being a counterstrike map. It's way to modified and has way too many routes encouraging camping to have a fast, funny and efficient gameplay.
Instead, I want to apply some modifications and optimizations for transforming it into a HLDM map.

2 days ago, after putting the map in a huge box(the map was left uncompleted, with a lot of holes) just to see if it works and to re-explore it ingame(compile time: only 15 minutes!), I saved it and closed hammer. It was late and I was tired.
Today, when I wanted to reopen the rmf, hammer just crashes. It won't open the .map file also. I tried compiling the .rmf with hlfix to a .map, and it still can't open it.

What seems to be the problem? Suddenly Hammer decided to prevent me ever seeing this .rmf again?

This happened to me too once, but ive got an error, something like:

can not open RMF version v1.0.1

Its not correct but i know hammer didnt want to open the RMF.

Try editing the MAP file, remove what you added the latest in it (lines of text which determine solids) < very hard

Also it might just be that the hammer F-ed up the map while saving.

Rename the mapname.rmx to mapname.rmf (copy it as well).

This. It's going to be in the same dir. as the original RMF.

i had this happen with one of rooms maps(hldm), and the only way i was able to open it fsr was by choosing the counter-strike profile. (my hammer asks me if the rmf i'm about to open is for hl or cs)

Perhaps try opening it under a different profile? Also, i heard of a bug where if you have too many stuff in your vhe/maps directory, hammer will take a crap, but i can't confirm this is true.

If you can't manage to recover it, send it my way. When I get some time I'll run it through my RMF reader and see if there's a way to repair it.

Oddly, there's no .rmx file. I would've tried that but idk know why there isn't one :.

A long time ago, back in the days of my dracula castle (which probably everyone has seen already) I tried to make another CS map. Since I didn't know any better, I started to map and map and map, until the result was a whole city taking up most of the mappable grid. It had EVERYTHING: Residential areas, hotels, train stations, warehouses, a church, and I had even started a small airport. Until one day Hammer just started to crash whenever I tried to open the rmf.

So maybe your map had too many brushes.

It's not as huge as what you're describing :).

Maybe it just has way too many brushes and Hammer can't handle it. Could be possible, considering the level of detail you say it has.
